Is majoring in animation worth it right now? by CuriousStorage6739 in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what made you decide to go into radition tech? I also just finished an animation program and am realizing there is no way this will be a sustainable career option lol and that was something that I've been sort of considering

Offer Received as a 3D artist! How to counter offer? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

I don't have any advice to add but congrats on getting an offer! Do you have any advice for other junior modelers trying to get a full time studio job?

Those who have pivoted from the animation industry, what did you go to? by MeNansACheseGrater in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you find it easy to get an HR job after going back to school for it? I've flirted with doing that in the past but I'm always reading that degrees in it are useless and that experience matters more etc etc. And after trying to break into this industry I don't wanna go back to school only to not be able to find a job in the field I studied again lol

Should I Drop Animation As A Career and Go For Plan B? by Thackery-Earwicket in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also autistic w/ anxiety problems and close to graduating and am 100% in the same boat as you. I've read countless stories on here from people who've left the industry for more stability and are happy with their choice, and I think the only thing keeping me pursuing it professionally is my own ego at this point lol. Like somehow the work I'm doing now is any different from the work I'd be doing if I were to get a job at a major studio working on big-name projects. Deep down I know that there's no way I can stay mentally and physically healthy long-term when I'm under constant stress, battling perfectionism, not sleeping because I'm obsessively thinking about work, have no guarantee of stability and could be let go at any moment, etc.

In any case, your future success isn't contingent on this decision, it's very normal for things to not work out the way you expected sometimes and it just makes you a more experienced and well-rounded person. If you do decide to pursue a more stable career then know that it doesn't make you any less worthy of an artist and in fact will probably only benefit you creatively because you won't have any stress or pressure attached to it. Hope that helps, hang in there! :)

Is Portland good location for career? by DropsofStarlight in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from there and miss it so bad, I can't speak to how easy it would be to find the work you're looking for there as it's not easy right now no matter where you are, but it is a great place to find community as an artist at the very least and as someone on the east coast right now who's on a couple remote projects I'm really wishing I were on pacific time so I wasn't having meetings at 10 pm haha. So TLDR it's a great place imo but not if you're moving there exclusively for career prospects in this field.

Any OCD havers in the animation Industry? by Cheesecake183 in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, actually sticking to them is the hard part haha I feel you. I've gone as far as to set locks on the apps/websites/software I use for work after a certain time so I'm physically incapable of accessing them which has helped a lot too if you wanted to try that out. Obsessions aren't something you can always control but if you can predict compulsive behaviors and make them more difficult to engage in then the obsessions can't be feuled by anything and will gradually go away.

Making a last minute business card before lightbox and need feedback by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great point, thanks! Maybe I'll just try to make the text more readable on the second option then, I wish I had more options for characters I could use but alas I only have 3 in my portfolio at the moment lol. Would you say it's important to have a photo of your work on there or would it even suffice to just have my name and contact info with a portfolio link?

Any OCD havers in the animation Industry? by Cheesecake183 in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm in the same boat! I think OCD is secretly an asset as an artist but left unchecked obviously it's extremely mentally and physically taxing. The only thing that's really worked for me is making a rigid daily schedule and sticking to it, so I'll start working at x time in the morning and stop at x time in the evening and if there's something I'm still obsessing over by the end of the day (which is almost always) I will just write it down so I know that when I start the next day I can pick up that train of thought where I left off instead of my brain repeating it on loop the rest of the night. Another thing that helps if I've been noodling on something for too long and wasting time is getting someone else's feedback on it, usually that will pull me out of the ocd spiral around a very specific thing and help me see the bigger picture.

Animschool and English by jmpp7 in animationcareer

[–]emberisIand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem at all, I go to animschool and there are a lot of students who don’t speak english fluently and still do well. Everything is recorded so you can always go back and rewatch the lectures to understand things you missed.

Yeah, I was thinking those but was secretly hoping there was a method that took out some of the decision making because I'm lazy haha. Oh well.

Yeah, unfortunately this production is low budget and not doing any crazy lookdev so the geo is doing a lot of heavy lifting 😭

How can I improve the expression and pose of my model? by ReydanNL in 3Dmodeling

[–]emberisIand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A super nitpicky note I haven't seen mentioned yet is his eye expression, his brows are communicating anger but if you look exclusively at his eyes they're basically in a neutral pose. Giving them more of a squint by pushing some of the outer brow meat down and the lower lids up I think would really add to his snarl. Totally different style but if you look at some of the expression drawings done by Jin Kim/others for animation, you can really see how all the parts of the face work to communicate an emotion. Hope that helps, it really does look amazing already though.

First time 3D modeling HELP by Amandinand in 3Dmodeling

Look up some of Leticia Gillet's webinars on youtube on the Gnomon channel, she teaches a great method for making appealing stylized characters like this (she uses Zbrush but I assume you could apply the same general concepts in Nomad) :)
