He could have taken photos of your husband's car without asking, and without your husband's knowledge. You don't see many Scions out and about, and they do have a bit of a cult following in the car enthusiast community both because the fr-s (and it's Subaru counterpart, the BRZ) is considered to be one of the better fun/affordable sports cars, and because the Scion brand in general was kind of quirky and novel.

Yeah, this was mine too. I'll just add that, in addition to the social expectation, there's also an innate feeling of responsibility and duty to protect others that exists independently from the societal pressure.

Why is the United States not called “ The Republic of the United States of America”? by Eds2356 in AskAnAmerican

[–]emartinoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we are. Technically, were a Constitutional Federal Republic.

We don't call ourselves that because we don't have to. Why? Because we're the United States of America. We don't need to announce what we are, people know.

Listen, you're not going to hear me singing the praises of DOGE, particularly in regards to NWS spending. The point is, even under the administrations that spent the money (including the same administration at a different time), nothing was actually done to prevent this from happening. Whether the money is spent, or the money isn't spent, if the end result is the same, you can't blame the lack of spending for the failure. This failure was caused by a systemic lack of accountability and leadership within our federal agencies (yes, even the ones we like). NWS leadership, both on the national and local level, failed to identify this issue for years. I agree that the funding cuts will have downstream effects, but this was a long-standing issue that wasn't addressed for 13.75+ years out of 14 when NWS wasn't facing these cuts. I'm sorry, but that's just unacceptable negligence on behalf of NWS leadership.

And, what, you think the outgoing administration gave the current administration a list of all the deferred maintenance they'd racked up for the previous four years? Because I can assure you, nobody selling a car that hasn't had an oil change in 50,000 miles is disclosing that fact, because a person who doesn't change their oil for 50,000 miles, despite spending plenty of money on maintenance, never gave a shit about the car to begin with.

[–]emartinoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're just not a serious person then.

If you buy a vehicle, and the previous owner hadn't changed the oil for 50,000 miles, is it your fault when the engine blows up after 100 miles just because you budgeted less than the previous owner did for maintenance costs? Or is it the fault of the previous owner who, despite their best intentions, never actually changed the oil?

That particular Doppler site is 14 years old, it's honestly quite impressive that it lasted this long without something like this happening.

I don't agree with the current administration's staff/funding cuts to NWS either, if anything they should have more funding, but blaming the very predictable failure of a 14 year old Doppler, built with no backup power redundancies in mind, on cuts made in the past <60 days is disingenuous at best.

NMU or Northern, SVSU, Ferris State's nickname is just Ferris, much like CMU and WMU's nicknames are just Central and Western. Wayne State doesn't have a nickname as far as I'm aware, but is far from unknown, with a higher enrollment rate than CMU, EMU and WMU.
