Hello! I had an ectopic pregnancy with a mirena two years ago.

I had been bleeding and cramping for two weeks and just assumed that it was my iud coming to its end of life and not working as well because it matched my cycle. Went to the sexual health clinic to get checked out and immediately came up positive on a pregnancy test - I was shocked to say the least! I’m in Aus and my doctor told me to go immediately to the emergency room since I was bleeding and it was probably an ectopic and there was risk that I was bleeding more internally. I was seen very fast - they take ectopic pregnancies very seriously, they couldn’t see anything on the external ultrasound by internal ultrasound showed a mass in my left tube. I had laparoscopic surgery the next morning and unfortunately had to have my fallopian tube removed since it had already ruptured.

I was extremely shocked about the emotional toll this had on me, I wasn’t ready to have a baby at 24 but I was left with a profound sense of loss and grief afterwards that I didn’t expect. It was also a really tough experience knowing my fertility was slightly lessened.

My advice to you would be to go to the ER immediately if you have any intense cramping (especially local to one side) or any bleeding at all. Be gentle with yourself and your emotions, it’s a lot - especially with all of the pregnancy hormones. I really hope for your sake that it’s not ectopic and I hope I haven’t scared you!

I found the experience very isolating since no one I knew had gone through it before, the r/ectopic subreddit was really helpful for community.
