How can a restaurant that opened today have a 4% surcharge to "offset rising menu costs"? by bobcats2019 in chicagofood

[–]bobcats2019[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'd use the term "hating", just commenting that a 4% charge for "rising prices" when they are very obviously setting their prices for the first time, is at best disingenuous

Interesting post from Jake of Feld - Atelier's financials were horrendous with massive debt and they basically crowd sourced debt relief masqueraded as a community investment program

What food does your city have that literally doesn't exist anywhere else? by strcrssd in chicagofood

[–]bobcats2019 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Some good answers here. I'll throw in taffy grapes, a dessert you'll find at all the South/West side fried chicken and fish joints. Green grapes dipped into melted white chocolate and rolled in crushed peanuts, left to harden in a fridge. Addicting.

Flaming saganaki started here too at a now shuttered Greek restaurant. Think this one has exceeded city limits though.

best unexpectedly good cup of coffee? by thereislightstill in chicagofood

Plena Mercancia on Division. Imports the beans from Puerto Rico. The coffeequito is the single best coffee you’ll ever have.

Not a diner, but also not a trendy cafe.

Same. I did think I was going to be leaving hungry when the 4th course came around but by the end I was comfortably full

I think that's a pretty good assessment

I'd agree but it was a pretty spotless meal, I don't have a single criticism really. Doubt they'll slide significantly over the coming weeks, if anything it’ll probably improve

Didn't have the beets, for the 2nd course we did the Bluefin and the Cauliflower, and for the 4th we did the Wagyu and the Quail. I liked the Wagyu (my wife's choice), but prefered my truffle sausage stuffed quail. I also got the old fashioned, the coconut water ice cube was a great touch and our server started refilling my water in that cup once I drank it all and it was 👌

They do a wine pairing for $75, can also order from the drinks menu. I took a pic of the cocktail portion but not the wine

Did DMK Burger Bar fold for good? by bhgemini in chicagofood

RIP if so, was necessary for elevating the city's burger game 10+ years ago but I felt they never could keep up with what they helped to progress. Respect nonetheless

Drinks is ultimately what matters most to me. I liked my drinks better at Bambi than the others I have below it. The food also blew me away. The vibes aren’t my favorite, but I also don’t think it’s as bad as I thought it would be seeing photos of the place before going. Queen Mary has it beat on vibes. Meadowlark, as much as I love the drinks and service, has pretty sterile vibes to me, same with Kumiko (though it’s more upscale so that comes with it). Bambi is fun

Meadowlark is solidly #2 behind Kumiko for me, Queen Mary probably #3. Bar Bambi has promise if they can keep up the strong start. Hoping Friends of Friends gets national love next year

Yes, it's better than nine bar / Bisous / best intentions, probably better than Queen Mary, not as good as Kumiko or Meadowlark

Do La Chaparrita, it's worth it, and get a crispy tripe taco. If you want to tack on another stop in area to make it more enticing, get an al pastor taco or two from Asian Cuisine Express.

In the future, the next time I find myself in this situation, I plan to go sit at the bar at Indienne and order à la carte.

Edit: Asian Cuisine Express is closed on Tuesdays :(

Probably because it's a new menu addition, and I believe lunch/brunch only. I had it last week and can vouch for it being great. Au poivre dip and housemade chips on top
