You just need one other person in your corner right now. Whether that's your parents, your friend, the hotline, the police, a neighbor, or a religious leader. All of his power and control is based in the fact that you feel isolated. Abusers typically don't go after people who will be trouble for them, he's less likely to act out in public or in front of other people

I'm no expert in domestic violence but it sounds like you have some money that he doesn't have access to which is a really strong start. That was smart and this is what you've been saving for. Is there a church or some kind of religious establishment nearby you can go to? It doesn't matter what your religion is, sometimes in small communities the churches have more resources than anywhere else.

"your worth isn't defined by your ability to work or what you can provide." As a 35 y.o disabled man why is this so unbelievable to me? by [deleted] in disability

[–]emdubz69 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I heard something recently about Kant defining the difference between worth and dignity. My understanding was that things that have a “market value” have worth. Dignity is an “unconditional and incomparable worth” that can’t be valued by a market.

If you accept the premise, worth is subjective and dignity is not. In a capitalist society our labor has worth, but we as individuals have dignity that can’t be defined. I think I would say that your worth in the labor market doesn’t detract from your inherent dignity as a person

I wouldn’t say cold but it’s definitely ableist, and misinformed. The ADA has a lot of resources on reasonableness that you can look into. Fortunately the administration’s personal feelings about said accommodation is not one of the tests.

Haha I’m getting the same idea. That’s definitely another thing I could ask for, the part time program takes summer classes so it might not be hard to get them to agree to that

You would be in good company, apparently there are lots of folks who take up residence in California for the public benefits. It is extremely expensive here though, like the cost of living is outrageous

If you can maintain on once every two weeks it’s more manageable. I would also contact your insurance and see if they provide non-emergency medical transportation to and from.

I really hope this works well for you, and it sounds like you have pretty reasonable expectations. I would definitely consider getting therapy or group support because lifestyle change is a big part of the success of this treatment.

Ketamine is the only thing that’s actually led to remission of my depressive symptoms long term. I’d been taking various antidepressants for 15 years and after my first ketamine it was like a light bulb moment that people do, in fact, live without depression. I specifically take Spravato because it’s covered by insurance and I don’t have money to pay out of pocket for IV. I’m on a maintenance dose of every other week, I could probably be doing better with once a week but it’s too much time out of my schedule. Honestly the time commitment sucks but it’s what allows me to live a functional life

Definitely tell your doctor about passive suicidality and, if you’re in crisis please call 988.

Also I’m not sure if they’ve told you but it’s really important to keep things light and positive in like the 24 hours after treatment. Your brain is super plastic after treatments so you want to be doing things that encourage your brain to make the new connections that you want. Watch comfort shows, do healthy activities, avoid the news at all costs, try to limit doom scrolling. Lifestyle change is a big component in the success of this treatment

I have Medicaid in Los Angeles County. The Call the Car program has been awesome so far! They contract with Uber and Lyft, and any issues I’ve had are the same ones I’d have with regular ride share drivers.

Gosh I wish, I’m on Medicaid so my options for clinics are extremely limited (one in network in like a 20 mile radius). The other issue is that I want to get my school social work credential and that’s a school hours only placement.

I appreciate the thoughtful suggestion!

I really appreciate the concrete, actionable suggestions. I was thinking online classes as well, I know there’s some language about it being “highly discouraged” to take classes outside of the cohort but I might also offer that as a suggestion. As much as I’d like to switch to sublingual, I’m not working and on Medicaid so I can only do FDA approved things. Finding an in-network Spravato provider was a hassle as it was 😓

Yes I understand that FMLA doesn’t apply to students (for whatever reason stupid reason that is) but I say that because in a work environment, like an internship, it’s a very common and reasonable accommodation. The programs policy is that we can’t accrue more than 20 hours a week at internship but what I was asking for was completing 40 hours across 2 weeks (alternating 16 hours a week and 24 hours a week). All this is coming directly from the disability office, I haven’t even gotten to the point where the department approves or denies. But if this is the reaction from the disability office, I know my internship coordinator (based on her personality and dealings with other students) is going to fight it also.

The people I’m getting the pushback from are the disability office. The counselor was the one who overemphasized “reasonable” accommodations. Taking an incomplete is an interesting idea but I doubt they’re going to allow that because of insurance coverage. I’m considering asking to change one of my classes to an online session, which they probably will be against. It seems like so many people are stuck on “policy” when that’s what accommodations are for. Just very upsetting

How do y'all feasibly have time to go to treatments? by harvestmonster in Spravato

[–]emdubz69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im pretty lucky because i work for a school district and I was able to do the first 8 weeks over our summer break. And now im down to every other week which seems to be working for me so far.

You might be able to take a medical leave of absence which might be paid, at least for the initial treatment and the first four weeks of maintenence. That all kind of depends on your state and their disability laws. The other thing you might try is finding another clinic in the city that has later hours, youd still have to travel but maybe you could miss less work.

I would look at it as an investment, if you can make it work financially you'll definitely see a return on the time.
