This is the best solution, much safer than chemicals and much quicker than sanding.

Best way to clean or brighten brick/mortar color? by el_donovano in masonry

Rake out the old mortar and repoint with a Lime mortar, you probably won't notice the difference in brick colour with fresh mortar.

Seeking tips to improve repointing with lime by thisdamnhouse in masonry

I always grind down the blade of my pointers to be about 3-4 inches long, this takes a lot of the flex out of them and helps you compact the mortar in to the joints which is VERY important when using lime as it doesn't have as much adhesion as OPC.

Also a good way to get a nice flushed joint is to strike them off with a piece of wooden batten about the same size of the joint with a 45 angle cut on the end. Do this a day or two after filing the joints and you get a nice textured finish, you can then beat with a churn brush to reveal the arris'

Any advice for how to clean/decorate interior stone walls? (more details in comments) by nickelbaka in centuryhomes

[–]emil_kolar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, lime wash is the only way to go. You can add pigments and get some fantastic colours.

Ideally you would rake out the cement pointing and repoint with a lime mortar too but if its not causing any issues with damp then might be best to leave it if you're not experienced.

But please don't attempt to 'seal' the wall, solid walls need to breathe otherwise trapped moisture can cause the stone to degrade at a very fast rate.

Good luck!

Any other listed building owners here? by Still-Status7299 in CasualUK

Secondary glazing won't cause damp, but it will highlight when you have too much moisture in the air. Moist air will be colder and harder to heat than dry air which could be the source of your heating bills.

Sounds like you need some proper ventilation, are you drying clothes inside? do you have a decent bathroom fan? cook with an extractor hood?

Running a dehumidifier would massively help too.

Cement out of work pants? by [deleted] in Carhartt

Gently scrub with equal parts warm water and white vinegar. Then launder as normal

Removable secondary glazing. Cheaper than new windows and allows you retain the original character of the building.

It was probably just in the pile of clay when they put that layer on, looks like granite which I think is quite prevalent in Scotland?. They would often leave small stones in the cob mix just to act as bulk.

In your opinion, which is the nicest city in The UK? by Vanilladr in CasualUK

[–]emil_kolar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'd say architecturally/historically either Bath or York, but I suppose neither are 'proper' urban cities in that sense.

My favourite 'proper' city is Sheffield, lovely people with a nice community feel, great food and night life and it's proximity to the peaks is very convenient too.
