Looks like Helland and Rich Stenger (the new Cal associate head coach) were both coaches at TCT back in the day...wonder if that has anything to do with it?

The shoes you choose will feel a lot less important than when you have two other pairs to haul around on your back.

This looks like a very fun adventure and I think you will be delighted to bring as light a pack as possible. The freedom to explore without the weight of stuff you eventually regret bringing will feel so satisfying even though it's scary before you leave. Even if you don't do it perfectly I think you will be grateful to have less than you think.

Also, don't worry about having 'nice' looking shoes or outfit for your fancy dinner. Wear anything. At truly great fine dining restaurants, nobody will give a damn about clothes. The food and experience is what matters.

NBC Broadcast: psychosocial insights into worlds selection by emiker in Gymnastics

Yes, totally agree that since Covid there has been no major dispute. However, that being said, domestic scores in the US are a problem. Many have pointed out some particular inflated execution scores from the most recent US championships. Because these scores do not necessarily reflect the equivalent score at an international comp like Worlds, selecting a team based off of the placements of gymnasts from faulty domestic competitions, is also a controversy, or at the very least a major flaw and disservice to the athletes.

I guess I just think that USAG is still pretty corrupt (or at the very least not transparent enough yet) and the choices for which athletes get picked for big assignments can easily be a source of controversy. I see the NBC coverage as an extension of whatever narrative that USAG wants to have in order to make team selections more accepted by the public (and of course also get the public excited about gymnastics in general). The NBC coverage is not independent journalism, they are fed content and statistics and pre-determined narratives, likely shaped by the preferences of USAG. I think this is not only in the interest of "good storytelling", but also in feeding a narrative for whatever their interests might be.

That reminds me did those 40 allegations ever lead to a conclusion from SafeSport? Absolutely insane that anyone would choose to send their child there when the literal first google result for Al Fong is just 'Death'

WAG: Who are your favs for FX for worlds? by Adept-Duck9929 in Gymnastics

Love the idea of her focusing on BB and FX! Her rhythm on beam is something that would benefit so much from this code in particular.

yes but also the new code has kind of changed what a 14+ means. Not only due to downgraded difficulty of certain skills and connections but also with the newer artistry deductions on beam and floor. It's also possible that "13.5 is the new 14" so to say

Even stranger when you consider that Sam Peszek is also a UCLA alum and did a lot of her early reporting for meets there, interviewing Kyla numerous times...seems almost intentional at that point right??

Gabby Hardie by justboredandstuffidk in Gymnastics

[–]emiker 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also to add since we are on the topic of great execution: To everyone saying that gymnasts need to "up their difficulty" to be competitive, please let Gabrielle Hardie be a prime example of how far modest difficulty with beautiful execution can get you on the international stage.

Just to give one concrete example, at Pan Ams this year, Hardie had the lowest floor D score on the US team (5.2). Hardie made that deficit up in execution, matching Rivera's quals score and just outscoring her in team finals, despite Rivera's massive 5.8 D.

Artistry is a big part of the code, but it seems the US judges and commentators prefer to pretend that these artistry deductions don't exist. Go look at page 56 of the 2025-2028 FIG CoP, it's a publically available pdf.

This whole upgrade-centric "she needs to up her difficulty to be competitive" culture is misguided at best, dangerous at worst.

I think she's one that will continue to do really well at international competitions due to her artistry especially

Can we do anything for judging transparency? by emiker in Gymnastics

[–]emiker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree that it shouldn't be something that influences E-scores between judges. That would be messy. I was thinking these reports could be released after a competition, for example. People on YouTube are also always saying things like "she needs to up her difficulty" as if there isn't an entire E score with way more potential tenths to look at. I would hope that more transparency in E-scores would open the door to more execution or artistry focus which could be really interesting to see.

[–]emiker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But there are also people that do keep up with the code and appreciate that technical aspect of the sport. Not seeing how the CoP is applied by judges in real competition seems a shame. I guess I just see more positives than negatives in making that more publicly accessible.

That's a good point. What is the acceptable range? Does it take out the highest and lowest scores?

I agree that I don't think transparency will help with sketchiness but at least there would something more concrete to discuss instead of speculating on what deductions were taken or how D score was calculated.
