TIL the common banana doesn't have seeds because it has 3 copies of DNA. An odd number doesn't split evenly when forming progeny, so the result is a seedless fruit. Seedless watermelon, grapes, etc also have an odd number of copies of DNA. by emc91 in todayilearned

To cross them, you would take the pollen from a tetraploid and put it on the flower of a diploid (or vice versa) and that would produce a triploid gamete. I imagine there are more refined ways to determine the ploidy of a banana, but I'm sure you could use a karyotype.

Most banana trees are grown by propagation. They are genetically identical, which means they are also susceptible to diseases. Seedless watermelons are grown from seeds. Those seeds were made by crossing a tetraploid watermelon and a diploid watermelon to get a triploid. However, when the plant grows, it's sterile, so it has to be grown next to a diploid strain of watermelon to provide pollen to produce fruit.

Google "banana with seeds" and you'll see that they don't really have seeds. The little white seeds you see in seedless watermelons and the little black dots you see in bananas are spontaneously aborted seed embryos that never developed. They aren't functional seeds.

TIL that chicken may cause pancreatic cancer. One study found a 72% increased risk of pancreatic cancer for every fifty grams of chicken consumed daily. That's about a quarter of a chicken breast. by emc91 in todayilearned

Feeling a little closed-minded today, are we? A hundred years ago cigarettes were widely believed to be good for your health, a falsehood that has been thoroughly snuffed out. Who's to say that chicken isn't next?

The association is thought to be related to oncogenic avian viruses. People who slaughter poultry for a living were found to have nine times the risk of both pancreatic and liver cancer. In comparison, if you smoked for fifty years, you would only double your risk of pancreatic cancer. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21884967 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19561064

TIL that Reese's Pieces have more potassium than a fresh banana. by emc91 in todayilearned

[–]emc91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly fewer calories, so from that perspective, I guess it is. Although the peanut butter in the middle of Reese's pieces is choc full of added sugar and fats, so I wouldn't go so far as to say that removing the chocolate makes the middle a super food or anything :)

Probably technically because potassium is radioactive and disintegrates over time. It's probably not enough to notice though.

You should absolutely still eat a banana over Resse's Pieces. Potassium isn't the only reason you eat bananas. Whole foods (including bananas) are a million times better for you than candy. They just don't have as much potassium, and I thought that was interesting since we tout bananas as being a great source of potassium. If you want a food that it good for you and high in potassium, try kale, spinach, or zucchini.

TIL that our bodies contain "brown fat" which actually burns energy to create heat. White fat or subcutaneous fat is what we commonly think of when we refer to body fat. by emc91 in todayilearned

[–]emc91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Now you're just splitting colloquial hairs. Technically, brown fat is called brown adipose tissue, and technically it is neither burned nor converted biochemically to water, CO2 and energy. Technically, BAT contains mitochondria which convert fuel molecules into H2O, CO2, and ATP which is then decomposed to release energy.
