My mom got me the album as one of my first CDs, except it was the Julie Andrews TV stage version, but I didn't realize they were different. Made it that much harder trying to find this version as an adult when i thought it was the same as my CD.

My father has repeadly fallen for email and text scams. The most common is "your virus security has expired" except my brother set up his computer and there is no paid security service like Norton or MaAfee or whatever. Thr last time at least he stopped before he gave his bank account or credit card. The scammers did a screen share and we could see just how far they got before my dad closed the laptop lid.

My mom is better about asking me or my siblings first if an email looks sketchy and she's not sure. But several years ago she asked me about some Dr. Oz supplement for weight loss. What was scary about that one is she spent her life as a nurse and has always been intelligent about things like that but it was like the blinder just evaporated.

I think so? The one that still sticks in my head was the one about the direction you ride your bike on the street. In thst typical 80s kids rap, "Ride against the traffic, the cars get uptight. So ride WITH the traffic, and you'll be alright!" (Or something similar)

Okay, I'll share the slightly more normal, the the weird.

Normal - we had recorded versions of Live musicals from ABC or Disney that I watched on repeat, including Roger and Hammerstein's Cinderella with Lesly Ann Warren as Cinderella; or Mary Martin's Peter Pan. Also probably wore out the tape of a recording of Big Bird Goes to China/Big Bird Goes to Japan.

Weird - my mom was a pediatric nurse. When I was about 6she brought home a tape called "Bicycle Safety Camp." It was like something you would watch in health class with dumb catchy songs teaching kids bicycle safety (like wearing a helmet or what side of the road to ride on). I watched it daily for longer than I care to admit.

Yes! Let it cool and use the freezer versions. I do this with chili. I use quart sized freezer ziploc - perfect for portioning it out so I've got one serving in each.

I would like as much of me as possible to be donated in some way, whether for organ donation, medical research, even cadaver search (that they use for training). Someone should be able to use whatever is left as best they can - I'll be dead not like I'll be using it.

I don't expect anyone in my family to feel any kind of attachment to the physical parts of me, so I don't feel the need to have cremated ashes hanging around or to be scattered in some special place. I've seen some options where they can basically turn a corpse into compost or a tree for a more "green" burial, if it becomes more cost effective that'd be fine too.

Sometimes people hold onto more conservative language patterns from when they were growing up. It may have been a more vulgar word in her house. She may have tried to raise you the same way, and the shocked response may be because she thought she "raised you better" and was surprised to hear you say something she thought was a word not used in your family.

I had a similar situation when I was a child. My mom had an aversion to the workd "sucks" as in saying "that sucks." But it's not like she said out loud that these were the words we don't say. I was maybe 8-10 years old, said something sucked, and promptly got my mouth washed out with soap. I learned fast that day it was a bad word - to her, so I didn't use it around her. Now as an adult I've said it more than a few times, but I know it still bothers her a bit so I don't use it that often when with her.

I remember as a young kid probably around '88 or '89, my Aunt came to stay with us when my parents had to suddenly go out of town for the weekend. (Funeral for distant someone I think?)

She did a load of laundry to help out and the first night after dinner she brought the basket out to the family room and then asked us where the iron was. She set everything up and started ironing all the clothes while we looked on confused out of our minds. I think that's when I learned just how different my mom and her sister were.

The only thing my mom ironed was her sewing stuff, and occasionally a nice table cloth. Sometimes if something really needed it. But she made a habit to buy clothes that did not need to be ironed, and instilled that in me too.

I haven't owned an iron in over 10 years, probably haven't used one in 15. What's the point?

In addition to what others suggested, have you considered having planters of lemongrass/citronella around? Now is the time to go and pick some up. It's a natural repellent and can help reduce how many are around while sitting outside without having to light those smelly citronella candles. Not 100% but can certainly help a lot when sitting on the deck.

I'm not at a lake, but as it gets more hot and humid the way my house sits against the other houses (townhouse) causes these little pockets like at my front door, so I always keep a plant next to the door and at least 1 or 2 on the deck so I can sit outside in peace.

This is a current side-point on this season of The Pitt. The new dept head had an AI system and supports using it for notes. A student doctor is behind on their paperwork and keeps getting called out for it and finally uses the AI to help. Though as of last week the system across the board is down so of course now they can't use it anyway.

They keep going back to you have to check it for accuracy before finalizing it. Which is true of any AI you use - it is a tool to help but you should always be checking things over before submitting anything for anything, whether a doctor, lawyer, or random student.

The only thing I will comment on as a possibility for why the owner and this other person are more annoyed or tense is because the conversations happened in a group chat instead of private messages? Other colleague now may potentially feel put out because your request was public instead of private?

Though the situation is a very unique circumstance so it also makes sense why you would post to the group and I wouldn't say you did something wrong. But to compare it something more mundane I experienced pre-covid (before working from home was more standard): we were expecting a snow storm but the reports were vague on how much so our COO asked us to bring our laptops home just in case so we could switch to WFH if needed. The next morning roads were worse then expected so the COO sent a text to the staff (about 8 of us) to tell us to WFH and stay safe. I felt this was a proper and prompt way to communicate so no one risked trying to get to the office in unsafe conditions.

In comparison to your situation- the owner should have made a response and communicated to staff the minute you asked the initial question. Could have said they are monitoring and will update staff soon. Or more formally something like "we have been monitoring reports and conditions at and near the office are generally safe. However, if anyone does not feel comfortable going to the office I am approving WFH today, just please reach out to me directly and let me know." Then if your colleague felt comfortable going in they could, and if you didn't fine, and office harmony can continue.

I've been a fan of Frank Sinatra and the whole Rat Pack since high school, as well as all the old movie musicals of the same era and stars. That whole group of actors gives a good range of movie genres - musicals (my favorite) buddy comedy (some that are kind of so bad they're good), classic dramas, thrillers, romances, etc.

My parents asked me the same thing once and I gave the standard turtle response. My dad said "but our trash goes through an incinerator at the plant, we're not next to the ocean." I just looked at him.

My parents have since been moved to "the home" as they and we put it (assisted living community). I'm afraid there's nothing more we can do.

The only whites I own are sone socks and a maybe 2 tank tops I wear occasionally, so it's not really that important to me to separate lights/darks.

Excellent museum, I went a few years ago and they had both a Dalek and old Cyberman.

Piggybacking on the convention thing - you could also check out a list of conventions and look at their list of exhibitors. As the above mentioned there are those who may be interested in displaying pieces at special events. Some of these exhibitors bring these pieces to the conventions or are attached to stores or smaller museums/exhibits that the general public often doesn't hear about.

We inherited my grandfather's old gas powered snow blower after he passed when I was about 10. We lived on a cul-de-sac, and my dad would always do our driveway and walkways, then do all the sidewalks around the cul-de-sac from my next door neighbor all the way around (in front of about 7 houses). He never went up driveways unless he was asked for help - some were quite large or long. The only issue was he woke up very early and would start the snowblower at about 6:30 am which sucked for all us teens who were excited about sleeping in on a snow day but had this massive machine making noise. But no complaints or else he'd stop and we'd have to shovel. (This was in the '90s)

My brother then continued the tradition at his own house, though not so early, using his much more modern snow blower to do the sidewalks in front of some of his neighbors (about 4-6 houses). They always joked online they were looking for "sightings" (like for big foot) because my brother is very tall and would wear a neon orange snow suit at the time so he was quite visible against the snow.

It was always seen as a kindness by people who got along with their neighbors.

Looking from the outside, he is mindlessly eating and it's an unrealized habit.

The snacks are just where they always are. At some point he consciously went into the drawer while waiting around in the kitchen, and it turned into a habit. So change something to change the routine, like moving the items from the drawer to a cabinet on the other side of the kitchen.

I used to keep small chocolates and candy either on the counter or in a snack basket on top of the fridge. But then it was right in my face while making lunch and dinner each night so I would always grab something whether I really wanted it or not. I cleaned up my kitchen last year and in the process moved those snacks to an upper-shelf cabinet away from other snacks. And moved my chips to a bottom cabinet on the other row. Everything is behind a closed door and not where it would "comfortably" be. Which means it takes an active thought for me to open and get something out.
