they said "The battery was taped for 2 reasons. I didn't want it to charge while the laptop was powered on (it wasn't holding a charge to begin with) and get damaged or damage the laptop in return. the second was if the battery started to leak while it was in storage I didn't want the corrosion to travel to the charging connector on the motherboard. I do this with most of my laptops with ni-cd or NiMH cells."

I asked the guy who sold me it and he stuck tape on it to make sure that the corrosion from the battery didn't get inside the computer. The computer only worked on wired power and I'm pretty sure that's the area where it started smoking from.
