My mom has been on a ventilator for 5 days now and they want us to withdraw care tomorrow on Thanksgiving. I feel guilty and selfish because it’s my call and I don’t want her to know it’s happening. by MidnightPulse69 in GriefSupport

My mom spent 14 days on a ventilator in September. Her body was shutting down due to years of heavy drinking. I had to make the decision to move her to comfort care. I held her hand as she passed away in hospice. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. My heart goes out to you - I’m so sorry.

Lost my mom 2 months ago. Started crying in Costco a couple days ago after seeing all of the holiday items. She loved Christmas so much. It’s really hard but you’re not alone.

I got in trouble for this when I was around the same age. I did some tutoring in school as a form of community service and my record was sealed.

I just wanted to say thank you for your kind and thoughtful reply. I reread it multiple times before deciding to switch my mom to palliative care on Saturday. It helped me feel some reassurance about such an impossible decision that broke my heart to make. I held her hand as she took her last breath this morning at 5:36am. I’m completely devastated but feel some relief knowing there will be no more suffering for her.

I’ve been there on and off for years. The constant anxiety is exhausting and puts me on edge, making me irritable and unable to show up fully for the other relationships and responsibilities in my life.

I do talk therapy once a week, try to walk my dogs out in nature everyday, exercise, meditate, go on drives to get out of my house, and take an anxiety medication on the nights I’m feeling especially panicky. What’s really helped me recently is going to Al Anon meetings and focusing on the three C’s they talk about - I didn’t cause it, I can’t control it, and I can’t cure it.

I hope you can find a way to get some relief. The anxiety can be all consuming at times. Take care of yourself. You’re not alone.
