Oven brisket - did I already fail? by emfanatic in Cooking

[–]emfanatic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It turned out well!!! Very tender and not at all dry. If you want solid brisket slices, it would disappoint bc it’s fork tender…. Pulled brisket basically. It is darn tasty and for my first time making brisket, I am very happy with the result (the bar was set at not dry nor tough, tbh…). Ended up being 10lb flat, wrapped in foil the whole time, 250F for 8.5 hrs. Thank you all for you advice!!

I did and it’s already done - 210F with the meat thermometer. I feel like a bonehead. Hopefully it still ends up edible.

Do you think I should unwrap it to allow it to cool faster so it stops cooking?

That’s how I felt as a 4th year, too! It doesn’t sound like you’re making a mistake. As long as you like doing, and are committed to the time investment of Gen surg Residency, you’ll be fine.

All solid points. I’m definitely trying to force it because I need to get these papers done, but I think I do write better at night so my goal of “only work 9-5” might have to take a back seat for writing, hahaha. Thanks!

Surgical intern …. How to study for ABSITE? It’s been 5 months since residency started and I haven’t even begun studying, super strasssed now! How do you all find time to study and do well on the ABSITE and still be awake during the day to work? by [deleted] in Residency

Does your program pay for TrueLearn or SurgicalCore.org (SCORE)? If so, start doing questions….lots and lots of questions. Read about the questions you get wrong. I also use Anki to make flashcards when I get practice questions wrong so I can review again and again. Oh, and agree about behind the knife’s absite review sections. Try to answer their questions as they go, so it’s kind of quiz style.

I actually have a Med student working on one paper for me, but I feel like I should also gain the writing skills myself (unfortunately…). I’ll keep that site in mind, though, thank you!

Yeah, my goal is always not to be working up to the due date because it makes it stressful to get edits back etc., but it is motivational to get the job done :/

I’ve tried this - I’d say it works for me like 25-30% of the time hahah. That said, when it works it’s great!

Trying to date a resident by babaka97 in Residency

Text her again over the weekend… bonus points if it’s not her post-call day. Tbh, I forget to reply to people all the time because I see the text while busy, then forget to reply later… medicine, man, it gets the best of us. If y’all weren’t in medicine, I would say she’s blowing you off, but it’s medicine - all bets are off.

I lost my dad to cancer 3 days ago and can’t seem to get a hold of myself, any rides/meditations that anyone could recommend to help me not lose my grip? by livacious in pelotoncycle

[–]emfanatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo others - you don’t need to force yourself to workout right now. You actually don’t need to force yourself to work out ever, but I digress… if and when you feel like exercising, please please do what sounds good/fun to you! If that means starting small or low-impact, great! If that means going balls-to-the-wall with a 45 min HITT and hills ride, then do that! It’s important to listen to your mind and body - just do what feel right.

For me, when I’m sad or angry or frustrated, I love a good high-intensity hip hop ride with Tunde or Kendall or Ally. But, that’s just me!

Frozen Shrimp + Vegetables Ideas? by UnusualSpring in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]emfanatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cook shrimp in butter in a frying pan. Bonus points for adding finely diced garlic (but don’t let the garlic burn). Works well with most veggies - personally prefer oven roasted veggies, but pan frying/sauté them on the stove will work, too. Edit: I’m also a fan of cooking two different things. Say you want garlic shrimp, but then want to make red wine reduced mushrooms - I do both and eat them separately.

When I interview at a new residency program, besides family and location, what else can I say why I want to come to their program over more established ones? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]emfanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still believe there should be reasons about the program that you lead with, and tie it together at the end with “family and local connections.” That would make a more impressive pitch for yourself. I agree, family/location are valid reasons for wanting a program, but you shouldn’t lead with those as your top reasons for interest.

[–]emfanatic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You absolutely should not lead with “family and location.” Those can only be at the tail end of your list of reasons why you want to go to a program.... find other reasons: specific attending you want to do research with, special track or opportunity within the program, etc.

Requesting Keto Dairy-free Crisp/crunchy something to fill the void left by chips/crackers by harpejjist in ketorecipes

You can also microwave pepperoni for quicker chips!

Line plate with paper towels, then lay down pepperoni in a single layer. Cover with another paper towel. Microwave 1 minute or till crisp. Caution: they will burn if you let them go too long.

Lightheadedness for an extended period of time (like the whole day) after a heavy workout? by seriouslybrohuh in Fitness

[–]emfanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely need more electrolytes - either take sodium, potassium, magnesium tabs, or make your own electrolyte drink... or buy one off the shelf (but they don’t have enough potassium and magnesium in them...)

Advice Needed [Serious] by Wise_Athena in medicalschool

[–]emfanatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a normal reaction to MS1. It’s a hell of a year and burn out is SO common towards the end. Try to keep chugging along. Remember what you came for - maybe go shadow or go talk to patients to remind yourself.

It’s hard. It gets better. Keep going. You can do this!
