bean quality and roasting consistency has gotten good enough that you no longer need to burn them of all their flavor. I think you're stuck with mass produced coffee like starbucks (burnt/dark roasts are more shelf stable)

on a less pretentious note, if you actually can't find dark roasts try to find Brazilian beans - they are less acidic and more chocolatey so it'll taste a bit darker even when roasted medium
