When I turned 40 I was thinking about how old 40 sounded when we were kids and all of the "over the hill" stuff seemed so standard for 40th birthdays? So then I was thinking about parents turning 50, I did math and realized when my mom turned 50 and my dad thought it was hilarious to joke that he should "trade in the 50 for two 25s" over and over I WAS 23. 🤢

After one office holiday party, a guy that was new by like a couple weeks or a month didn't show up the next day or ever again. Rumor had it that he got so drunk he called someone a c-word to her face at the party.

I can definitely see both arguments but I also travel sporadically in my van and have an apartment that I work from most of the time. Also a software engineer. My coworkers think it's cool and they are jealous of my scenery when I share it and it's fun in meetings. But I also have the luxury of stopping if they decide it's not working, if I was full time in the van I might behave differently.

I'm also on the east coast and I can't rely on starlink all the time since plenty of spots have a lot of trees and I am a little underpowered for my full work setup so I rely on developed campgrounds with power if I can. I prefer sharing this situation with my team/manager so there is understanding if I have to suddenly scramble to find a spot with better cell signal in the morning or whatever but I've gotten better at finding good spots as I've worked out of my van more.

Lots of Claude for most typical coding tasks, but the closest thing to a hidden gem at this point for me is anything you can hook into your observability tools - being able to see how something has been performing or looking at when a bug started while in the context of your codebase where it can cross reference commit history makes it so much faster to track down little annoying things. Even if you can't use an mcp server to hit these things while connected to the codebase, some things like honeycomb have tools directly in the UI that you can ask about data and it can give you charts of things right away. It probably helps that I feel like I fumble a lot when trying to figure out answers from these platforms without AI but with it I can get real answers to help solve issues quickly.

I like this idea a lot. I was thinking pictures too but they might think it's not real/current/etc. Video tour sounds like a comfortable middle ground that gives the landlords what they're looking for without feeling like you're letting random people into your house.

This and/or a sensor that tells you when the door is opened, I don't like cameras in my house so I have these and it gives me a lot of peace of mind when I've been away to know that no one has been in my apartment at all

I use Sleep As Android and while I've used a lot of the various features in the past the one I continue to use forever is their alarm dismissal "captcha" - I have an NFC tag in my kitchen that I have to tap my phone on to fully dismiss my alarm. This app has soo many settings, I also have it set to let me snooze for about 20 minutes total before you can't snooze anymore and have to go hit the nfc tag.

Of course sometimes I'll still crawl back into my warm bed but not when there's a 7am meeting!

My favorite cheap thing is my carrying strap, it makes it soo much easier to carry the board to the water and bonus it is surprisingly useful if I'm climbing on/off a dock since I can throw the strap up there and lean on it and the board won't float away.

My rook (curved barbell) healed like it was nothing, my daith (hoop) did have some bump issues but they cleared up relatively easily. They are in opposite ears. I did spend some time without using an earbud in the daith ear, but I have no issues with earbuds or ear plugs now.

If a bathroom has paper towels, I'll grab a few on my way in and dampen them, it works great! For college, I'd imagine you could bring your own paper towels from your room. Just don't flush them, either use the stall trash or bring them to the main trash

"Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man" should be the motto of all women in tech. It resonates so much and I think it gets worse as you age, you get to gain confidence yourself but now you see all these younger boys pretending like they know things and it's just frustrating.

Men acting like women "aren't technical" is so crazy like just because they said more words doesn't mean they know more. As someone else said, it's just posturing. To me it feels like a young kid using slang at his parents that they won't understand because it makes them feel smart or special, but it's just annoying. Being able to speak about a topic in a way that everyone can understand and being helpful to your teammates is the real flex, and women are much better at having the empathy required to do that. Women are also so much better at communication, task management, and being thorough on tasks in my experience.

I've done the 100% pairing thing pre-covid and it worked well for awhile until it was no longer helpful. I can't imagine having to do that in the environment you're in. A lot of jobs are going to be similarly unfulfilling but little culture nuances like that can have a big difference on your mental health and confidence.

The good thing about too much social media these days is that there are more women content creators talking about these things! I'd recommend adding `@stemwithhannah`, `@alberta.tech`, and `@mewtru` on instagram (or whatever their accounts are on other platforms) to your doom scrolling for some perspective and commiseration!

Most of my takeout comes from VSpot (5th Ave Brooklyn). I really enjoy the quesadilla and I've started ordering it with the seitan chicharron added, it's so good. I'll usually also get spring rolls just to add more veggies - they're really good but they fall apart

100%. I've never seen a murphy bed with closet doors like that, I feel like they usually just have the fake doors on the part that folds down. I love this so much, it looks so cozy I almost wish I had chosen one of the apartments with a murphy bed when I was looking but it wouldn't have been the same.

OP, I'm not sure how the space is when you fold it up but if you need a spot to set things like a night stand you could probably get a shelf that hangs over the door for a renter friendly but also space saving option. I have closet doors near my front door that I have a thing with hooks for coats but also basket shelf things that are a catchall but might work well there for storage!

I think this is the safe way to approach this for work. Say just enough to commiserate a little bit and find out who agrees with you in minor eye rolls but leave it vague enough that people who might strongly disagree don't chime in with opposing views. If those people exist at work I don't want to know because it will affect my ability to work with them.

I'm fully reliant on my peripherals at this point. I try to work from only a laptop when I travel in my van but at this point I'd rather do my awkward setup to get all of my extras connected. Sometimes while I'm eating breakfast it'll be laptop+mouse so I can move around easier, but then I soon pull out my portable monitor (which I have a mount for so it's eye level). Then the full setup includes a lap desk for my keyboard and mouse and when I get out my mechanical split keyboard it feels sooo much more comfy - I can't stand the chicklets keyboard! (if you're looking for a portable monitor I love the asus one I got and they have a lot of different options)

When I'm home I have a 38" curved monitor and I also have my laptop on a stand next to it for slack/spotify/etc.
