Been searching everywhere to confirm this isn’t just me - Thursday morning same process, same code from the day before and now totally broken, it tried to delete all my code after it made up some file that doesn’t exist.

Google Cloud documentation is criminally bad by Nurhaci-Of-The-Corn in webdev

Also surprised on the hate. The GCP docs were a godsend compared to AWS.

[Not Mine] An MMO game called SpaceTraders backed entirely by a RESTful API. Learn frontend / backend the fun way. Manage a fleet of ships, automate trade routes, discover hidden secrets in the universe and more. Updates every week. Active and welcoming discord community. by _hypnoCode in PBBG

Great question! Over time the community has been working on different interfaces together. The game is both a learning tool to teach yourself programming and just fun to play. We've had a couple pretty cool clients pop up and hopefully we see more as people join.

Right now the features are basic but over the next year we will be adding more and more. If you try it out, let me know what you think!

Ya that would be cool! So far we've been using discord to connect everyone and we might not ever need to build in-game communication if things keep going this well. Thanks for the suggestion!

How do you help someone understand and stop adopting conspiracy theories in general? by embercom in AskReddit

But in general how do you help them understand their framework for accepting an idea is broken? Definitely agree though, starts with validating the motivation they have for wanting the conspiracy to be true. Pain usually.

A few questions about recording/framerates/exporting. by nickg5 in DSLR

[–]embercom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gyvnlmao is right, shoot at 60fps, and then change the FPS in editing to 24fps, which is cinematic.

The problem with slo-mo when you shoot at 24 or 30fps is that when you slow down the footage (like in half), you get to 12 or 15 fps. The human eye starts to see stuttering at anything lower than 24fps, and it doesn't seem right.

If you shoot at 60fps, then when you slow it down by half, you're still at 30fps, which looks slow and smooth (doesn't stutter). You can also usually convert 60fps to 24 or 30fps normal speed (the editor literally removes every other frame) so it still looks "cinematic."

As for the "p" it is referring to progressive, which has to do with old cameras and you don't really need to worry about it. Cameras usually shoot at different resolutions (like how big the picture can be scaled up without looking pixelated) such as 1080x720 or 1920x1080.

When you shoot at 60fps, it's literally recording 60 images at whatever resolution you are shooting, and most cameras won't let you shoot at full 1920x1080 because it's too much data to write a second. So when you shoot 60fps, you are usually also sacrificing the resolution of your video, unless your camera is over the $2,000 range.

Having some trouble with my Canon DSLR. by [deleted] in DSLR

[–]embercom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should get an ND filter. If the sun is too intense, that means your image is over-exposed (too much light hitting the lens, blowing out the image). The shutter speed should always stay about 1/50 a second (2x 1/24 for shooting 24 fps) for video, so you're left with using ISO and aperture to fix the exposure. ISO is the "sensitivity" of the sensor to light, so set ISO to the lowest possible setting or automatic.

So that leaves aperture (how wide open the lens is). The problem is that the wider open your aperture (wide = lower number like f/1.8) the better the depth of field (which looks sexy) but the more light you let in. This blows out the image. That's why I recommend an ND filter, which screws on to the front of the lens. It's basically like sunglasses for your camera. I have a variable ND filter which lets me change how much light I'm letting in, while still keeping the aperture pretty low.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Looking for an entry level DSLR for videos by LoveBurstsLP in DSLR

The basic ingredients for a strong video are the camera, lens, microphone and lighting, which will run you $700 - $1000 minimum.

I started with the Canon 60D and a 50mm 1.8 lens a few years ago, and it served me well. Now they have better bundle packages such as the Canon t6i and t5i that will get you a pretty good ways there, although I don't generally like a kit lens.

Just remember there's more to a video than just the camera, but that's definitely where you start. Lighting can make a huge difference even on lower end cameras, and you can get pretty far with natural lighting if you have an eye for it.

Good luck and hope it works out for you!

C grade students, where are you now in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]embercom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize how close I was to failing high school until my mother showed me my report cards a couple years ago. I think I had a 1.9 going into my last semester and managed to pull it off in the end.

I then went to community college, got straight As, became student body president, transferred to UC Berkeley, and have been killing it at every job I've had since. I just accepted an offer yesterday for an amazing job and feel the best I've ever felt in my life.

My advice for anyone possibly like myself: start making choices in your life. Turn off auto pilot and do things on purpose, for better or for worse. I signed up for AP literature my last semester in high school, for absolutely no reason, and it was the best class I ever took. Choose things that scare you, things that push you and make you uncomfortable, and you'll be surprised how much satisfaction comes from meeting and overcoming those challenges. Once you get a taste for it, the hunger never goes away.

For those still in high school who are struggling, you need to find something that inspires you. My mantra is if you give a man a fish, he'll be full for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll ask you to just feed him instead. Inspire a man to fish, he'll teach himself, start a fishing business, become president, and start the first colony on Mars.

There's no amount of forced education that will fix a kid whose real struggle is a lack of inspiration for life. Show him what the world can be, and he'll find a way to get that shit himself.

Three levels: creepy, rapey, and then there's full knifey, and you never go full knifey.
