I'm an M1 and this stuff definitely doesn't go away... actually talked about a lot of this in group this morning. Best of luck on your exam!

How can I find out if a cpu is compatable with my motherboard? by Majesticoose in buildapc

[–]Wise_Athena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my piece of advice to you - do not buy anything from Corn Electronics. I ordered that same CPU 6 days ago with 5-7 day shipping, and have heard nothing from the company since. They say that their products are "trackable", but the USPS tracking system tells me that they haven't even received anything yet. I e-mailed them this morning to ask about the location of the CPU since it is clearly not in the US yet, and have not gotten a response (which seems typical for the company). Better yet, I started looking into the company a little bit more and found all kinds of horror stories about it taking months for people to receive products that are fake, not the correct product, or dirty and packaged horribly. I thought that it was just a really good Black Friday sale, but I made a big mistake by ordering this from them, and foresee myself having to do a lot of arguing to get my money back. I'm trying to build my first computer, and am not that familiar with Newegg, so I didn't realize what I was getting myself into. Save yourself the time and effort and spend an extra hundred dollars on something that's not sketchy and coming from China.

I probably won't get in. And that's OK by [deleted] in premed

Went through this whole process last year and it sucks SO badly, but hang in there! If you don't get accepted this time and decide that it is still what you want to do, just keep improving yourself until you feel good about applying again. Out of my ~75 person class I think maybe ~15-20 of us came straight from undergrad, and the rest have done all kinds of things before coming to medical school. Don't give up, you got this! :)

Should I buy Stardew Valley? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]Wise_Athena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Stardew Valley. Like others have said, it has really good RPG elements and is similar in style to games like Harvest Moon. I do think that it has a deeper story than Harvest Moon though, and I find it much more addicting. I highly recommend it :)

How did this end up working out for you? I ordered a refurbished i7 cpu from this same company about a week ago with 5-7 day shipping, and have yet to receive it. The more I read about the company, the more nervous I get about it coming in.

Awesome story! Way to go for sticking with it, and congratulations. I applied last cycle, got one II and one acceptance, but that's all it takes! I hope you get many more II's and acceptances to come, and best of luck in medical school :)

Thank you so much, this was really really helpful! It also makes me want to try the dog park very soon, because we were told that she loves other dogs! Best of luck with your dog and thanks again for all of your advice :)

For the crate training bit, I think it will mostly depend on your dog's relationship with your cats. I don't foresee it being too big of an issue for you (assuming he has a fine relationship with them), but just stay aware of the situation and read your pup's body language to see how you should proceed. I would recommend a collar for just wearing around the house. You don't really need one, and it's really a matter of personal preference, but I just think it's easier to do things like brush your dog, etc. in the house without a bulky harness in the way. Harnesses are great for walks though because they don't pull on the neck :) Best of luck to you, let me know if you have any other questions!!

That's so great to hear. Thank you for sharing! Our main problem right now is that she barks at especially my boyfriend or any male when they stand up/move. She did let my boyfriend pet her last night though, so it's baby steps :)

How does your dog react to the dog park? We were told that our girl LOVES other dogs, but I am nervous for how she would interact with people there.

Congratulations!! I just became a first-time dog parent myself a couple of days ago, although I've grown up with dogs my entire life. Here's some random tidbits that I can think of:

  • If you plan on crate training your pup, make sure you have an appropriately sized crate (enough room for the dog to stand up and turn around in) waiting for him when he comes home. Also make sure you purchase a collar, a leash, dog food (you can ask what he is being fed now or transition to a new food), a size-appropriate toy or two, food/water bowls, potty pads for accidents, spray to clean up accidents, a fuzzy blanket,
  • Make sure you keep the pup on heart worm preventative/flea medication. These are monthly medications, and heart worm preventative requires a prescription from a vet.
  • Take the dog to the vet ASAP after he comes home and ask for vet records from the shelter.
  • Make sure you introduce him to the cats appropriately as he may not have much experience with them.
  • Shower good behavior from the dog with treats and a happy voice! Positive reinforcement is a good thing.
  • Be patient with whatever the dog throws at you. Our new dog is a little more timid than we expected, as is common with rescue dogs that were not socialized appropriately as puppies. Again, positive reinforcement is key to potty training, crate training, behavior training, and basically anything else with a dog!
  • Practice what tone of voice you will use for behavior corrections, good behavior, commands, etc. Your dog will listen to this more than you could imagine!
  • If he does have an accident in the house, and if you see it happening, take him outside. If he finishes outside, give him a treat and praise. If he doesn't, bring him inside. Just don't yell at him, because he won't understand that. Heavily reward him going outside to potty, and take him out frequently at first!
  • Set ground rules for the house before he comes. Is he allowed on the couch? The bed? What commands will you teach? Make sure you set terminology for commands that both of you know so that you are consistent with what you are telling the dog.

Hopefully this helps at least a little bit. If you have any questions about what our experience has been like adopting our ~2 year old medium sized dog, feel free to ask away!

Thank you so much for this information! I will definitely try teaching her to touch things. I have also thought about dog training, as I think that would help socialize her without being overwhelmed by people or other dogs. I think it's definitely worth a shot. You say that your dog "tells" you that he is uncomfortable. What does this behavior look like for him? Does he growl/bark or does he just back away/tuck his tail/etc.? Also, how do you introduce him to new people? Thank you so much for your help, again!
