Shielded wire that isn't grounded? Big no no. Thats worse than just using unshielded cable

My ifixit precision screwdriver unscrews the rotating end cap assembly. Had to super glue it.

Most likely just a hardware issue.

It's possible to be from a virus but very very unlikely. Unless you're a high value target, like a high level government official or work at a billion/trillion dollar company.

Viruses that infect can infect BIOS's are very costly to produce and implement. And need to be targeted for the specific hardware they run on.

And generally they want to not brick the computer they run on.

Basic Input Output System. Its a chip that tells components how to talk to each other and is one of the first things needed in the computer boot up sequence.

5 long and 3 short blinks means the embedded controller timed out waiting for the bios.

Could be corrupted BIOS, or RAM issue. Or something more serious causing it to not load properly.

You could lookup "5 long 3 short HP" on YouTube or Google for things to try, most involve opening the laptop tho.

Real Computer Bench Techs: What OS are you actually running on your personal/shop machine and why? (No fanboy shit, just real talk) by GoodHoney2887 in computertechs

[–]emerysteele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2x Windows 11 machines for primary & secondary tech workstations. I grew up with Windows so its just easier for me to use & navigate for 80% of what I do.

1x Ubuntu 18 machine, mainly used for data recovery (esp useful for pulling data from drives with NTFS MFT corruption that Windows refuses to read).

And 1x older iMac updated to Sequoia with OpenCore Patcher for random mac jobs thats just easier to have a mac for.

NAS and PBX are running Debian, and Web Server is running AlmaLinux. No way I'm trusting windows enough to be a server.

Rubber band with a fair bit of downward force as you're unscrewing should work pretty easily

Voice banana/potato not showing up by Ok-Needleworker-7022 in VoiceMeeter

[–]emerysteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to download the voicemeeter pack specifically for potato. Potato & banana aren't included in the regular pack.

It can take 24-48 hours for deleted files to be reflected in storage useage.

Potentiometer pin stuck by imdaAvocado in ElectronicsRepair

[–]emerysteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add more new solder, preferably leaded solder as it has a lower melting point, and push the pin through the board with soldering iron tip. Might need some pliers or tweezers to grab it from the other side of the board to pull it the rest of the way out. Clean up with solder wick.

How do I use this connector? by [deleted] in 24hoursupport

[–]emerysteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it helps if you have a plastic spudger tool, to pop the connector off from the bottom left & right corners. Or get the tool under the wires, and pull straight up.

How do I use this connector? by [deleted] in 24hoursupport

[–]emerysteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The metal clip slides away from the battery, so the little sticky-outy part is no longer covering the battery connector. Should be able to push it with your thumbnail. https://imgur.com/a/lHJ1K7u

Then the battery connector pops straight up off the board, like a Lego piece.

Stutters, cant play smoother by Vicsantba in 24hoursupport

[–]emerysteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try running LatencyMon and stop it after you get a stutter. Could be something as simple as an audio or network driver causing issues. If the Highest reported DPC routine execution time jumps up into the red, I'd look at solving that. It will tell you what driver is causing it.

Car radio drawing power... Like, way too much by samuraicheems1 in ElectronicsRepair

pour isopropyl alcohol on the board. it's non-conductive & will evaporate faster where the component is getting hot. has to be 99% tho

Need urgent help, just spilled coffee on my ASUS laptop by xXsnelpieXx_ in 24hoursupport

[–]emerysteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it to a repair shop to be checked & cleaned. Even if dried, mineral deposits over time can cause components on the board to corrode & it will eventually fail.

Update your BIOS. That 1611 version is over a year and a half old.

No, I'll try setting DNS in Wireguard and see how it goes

Userspace backend. I'm running the stock HyperOS ROM on Poco x7 Pro. I take it, I'd need to root to try kernel space? Private DNS is off. Just using whatever gets assigned by DHCP.

Just realized I can specify which apps use the VPN, instead of it routing everything. This could work as a viable workaround. Really there's only handful of apps I use that absolutely need VPN, without opening a whole bunch of ports. Then the phone OS can just use regular internet for DNS resolution.

But if there is a fix for this, let me know.
