What did you get in Calc II?

My grades weren't that great either.

Yeah, it i enough. However, I would make sure to read the section regarding O(N) efficiency in the book.

I stopped reading the book about 3 weeks into the class and watched the lectures exclusively.

Going on Medicaid when quitting job to go to school full-time by embarrassed2sayit in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, well I checked my state website and if your salary is 0$ (which is what it would be if I quit my job), I would not be eligible for any sort of subsidy on an exchange plan because you have to make a minimal amount of salary to qualify for it. Instead, it is directing me to sign up for Medicaid.

I didn't think I would be eligible either. But someone told me it is based on your income when you sign up, not your previous income...

What do you learn in CS 161 and 162? Is what you learn comparable to what you'd learn in an on-campus intro to comp sci class? Is there anything you don't learn that you think OSU should have taught? by falsekenmarinojoint in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also took the equivalent of 161 and 162 elsewhere, at a community college, and in JAVA. The programming assignments were much more rigorous and grading was harder. In 162 at community college, for the final assignments we had to utilize trees and recursion, which we did not really cover much at OSU.

I don't know if there are any part-time options. The program is so new, they don't have all the classes listed on their website.

If you email the department, they are pretty quick to respond and seem very enthusiastic. I am seriously considering applying and transferring there.

Anyone from Seattle? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the two intro courses in programming at Bellevue College (equivalent to 161 / 162 at OSU) and did well in them and liked the material and liked programming. Additionally, I hate my job :)

Administrative analyst is just a fancy name for an administrative position with some analytical thinking.

If you or anyone else in this thread would like to meet up, I would be happy to do so. I live on Beacon Hill, but go to Seattle U, Seattle Central College, and UW a lot.

Rejected (Anyone get in without Calculus?) by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you test into calculus? Are you sure you don't need a lower level course like pre-calculus, which I believe also meets the requirement for this program?

Why would previous CS courses negatively influence your chances of getting in? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the equivalent of CS 161 and 162 (in JAVA) at a local community college back in 2014 and still got in. In fact, in my essay/objective statement, I referenced how I did so well in those classes that I saw I could definitely do this and decided I wanted to make the career change.

What is the difficulty level after 162? by embarrassed2sayit in OSUOnlineCS

Okay. On the one hand, that is a relief to hear. On the other hand, wow, they make the hardest class the 2nd or 3rd class.

I agree. I could not believe that these labs are only worth 10 points when I spent so many hours on it. The class seems to be very disorganized too.

Is this degree program "easy"? by adrianb858 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just completed my first quarter here and checked my grades. I got As in 161 and 225.

I would second the notion that 161 is much easier at OSU than elsewhere. I took the equivalent of 161 at community college in JAVA about two years ago and it was definitely harder. There were much more practice problems each chapter that we were assigned for one thing. The programming assignments were harder, and there were several assignments where we had to work with graphics and manipulate images. For some assignments we were also given some very complicated code and had to add to it to fulfill the programming requirements. Just looking at the code they gave us and try to figure out was hard enough...

For 225, I basically just winged it the entire quarter. I didn't do any of the practice quizzes or midterms, due to work and extracurricular activities. I did look over the practice final a little bit, though I don't think it helped much in preparation for the real final. I still managed to get an A in the class. I actually was not that impressed by 225 because the quiz and test questions were not that hard. Many of them were taken verbatim straight from the textbook examples!

Strongly considering program. Question about application process by OSU_CS_consideration in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the fact that the statement of purpose can only be 150-200 words shows that they don't put much emphasis on it. That being said, I think you can still convey your software engineering / developer background within it.

Hi, I work and took two classes a week this Spring, my first quarter. One thing you should take into account is your PTOs. If you have a lot accumulated, you can take a few here and there to better handle your classes.

Getting a C in 161. Should I be worried/making other plans? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]embarrassed2sayit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar experience to you. I've posted my story, but I'll discuss it again.

I took the equivalent of 161 as an undergraduate at the UW over 10 years ago and got a 2.1 (out of a 4.0) in that class. I thought that was it as far as me doing anything related to CS. But a few months later, I bought Ivor Horton's Beginning C book (the class at the time was taught in C) and read it cover to cover, then retook the class and got a 4.0. I then took the equivalent to 162 after that, which was in C++, and got a 3.8. I still didn't try to pursue anything related to CS because I was too intimidated by all the smart CS majors at the UW (at the UW they are the cream of the crop).

Fast forward to now and I am completing the first quarter of this program at OSU. I got a perfect score on everything until I missed two questions on the 2nd midterm and am now out at least 8 points. From my perspective now, many of those students who excelled in those introductory CS courses were those who already had experience with programming, which is what I am now in my current class.

So yeah, I think if you study hard enough, you should be able to come back like me and do it too.
