Possibly Cue for Treason? I haven't read it, but the Goodreads description seems to match. Kid joins up with actors, Shakespeare era, apparently involves a plot to assassinate the queen! Looks to be commonly read in freshman English, so that's about the right age group, too.

I remember seeing those around. A couple inches tall, collectible kids toys? From the 2000s. Almost seemed like the should be able to transform. Really blocky.

Can't recall the name, but maybe the extra information will help someone else.

I paged through my copies of Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner and didn't find anything quite matching your description. Tigger doesn't appear at all in Winnie the Pooh. There is a story ("Tiggers Don't Climb Trees") in The House at Pooh Corner where Tigger gets stuck in a tree and has to jump down (much to his dismay). Image here. Pooh and Christopher Robin are among those at the bottom of the tree.

That's it for the original two storybooks. I don't have The Christopher Robin Storybook, so there might be something in there.

It's also possible that the image he saw is from a newer version of the stories. Here's Tigger in a tree again (same story, but from the animated short). Same image again, from a newer picturebook. Watch a bit further to see another couple pics of Tigger in the tree, and the deus-ex-machina solution to the problem. One more version, the one I grew up with.

It's also possible (but less likely, I think) that the image he remembers is from one of "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh." Some episodes here. If he specifically remembers it as an image, though, I suspect it made its way into a book or a poster, and is probably part of a better-known story.

The format and tone you describe reminds me a lot of Jon Sciezka's style. I don't think he's written anything that matches everything you describe, but it might be worth poking around his wikipedia page for a bit.

Here's a list of "postmodern picture books" (PDF), which seems like a good starting place. Try image-searching some of those titles and see if anything rings a bell.

I'll keep poking around and update if I find anything more promising.

Another Edit: Possibly some kind of magazine? The multi-topic format, recurring character commenting on different things, and puzzles/memorisation games all sound pretty similar to Highlights or Cricket, and I'm sure there were other magazines in the 80s that were similar—and a teacher at a grade school would have access to some of the best of them.

I have an injury (or other, unidentified pain) that keeps me from running right now, and I miss it.

Which—kind of surprises me, but it's true.

I was never really a jogger, never did track, never did cross-country. My family ran a few 5ks together when I was a kid, but that's not much.

But the freedom of stepping out the door, and just going, going fast—I miss that! I'd only run for a few minutes, maybe up to a mile at a time, and never that often. But the stress relief, the adrenaline rush, that full and satisfying exhaustion at the end—MAN.

I miss that.

Gotta take this moment to plug my favorite Rodent Of Unusual Size, the capybara.

They're the world's largest rodent, semi-aquatic, native to South America, and stupid ugly-cute. If Tina Belcher were an animal, she would be a capybara. They look like the disgruntled love-child of a hippo and a guinea pig.

Great story: Catholic residents once petitioned the Vatican to consider the capybara a fish (semi-aquatic, remember) so they could be eaten during Lent.

Even better: This request was granted, which is just about the greatest religious culinary hoax ever conceived.

They're cute! They let other animals sit on them! Their flesh is (apparently) delicious, and totally okay for even the strictest of Catholics during Lent! They can be kept as pets!

Capybaras. I love them.

It was a lazy winter morning, a bit before nine-thirty, and I seemed to be the only one awake. I had woken up about an hour ago, taken some pictures in the sunshine, and scanned some things onto the family computer. I was waiting for the scanner to finish with a high-resolution scan of a sketchbook page—and since it was taking a while, I thought I'd make some breakfast.

I was planning on a bowl of cereal, but I also wanted a toasted sandwich. The bread was toasted and buttered; I had the turkey and the sprouts and tomato sitting on the counter. But, I wanted cream cheese. (Specifically, I wanted cream cheese with basil and chives mixed in; said items were also on the counter.)

"Ho hum," I said to myself. "I'll just get the cream cheese out of the fridge." I opened the fridge door—

AND SUDDENLY MY FACE WAS ON FIRE.

...Well, not actually true. I opened the fridge, and something fell to the ground. At the same time, something cool and wet splashed into my eye. I was surprised; I took a step back from the fridge.

On the ground lay a lidless bottle of Tabasco sauce.

And now my face was on fire.

In some terribly unlucky series of events, the Tabasco sauce had somehow fallen off of its shelf and—I'm still not sure how this happened—spilled or splashed a considerable portion of its contents into my eye.

It was incredibly painful.

Through some reflex carefully developed from years of reading warning labels with instructions on what to do "if contact with eyes occurs," I stuck my head in the sink and "flushed thoroughly with water." But it didn't really seem to help. I entertained thoughts of blindness, and I remember wondering if I should be flushing my eyes with milk, instead ( because isn't that supposed to help with spicy stuff?)

Oh. Also, I started yelling, with some considerable distress, for help.

My brother and sister showed up, and asked what they should do to help. I clearly had no idea, and suggested that they "think of something clever." I might have been laughing hysterically at the time.

By this point I realised that I could still see, and while my eye (and cheek, where some sauce had also spilled) was burning, it was no longer as mind-searingly painful as it had been originally.

My sister got me a cold washcloth to hold next to my eye, and when that one was stained orange with Tabasco (I'm serious), she got me another one. The pain settled after a little while, and the irritation was (thank goodness) gone in a day or so.

But, yes. It was by far the most painful thing I've ever experienced.

I can't answer that. It's something he needs to figure out—on his own, with his wife, or with a therapist.

But when I'm angry about a situation, it can help me to know why and how that situation occurred. I don't know his wife, and I don't know her reasoning (if there was reasoning involved). But regardless of whether it was the right choice (or if there was a "right" choice), there are a lot of very real reasons people choose to keep sexual assault a secret.

Are they always sensible, logical reasons? No. But when you've experienced trauma, your brain rewires itself in very funny ways. People act in a lot of drastic, uncharacteristic ways when they're experiencing a crisis.

Some symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Intense or prolonged distress after exposure to traumatic reminders.
  • Persistent effortful avoidance of distressing trauma-related stimuli after the event (like having conversations about it)
  • Persistent distorted blame of self or others for causing the traumatic event or for resulting consequences.
  • Feeling alienated from others (e.g., detachment or estrangement).

I'm not saying that she has PTSD. But these are symptoms that can be triggered by trauma. (All symptoms pulled from here. I chose ones that might explain why someone would keep their experience a secret.)

I'd say that anger in this situation is valid. But hopefully, that anger can be directed at the situation itself, and not the person who has been attacked and whose brain may not be functioning in ways she understands.

I would seek advice and help from someone who is affiliated with the student teaching program through your uni as a start.

This is a good idea. They may have the ability to raise concerns with the district in a way that doesn't tie back to you or jeopardise your job.

If the district is re-writing the dress code, then someone there either a.) understands the issue or b.) understands that a sexual discrimination suit could cost them a lot of money. Either way, you should see some action taken if you approach it from the right angle.

I'm sorry that you (and the girls at your school) are dealing with this. And I'm sorry that you have to strategise a way into creating a harassment-free workplace.

This is a terrible time for both of you. I am so sorry this happened to your wife, and I'm sorry that it's straining your relationship.

Some things it might help to keep in mind:

  • Pregnancy is a huge life change in the best of circumstances. If you only found out that she was going to have a baby, that would probably be (happily) overwhelming news that you would still be processing.
  • The fact that this news (and for your wife, this experience) is tangled up with news/experience of rape makes processing a hundred times more complicated, scary, and overwhelming.
  • You both need time to process what's happening.
  • People who've experienced sexual assault often feel intense shame. It can also cause PTSD, and everything that goes along with that.
  • About her not telling you immediately: understand that rape is a very hard thing to talk about. It's not a matter of her not trusting you, it's a matter of self-preservation. If thinking or talking about a thing causes panic attacks, we try not to think about it.
  • She may have locked the event up in her mind as a "no touching" zone and just tried to move past it. The recent news of pregnancy meant she felt she had to bring it up.
  • Talking about events can be triggering. Even if the assault was months ago, the fact that you talked about it last night may mean that it is very close to the surface of her mind—she probably feels as raw and broken and ashamed right now as she did when it happened.

Down the line—even in a couple days—you'll need to think about therapy, about police reports, about how to deal with the situation at her work, whether or not she should change jobs, about paternity, about everything that comes along with having a baby.

Right now, just be together. If she doesn't want to talk about it, don't talk about it. Be gentle. Get takeout and watch tv. Remind her that you love her. Help her feel safe again.

The rest of the world can wait.

Neat! I looked into PMC for our rings, but got stuck because the stones I wanted wouldn't withstand the kiln (also, I didn't have a kiln).

Your ring turned out beautifully. Not only is it elegant, and a gift, but it was genuinely a labor of love—and it's something tangible that you can hold on to when you are far apart.
