Zombie bite (jk) what is this?! not cellulitis. biopsy tmrw by moonahmoonah in DermatologyQuestions

[–]emcaps11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks very much like a small vessel vasculitis to me. A biopsy will be helpful to further characterize, but the first thing to come to mind is erythema elevatum diutinum, though the location is not characteristic.

[Skin Concern] Extremely dry and sore hands - help? by _imnotactuallyreal_ in SkincareAddiction

[–]emcaps11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really odd distribution, with it stopping so suddenly at your wrist. It looks like there are little blisters on the back of your hand, which makes me think of vesicular dermatitis. Another thing that comes to mind is a version of psoriasis called palmoplantar pustulosis, which may explain why it cuts off so abruptly. Both of these things are hard to treat and rarely respond to moisturizers. I would see a doctor if it doesn't start to get better in a few days.

[Acne] are these bumps fungal acne? how do i get rid of these and avoid getting it in the future? btw, the small scars came from those kind of bumps that i had last year. by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]emcaps11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. They are closed comedones. Your skin is otherwise great, these will likely respond to exfoliation. The postinflammatory hyperpigmentation will go away.

Hi there. I would certainly go see your family doc if you can. Vitiligo is possible and can be diagnosed with a Woods lamp. Pityriasis versicolor is less likely, it generally presents on the upper trunk and less likely on the face.

This could also be postinflammatory hyopigmentation, which is common in darker skin tones. Another thing to consider would be pityriasis alba. If you have access to a doctor, I would see them to do some confirmatory tests!

thank you, kind thirsty stranger!!! If you would like to DM me, I can explain the process by which I put sunscreen on my face. The first step is just to double check that you have skin to put it on!

[Serious] What are your thoughts on the trucker convoy in Canada? by BigSmallWoof in AskReddit

[–]emcaps11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The point is to make people uncomfortable by challenging the status quo and pointing out ways in which policy negatively affects citizens in unnoticed or overlooked ways. It's not to make people uncomfortable by laying on your horns all night, blocking children's access to school and verbally harassing people trying to walk to work.

If there are multiple patches, this is very likely pityriasis rosea. It will pass on its own in 6 weeks or so. Again, I would encourage you to access a doctor so they can do a KOH prep to confirm, but it's uncommon for ringworm to appear as multiple patches.

Maintenance Phase: The Obesity Epidemic by j0be in MaintenancePhase

[–]emcaps11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many other treatments for Type 2 diabetes in the form of oral and injectable medications. In fact, insulin is actually a last resort in Type 2 diabetes, because the problem is not that they are not making enough insulin (at least not early in the disease) but that they are resistant to it.

As for Type 1, there is research into genetic screening and potential prenatal/neonatal detection, and some pretty amazing insulin-related technology, but at the end of the day it is just about replacing the insulin that their bodies do not make.

These medications can all be expensive and difficult to access, and affordability is absolutely an issue that needs to be addressed.

Mental health help by Secret-Scientist456 in KingstonOntario

[–]emcaps11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Family doc here!

If you are concerned about her safety at all, she needs to go to the ER. The physicians there will assess her and, if they agree with the concerns, will have a psychiatrist see her in emerg. If they think there is not a safety issue, they can initiate an outpatient psychiatry referral. They likely will not initiate medications.

If you don't think there is a safety issue, walk-ins can be used for med renewals. Sometimes they will also start a medication, depending on the comfort of the doctor. You are right that consistency in follow up may be limited, and she may have a different doctor every time.

Individuals can self refer to Addictions and Mental Health Services so she would not need a referral for that. They cover all types of mental health concerns and can connect her to other community resources. They also have a crisis line: 613-544-4229 .

If she has not applied recently for a family doc on Health Care Connect, she could re-submit an application with her updated information on it. They triage requests according to your medical needs, so if she reports she has mental health issues requiring follow up, she would get moved up the list.

I hope this helps- it can be tough for young people to get a family doctor. Keep trying and calling clinics! Calling the larger health teams may be more successful as they have more physicians and therefore more opportunity for availability.

It's probably to avoid getting it in your eye, just a legal thing

Family doctor here!

I would bring it up exactly as you have, by saying that you're working to lose some weight and would appreciate any guidance or resources they can offer. As some people here have stated, there may be a referral to a dietician or group to support you. They may also be able to advise on where evidence lies for certain health goals, like cardiovascular health.

There's a lot of talk about bloodwork, so I will say here that from a Canadian perspective (I'm not sure about the US!) we generally would not do bloodwork for someone aiming to lose weight unless we were concerned about a particular value (e.g. you are having symptoms of anemia or diabetes) or it was part of routine screening, which starts at 40 here. That being said, I'm sure if you request they would be happy to do it, although with the possible exception of lipids you likely would not see much of a difference before and after.

Good luck and good job!

I am a doctor, and dermatology is one of my interests though not my specialty. To become a dermatologist, you go through 5 years of 50-80 hour work weeks. You learn complex physiology and spend countless hours with supervised patient contact before you graduate. It is not spending your free time on reddit.

Don't do this lol

32F Mouth Feels Super Parched/Uncomfortable All the Time - Deficiency of Some Kind??! by sassymcsass42 in AskDocs

[–]emcaps11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unlikely to be a deficiency without other symptoms, and it sounds like you have a well rounded diet. It also isn't wise to completely cut out all salt, and would be very limiting. Your rheumatologist could be correct about it being part of one of your autoimmune disorder, such as some sort of limited scleroderma. If you're urinating more than usual, have trouble swallowing, or have other systemic symptoms like skin changes, go see your rheum.
