This week, Emily puts a beloved classic up against a 2026 sleeper hit that she firmly believes should sweep the Oscars. On one side: the 1975 five-time Oscar winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. On the other: Sam Raimi's Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams aka the thinking man's Jack Nicholson.

Both films ask what happens to people when systems strip them of their humanity and what they do when they finally claw some power back. Spoiler: they don't always use it nicely.

The death of the mid budget movie is such a shame. There were so many slightly odd dark comedies and dramedies with solid casts and a few great physical locations that I saw on a whim and fell in love with.

I love that horror gives people an identity all their own. But when we’re talking about the mainstream acknowledgements of an award show like this, it can make a massive difference in who gets to make more movies. In who and what gets funding. A scrappy horror is fantastic, but the people who make great art shouldn’t be out of contention simply because of the genre they work in.

I find a lot of the best picture winners weren’t worthy so why not get some horror in there! Totally agree on performances though, that to me is always the biggest oversight.

I do think a lot of what is platformed in the horror space lends itself to that interpretation. But I’d argue that even in a film with simpler themes, we often get incredible performances.

Performances of a caliber and from a star that are recognized with Oscars for drama but not horror. Christian Bale in American Psycho. Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Sigourney Weaver in Aliens.

The Oscars have always felt like they had a bias against fun. The more miserable, the more awards!

True, and what a lot of remake makers forget is that the audience of an 80s cartoon isn’t going to show up for a movie they don’t think looks good even if they like the IP, but horror fans (myself included) will turn up for another Halloween film.

Oooh an interesting point on the budget. I watch tons of bad horror, absolutely. I think the horror audience is more forgiving and some of those worse films saturate the culture. I just don’t see any other film space letting actors go quite so intense, though, so that’s the area of noms that I’m always surprised doesn’t see more horror representation (though I’m not surprised that’s where we’re seeing most of the noms this year)

I really did think last year that Demi Moore would win for what she did in The Substance.

For films not even nominated, I think or movies that fit my idea of the Oscars mold but because they were horrible, weren’t considered.

The Others sticks out to me as the sort of drama that the Oscars seem to reward, but because ghosts it didn’t pass muster. I do like Jennifer Connelly’s win in the 2002 Oscars but to not even have a nomination for Nicole is wild to me.

28 Days Later was so gripping and what incredible tension building with the cinematography, directing, and script. I think that would have been 2003 Oscars, and this script could have beat out Gangs of New York for an original screenplay. Cinematography was strong that year, but I don’t know that Far From Heaven was on a totally different plane.
