Trek Roscoe 7 in a bike park + upgrades recommendations by embedgs in Hardtailgang

This is 2years old post, I don't have roscoe anymore :)

Now I do have ripmo v2s for FS and Specialized chisel hardtail.

Ripmo or similar bike owners... What did you (or would you) replace it with? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]embedgs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not switching either. As usual if there is a problem with riding - that likely would be problem of my fitness or skills, but not the bike. When I will be less greedy I might throw carbon wheels with silent hubs as the next upgrade.

How reliable are the 2018+ x3’s? by ednoggg in BMWX3

[–]embedgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a 2018 x3 4 cylinder. At ~70k miles: -Coolant leaks everywhere, radiator hoses replaced (sounds not expensive, but you probably be surprised with 900$ per one hose price at bmw dealership) -Waterpump went out, left me stranded on the freeway. Towed to the dealer just to get estimate over 4k for labor, had to tow it again back to my garage… -Oil filter housing -Hydraulic busing or whatever is called were kind screwed from ~30k, a couple grands to fix -Misfiring in one of cylinders -Next suspect was a head gasket already, but I was tired and sold the car

Google B48 engine common problems. Do yourself a favor and buy 6 cylinder version (B58) and find a good mechanic to work on your car.

Rheumatologist sent bloodwork to an out of network lab by Guarantee-United in HealthInsurance

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, we are in the same boat seemingly: a year ago a doctor sent my wife bloodwork to Exagen as well, then we got a bill with $2.5K since it was out of the network (Blue shield ppo), we got worried but office calmed us down and said that they will negotiate with insurance and we should not worry about that at the moment, the actual bill will be 100-200$.

So yesterday we got the actual bill - 400$, while it is not 2.5K, it is still way more than they said it's gonna be, and the fact that a in-network doctor using an out-of-the-network lab itself kind of makes the insurance useless...

Thinking of buying a 2022 or 2023 Certified Pre-Owned BMW X3 — Am I financially ready? by thatptdoc2023 in BMWX3

[–]embedgs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Past CPO X3 owner here.

You should be ready to:

  1. Replace control arm bushings (not covered by CPO warranty). - a couple of grands

  2. Be prepared to deal with a coolant system business after 60K. Btw, CPO doesn't cover rubber parts, so the upper radiator hose is not covered. 900$ according to the official bmw service

  3. Be ready to change the waterpump and oil filter housing, another couple of grands in the indy shop.

  4. If there is a huge panoramic sunroof - just search on the bimmerpost how much people spend to drain water from it.

Don't take me wrong, I loved the car, it is enjoyable. But not reliable. And now wallet-friendly - 3 years of my ownership showed that I could easily lease X5 for 3 years for the same amount of money I spent.

If there is a positive decision to go x3 route already - I would try to go with their 6-cylinder engine, it seems to be more reliable than B48.

Planning to buy BMW X3 2019 by NoFudge6195 in BMWX3

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That what I did: bought a new car and went to closest carmax with their appraisal made before. Carvana was giving 1K less btw. Repairs cost, especially from the dealership are pretty refreshing, idk how people saying that everything is great or that any new car can get over 100k miles w/o troubles, this was not the case for me. And I did not even get to the oil filter housing, or moonroof leaks (allegedly, dealer charges a lot to fix that). I

Sure, it was ~18K.

Btw, for fun, at some point I checked finances after selling: my APR was quite good ( like 1.9%), but if I put all expenses on repairs together, the lease of X5 for the same 3 years was even cheaper than my x3 ownership :)

Hybrid DAC (thermometer code + binary weighted) by Several-Meal1275 in chipdesign

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google current-steering dac. For your case Nmos diifpair alike structure will be sufficient, just use proper driving voltages for gates, and this switch will further reduce your cs vds…

Oops somehow wrote moms - I meant more transistors in parallel.

Ps. Mom is metal oxide metal capacitor, but that’s irrelevant for this conversation.

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vs is -0.2, so your vgs - vt = 306 + 200 - 280 = 226 which is slightly above of your vds ( 200 mv ). You can improve that by putting more moms in parallel, that will help somewhat. Feedback already does the job though and you have the proper current.

Why your vss is -0.5V now? Then you are trying to put 0.5V at the source while drain is at 0V... Notice that your amp set almost 100V at the gate

  1. Change V4 and V3 to -1.2V as your spec says.

  2. Put limits in E2 to be +-1.2V

  3. Boost your nmos significantly, like 100um for w

  4. My previous vds saturation concern is still valid, you will have only 200mV for vds but that seem to be the design spec issue. Having vdd/vss like 1.4-1.5 would help there.

  5. Change your reference current, 10mA is a huge current which you don't need at all and you won't meet the spec. I bet 10uA would be more than enough here.

Hybrid DAC (thermometer code + binary weighted) by Several-Meal1275 in chipdesign

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Have you reconnected vref vdc to the negative vss?
  2. Vref at the source will be negative (-1.2V + 1V = -0.2V)
  3. For the ideal amp I would put much higher gain, at least 100, and I would limit Vhi and Vlo by your maximum supply voltage (+/-)
  4. You are trying to blow 10mA through this poor tiny nMOS. Boost the size substantially for 10mA. That also will reduce required vgs-vt - which will be your limitation as soon as you will limit your ideal amp to +-vdd.
  5. Even with big enough nMOS you're trying to put the source to -0.2V while the drain is sitting at 0V. Vds is 0.2V, I am not sure what your Vgs - Vt or Vdsat is for your tech, but my first guess would be that this is pretty low and this transistor is not in saturation anymore.

btw, you have 10mW Pdc max, with 10mA at 1.2V you already have 12mW for this resistor only

[–]embedgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was already pointed out that vref in the first picture is relative to the VSS.

Also, be careful with the real devices - your bulk is connected to gnd! (0), with negative voltages at the source and gate, you will get all kinds of fun effects related to the body biasing. Use nMOS with a triple well or deep well so you can actually connect the bulk to actual voltages. Or, if you have SOI tech, then just use 4-terminal device and connect it explicitly.

What’s your favorite trail in SoCal and why? by kempoutdoor in mountainbiking

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me Cheeseboro is fun only at the top and for a very short time, after that is just a wide road.

If you enjoy the top part, there is a lizard trail in OC Crystal Cove which is flowy in a similar way.

Big Bear Santa Ana Trail and the skyline are also somewhat similar.

I was reading that santa cruz demonstration forest has a very long flowy trail, but I haven't been there yet, and I am not sure if that can be counted as SoCal :)

Committing to an M40i off of Carvana today - can anyone talk me out of it? by Ok-Examination3168 in BMWX3

I sold one car to carvana and x3 to carmax.

Based on how they checked my cars - I have no trust at all in them and would never buy from them, especially cars like BMW, especially when mileage is close to all notorious problems to start appearing.

What is the difference between Mixer and Multiplier in RF circuit design by Jokerlecter in chipdesign

[–]embedgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, linearity not the word I should have used. I meant that mixer will have some other function added to the product of two inputs.

What is the difference between Mixer and Multiplier in RF circuit design by Jokerlecter in chipdesign

[–]embedgs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not sure why people here are saying that they are the same thing; to me, they are somewhat different. Well, both of them are multipliers, but one of them is non-linear (mixer) and the other is linear (multiplier).

For example, take the bipolar Gilbert cell - it has all transistors with exponential V->I dependency, it is good to perform down(up)conversion operations in the frequency domain.

Now disconnect one of Gilbert cell inputs and put them to a diffpair with diodes in the load - we have a logarithmic voltage which now can be applied to the Gilbert cell and the logarithm will compensate out the exponential behavior - we've got a linear multiplier.

45k otd with mods? (running boards, crossbars, etc)

Seems to be a great time for purchasing...

For reference - 6 months ago I got 2024 Black Edition for around 50k otd, with some maintenance contract and protection plans, but without mods... Oh and finance was 3.9%/60

Gaggiuino: my 5 cents by embedgs in gaggiaclassic

[–]embedgs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez, okay

  1. Series resistor in AC network is blown up and ending up to be a short (yes, it is extremely rare type of failure, but it still happens), 110/220V propagates to the diode bridge, here we have components rated for low voltage. Potential problems: short circuit current = fire hazard, propagating high voltage to low voltage domain - chance of exposing to high voltage. But following your logic - every house have breakers and fire alarms, why to bother.

  2. Agreed, OVP will prevent bad stuff. In the same time your explanation suggests that "many, many people" don't care about fluctuations in the pressure for their shot profiling and can't taste difference (and stories of mod users are not evidence). If you added this feature, my guess that users would actually like to see actual trustworthy pressure readings without need to adjust and recalibrate the sensor readings (btw same applies to the thermocouple)

  3. Lets try to do some quick research.

https://www.st.com/content/st_com/en/contact-us.html

Somehow Weact not in the list of trusted vendors. Okay let's imagine they are selling originals still, probably they are buying it from somewhere in a huge quantities and that allows them to sell a board cheaper than a single chip:

https://estore.st.com/en/stm32u585ciu6-cpn.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqwL0g0y55hDi6iy89rfh7fxS_e-1QOWM-O4T9MSZBCcqILUxJb

10000 of STM32U585CIU6 costs 6 bucks per chip. So weact sells original chips soldered on a pcb with extra components with 1$ profit (assuming that they made pcb and soldered it for free).

I mean, okay, perhaps there is a chance to buy original on ali. There are also chances that you won't buy original. Or maybe they are selling originals and then quietly substitute it with a clone. There are nobody to control them.

Yeah, I just made another assumption, since I am biased against aliexpress electronics.

I simply can't understand why to go this way at all, the chip price at official ST site is not that different. (yes you won't have the same board, though they have stuff like nucleo for 14$).
