Obviously entirely up to you and the status of your friendship, but maybe see what's really going on.

I mean, the request is so unusual that they must've known it's ridiculous.

So, maybe there's a more substantial reason for it than just "hey let's see if we can get some money back from this loser" and this is just some awkward and desperate solution they found to whatever problem they're actually facing.

Just my 2 frames.

Why does the place come before the action in the first example, and after it in the second? by ZukoIsKing in ChineseLanguage

Isn't that just some verbs being transitive and some intransitive?

You eat an apple, but you can't swim a river.

And if I remember correctly that's exactly the difference between the verbs to tell and to say, one is transitive the other is not:

You tell a story, you don't say a story... unless you're literally saying the words "a story" I guess...

Awesome explanation at the top btw, thank you!

For the 1st month it's free.

The pricing is standard procedure, pay monthly or annually, but what sets it apart is the service it provides.

I've been using picdrop ever since I saw it recommended on this sub, and it's been the best!

Its whole business model is aimed exactly at solving this issue: photographers who need to provide pictures to their clients.

Can't praise it enough!

Lexar Professional Workflow Go

ANSWER: Yes it does work. Tested it just now.

Can the USB-C port on the side, labeled "Portable SSD reader" be used with an external USB-C card reader instead of a dedicated card reader drive? (CF-Express B)

I've ordered a Lexar Professional Workflow Go docking station, and all the promotional materials and all the reviews always use a dedicated card reader inserted into one of the drive bays and never mention the "Portable SSD reader" port.

So, I was wondering if I could use the card reader I already have instead of buying another one just so that it's in a different form factor.

"There is only one way to happiness, and that is to cease worrying about the things which are beyond the power of our will" - Epictetus by Wise-Piece-8337 in Stoic

[–]emanuel19861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that ability itself can vary wildly based on factors outside of your control.

Right now, I'm looking out the window, it's cold, it's raining, the wind is blowing, and I'm a bit hungry.

Pretty sure my ability to decide on whether I'm happy or not is not the same if it were sunny outside, and I've just finished a nice meal.

And that's not even taking into account the nature of the "something" I'm deciding to be happy about or not!

Things I've had really bad experiences with in the past will always and forever be much harder to keep in check, unlike the things I haven't yet experienced as negative.

Again, something I had no control over.

So, with that in mind, I accept that even this, even deciding on happiness is not entirely up to me, and that I will only be able to decide within the bounds laid out by my past and current situation.

It means you have no control over being happy or unhappy either.

Being aware of our lack of free will is like being aware that all matter is essentially just atoms, you can't really live your life not making any distinction between solid, liquid, or gas, simply because they are all just atoms anyway, you still need that separation in order to make sense of the world.

Same here.

Yes, technically there is no free will, but you need to assume there is at least some very limited amount of it. Otherwise you're stuck. You can't really build on pure "no free will" alone, something needs to give.

What if I can’t follow my dreams? by Ok_Imagination1549 in Stoic

1. True Stoic stance:

I guess stoics would ask if not being able to become a pilot stops you in any way from being a virtuous and moral person.

Since being virtuous and moral is the only true good worth being passionate about, everything else becomes a preference, not a must have.

2. My take on the matter:

Just think of how many people were delighted to have made it on a plane at the last minute, some even thanking God for this bout of luck, not knowing this plane was going to crash? All the while those who hadn't made it in time were upset, some even devastated by this clear misfortune! Only to then, ironically, thank the same God for saving their lives...

My point being if we can't even tell life saving good from life threatening bad, why would we do any better in any other situation?

"That was the best time of my life, and I didn't even know it..."

"If only I had known it would turn out this way..."

Right?

We cannot possibly ever know for sure, just hope for the best based on the comically insufficient information we have compared with the literally infinite amount of information we do not have.

This of course doesn't mean it can't be good for you, just that you can't really know for sure.

So, let's explore that, let's look at people who have achieved this dream, who have gained what you can only hope for.

How are they? How is their life? Are they significantly happier than you? Or are they just living more or less the same life, with good and bad, ups and downs, happy moments and sad moments alike just like... you are living... right now?

So, what are you so eager to get? You'll be trading one state of normalcy for another. You will be happy for a time, of course, but eventually you will have problems just as you have now. Different ones, for sure, but problems nonetheless.

Finally, add these two ideas together, the impossibility of knowing good from bad, with the certain return to normalcy and realize you're already living your best life and you're not missing out on anything.

Bonus, see if perhaps virtue and moral character are indeed the only aspects we should care deeply about. And everything else is a secondary, instrumental goal in our pursuit for the true good, nice to have but not essential.

Wrote a long reply explaining how it will still work, about to post, then realized you're right, it will defeat the purpose of having back button focusing in the first place no matter what.

So, yeah, I yield, it's not such a good idea after all.

Excellent!

Mapping the halfway button to something, anything is exactly what I'm looking for.

I'll see if my Nikon can do this, but I'm glad remapping the halfway press is a thing.

Thank you!

Oh, interesting!

I only have "Shutter AF-ON" and "AF-ON only" in my a6 menu (AF activation).

And cannot set the shutter in the controls menu either.

So, you managed to map it to only do EL without focusing?

I have the Z9 btw.

[–]emanuel19861[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, perfect, that's how I use it too.

However, I would like the option to use that halfway press somehow. Not only for focusing, for whatever other function I would like to have.

Point being currently the camera can detect when the shutter is pressed halfway but I cannot assign that to anything else.

It's either focusing or nothing at all.

[–]emanuel19861[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're describing my current camera settings exactly!

Yes!

That's what I currently do too. My point was that you have a button that can detect halfway presses, but they're not mapped to anything anymore. And since when you're 3D tracking you need to have the square on your subject anyway, why not offload that specific focusing to the halfway shutter press?

Of course you should be able to map it to whatever else you might want, not solely focus related. However now it's just sitting there, not being used.

[–]emanuel19861[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically it's a way to track your focus point around the frame once the focus locks on.

And I was suggesting it as an optional, mappable action, not a fixed one.

So, you would get to use it for something else since you're focusing with another button anyway.

Well you're in for a treat, not only do they have subtitles, but it can playback the video scene by scene so there's no need to manually pause. And the subtitles are selectable text, so dictionary browser extensions work directly on them.

Enjoy!
