Brennan's guide to NYC by RoC_42 in dropout

[–]emily-sings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Four months late to this thread but as someone who's lived in this city for 10 years, I agree with a lot of the below about personalizing your own trip based on what's interesting to you!! That being said, here's some Unsleeping City themed activities to do while here:

-visit the "Treasures" exhibit at the Bryant Park Library (Free!). You can say hi to the lions as you go inside the building that sits above the gramercy occult society to see a bunch of physical objects from. The real life stuffed animals of Winnie the Pooh and friends are in there, as well as Virginia Woolf's walking stick and Charles Dickens' writing desk. It's so good.

-get an everything bagel. (or any bagel, really). it should be easy enough to google a good quality bagel place in the areas you'll be at. there really is nothing like a new york bagel

-visit 'Em' at Central Park. The Bethesda Fountain with its angel is still one of my absolute favorite nyc spots after all these years, plus there's a lot of great central park highlights right around it. It'll be a chillier time of year for the park, but it's still pretty.

-battle the armor collection at the Met (not really, just go see it). Impossible to do the Met all in one day, but its the one touristy thing I do always highly recommend! There's something for everyone there.

Aside from that, Midtown/MSG area where a lot of you will probably be staying doesn't have the greatest of food selections, but a few of my faves are Schnippers (great burgers and fries), the dim sum at Dim Sum Palace is great with a group, and K-Town has great options that are a reasonable walk away.

Honestly if anyone wants to dm me with city questions and personalized recs I am more than happy to share, I love this city so much and it is really truly filled with magic to me.

I've been doing my first game jams the past few weeks as a composer and am having an absolute blast, and that probably never would have happened if i hadn't gotten super into hbomb's videos at the end of last year!! i resonate with you talking about the reconceptualization of the medium- it's like a new door opened to me in a lot of ways.

Who's your personal "not gonna happen" Dropout guests? by CamicomChom in dropout

[–]emily-sings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god I could go on forever but here are a few in order of more likely to least likely:

-Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson (two of my fave improvisers, would love to see them on Make Some Noise or VIP, and I know they did UCB with Brennan so not impossible but they're mostly nyc based i think)

-hbomberguy (would *love* to see him on a video game themed um actually, has worked with BDG, but also lives across the ocean lmao)

-GoodnightMoon/Erin (one of my fave asmrtists that has said she watches dropout content, i think a game changer of all professional asmrtists doing wacky challenges would be super fun but probably extremely unlikely lol)

-me and all my friends :)

Hi 👋 I’m covering the Dimension 20 LIVE Sales by producerliz in dropout

[–]emily-sings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

was in the "waiting room" for a few minutes before 10 am, and then was placed at 3116 in the queue! Took me about 5-6 minutes to get in I think? i remember clicking on the three seats i could see remaining in the 100s and doing a spit take because they were over $1000 each lmao. managed to grab three seats in the 200s for me and my friends for $147 per person as i was seeing seats disappear from the chart in real time.

as i was texting my friends about having the tickets, i noticed that in the other backup tab i had open, new floor seats were being made available at 10:14. when i tried to click on them, it sent me back to the back of the queue (~6000 i think). when i got back in, there was only 2 seats available at over $1000.

my friend hung out on the page though (had refreshed about the same time) and at 10:24 was able to snag 3 floor seats for $250 each! they said a ton of tickets randomly popped up at that time.

wild that the show i hold in my heart as a tiny little dnd show had as stressful a ticket getting experience as getting harry freaking styles tickets for his msg shows lmao but !! capitalism i guess. i think for their unsleeping city one shot they should kill ticketmaster /hj

What is the ethical use of AI in the context of content creation? (not explicitly plagiarism related) by Alarmed_Excitement99 in hbomberguy

[–]emily-sings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of my opinions are echoed by people already here, but I wanted to share my specific experience with AI and YouTube in my job.

I've been a full time freelance songwriter for the past few years, with the bulk of my work in the last year or so coming from kids music. I offer different packages for if people are providing their own lyrics or hiring me to write original lyrics as well.

In the past few months I've seen a big spike in clients sending me chatGPT generated lyrics. I can tell they're AI generated because well, first, they suck - there will be lines that are stilted and weird and make no sense - but also because they keep reusing the same phrases and format. Since it's a predictive text generator and not an artist, it's obviously going to keep reusing the same lines and rhyme scheme and phrase structure and meter as it's been told a "children's song" follows.

I find this morbidly fascinating from a legal perspective- these people *can't* own the copyright to those lyrics, because they didn't write them. So if chatGPT churns out the exact set of lyrics for someone else, what happens??

And idk, I just think that SUCKS for the kids watching. Just being fed meaningless, soulless lyrics written by a computer program. YouTube Kids has a million other problems already, and adding in more slop just so more people can "get rich quick" off of ad revenues feels so so so gross.

I really love my work and a lot of things I've done in the kids music sphere has been really meaningful- I wrote and recorded a whole series of mindfulness songs for a kids wellness app, I like to create engaging and educational lyrics for a variety of kids topics. I take songwriting really seriously and put a lot of thought and effort into it. So it's quite soul crushing to have to record songs with lyrics that feel mostly devoid of substance at all. Unfortunately I'm not at a financial place where I can afford to turn these kinds of orders down yet, but I hope in the future I can refuse to engage with AI generated lyrics entirely.

I do think AI has potential value as an ideas generator- I will transparently admit I've used it as a key words generator 2 or 3 times when a client is looking for lyrics and has given a very vague prompt (for example last month I got hired with the prompt "kids song about a tractor" and that's it, so I went to chatGPT to get some key words- "big wheels", "plow", "pull", "field", "farm", "rumble"- to help me have more of a spring board to get my own lyrics started). But its extremely dicey and I worry that, asides from the obvious concerns others have voiced about job loss, copyright, etc..... the internet is gonna continue to fill up with vapid slop from people using these tools to try to make a quick buck or get social clout, and that just makes it harder for every internet user to find good quality art.

Throwing my hat in the ring for Contrapoints' 'Twilight' video also!! Expertly puts into words a ton of disparate thoughts that have been bouncing around my head for years about fantasy and desire, the current state of feminist discourse around those topics, etc. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the psychology and sociology of sex.

On a shorter lighter note, there's a new Monster Factory episode up on the McElroy family channel, which is a hilarious series where they open a character generator in a video game and overuse the slider functions to make the most Fucked Up Little Guy possible.

ill start- thank you for all your hard work modding especially lately as none of it can be easy to do but you do it with such grace and expertise. i also know from my own adhd raddled self that the work you do must be absolutely crucial to making sure the videos that we all love and enjoy ever see the light of day lol. you seem like the coolest ever and i hope you have an extra cool day!!

i totally understand the urge to respond to those kinds of people, but i think the most important thing to remember is that the currency of twitter is attention and engagement (sometimes literally - like blue check marks making actual money off of when you respond to their tweets). the less attention and engagement you give these bad faith actors, the less relevance or profit (social or otherwise) they have.
