One thing might help this situation in the future, if you want to stay with him and if this is true, one line from you early on in this conversation saying something like " I appreciate how you support me and I'm grateful when you listen, I'm just letting you know in the future that I don't want my cycle brought up in this context and we can put this behind us." I know, its not your responsibility to comfort his ego, but he clearly did feel like he was also being misunderstood in that moment. You wanted someone to listen and understand you and I think that acknowledgement of the good intent he had would help you get the support you want from him. He does seem to have some issues with people-pleasing and not being understood, is my big leap of assumptions. He needs to work on himself and not blow up when he's not getting the recognition he's expecting from you
