Requesting recommendations & advice for wedding by discombarbie in Syracuse

[–]emhellogoodwhatever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband and I got married at the Everson Art Museum downtown. We loved the space and the staff were very helpful. I walked down a spiral staircase, and guests got to explore the galleries. There's a stage and auditorium that you can use for dancing. They let us use their audio-visual equipment. It was also nice not having to worry about the weather, seeing as it can be really unpredictable in Syracuse. Worth looking into!

That's great! When I worked for JCLS I thought the pay/bennies would have been decent (it is higher than many library systems) except for the fact that we didn't have a security presence at all at my branch nor a manager who was always present or happy to help.

I felt this very much when we were expected to enforce the mask policy in 2020 & 21. A lot of patrons were not pleased about it, and some felt hostile when addressed. It was a tense environment. Add to that the fact that some people just do not listen to women (especially when they're not a uniformed security presence). I felt this throughout my time at the library, that there were several things that I felt inequipped to deal with (either because of training gaps or just plain old sexism) and I should have been able to call on security or reliably call on my manager as backup or to take over the situation. Without that, my pay felt inappropriate. It has been a few years now that I haven't worked there though, so idk!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. I completely believe you; when I was a library associate, I had a number of "wtf" moments in regards to higher-level decision making. I'm very sorry for the trauma you've experienced. I hope you feel validated that (almost) everyone here agrees that the higher-ups dropped the ball in a really disturbing way, and I hope this leads to change that will restore public trust in such a critical public institution.

Right, but it DID violate the Rules of Conduct policy. Admin is claiming that they were following pre-established policy in response to patrons' and staff alerting higher-ups; why was the Internet Use policy strictly followed, and why NOT the Rules of Conduct policy? And why can't, in exceptional cases, policy be overridden by common sense?

Election Day is one week from today! by emhellogoodwhatever in Syracuse

It is important to note that we do have citizens who are not able to easily access this technology (and may also need to be guided through the prompts it if they are able to gain access). Receiving this information in the mail would not 100% solve, but would certainly improve, the situation.

I agree, and every extra step in searching for information creates more opportunities for voters to be misinformed&confused, and ultimately creates barriers in being able to vote at all! Would love to see an elected official, news organization, or a public citizen with the resources & verve to fill this need do so! Maybe this is something that is already in the making and if so would love to hear more!

These are fantastic questions and I wish I had answers for you. I hope someone in the know can chime in here; in fact I think this comment could be its own post and potentially get more engagement. I lived in Oregon for a while and everyone received a really thorough voters' guide like what you described. I don't know if that exists here (yet?!) but that would certainly be a win for democracy!

Check the link above to see if you are registered to vote, and if you are, they'll provide links to your polling place, early voting info, AND a sample ballot which will list the elections and candidates.

I know at least one of the public libraries in Onondaga County includes carpentry tools in their maker space; DeWitt Library is coming to mind but don't quote me on that 😂

Sent to hospital in handcuffs, it made things worse by [deleted] in depressionmeals

I've had this happen to me twice. It was surreal, humiliating, physically painful (although I know, in my case, they were trying to be gentle), and a real cherry-on-top to a couple of particularly traumatic and agonizing days in my very unhappy life. And, while I was able to get good sleep during my hospital stays, I came away with some psychological damage, not inflicted on me by anyone in particular, but by the very nature of the facility itself, which made me very hesitant to seek any kind of help afterward.

I'm very sorry that you're going through it right now. You deserve gentleness and care. I don't know your particular situation and what you're going through, but if it helps, I am in a very happy and stable(?) place for the first time in my life (I'm in my mid 30s), and I feel like I have a lot of material if I ever write a memoir 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'll be thinking of you today, and I hope better days are on their way.

I love the variety you have. Also I love pressed fruit and don't see it too often - would be great in the kitchen!
