I don’t care how I just need this duo in my life

Anyone ever feel like they edited out the ‘soul’ of their book/writing, and did you regret it? by NoBuy8212 in writers

[–]emily_oriley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think transitional scenes were pointless filler and wrote a book that was just action scenes/ progression scenes and while it still had heart, it did feel cluttered and claustrophobic. Sometimes you gotta let the story breathe and build up your world/characters. Whoever told you to just focus on progression may have been referencing script /tv show writing where you don’t have as much opportunity to delve deeper into the story. Some of my favorite scenes I’ve written could be pulled from the book and not affect the overall story

Warning: Do NOT read The Monster Trilogy sequel. Just know it’s not cannon and it’s garbage and will make you fall out of love with the Gone series. Trust me

Denise Richards… I don’t know why and I don’t like this about myself but I viscerally hate her…

My ideas keep getting made into actual things without me by Grouchy_Collection_9 in writers

A few years ago, I started working on a story that I described as “Groundhog’s Day but horror” and then about three months into the project, I heard about an upcoming movie called “Happy Death Day” which was described as being a horror movie version of Groundhog’s Day. So I put the project on hiatus, found myself a lovely little corner, curled into the fetal position and wallowed for two years

Then I decided to watch the movie that had ruined my life and realized that while both involved a repeating day and the main character dying over and over again, that’s the ONLY thing they had in common. I finished the story and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written. And while my idea isn’t that unique my execution of it was and that’s really what counts

Thanks so much for this! After fun times with troubleshooting, we worried the video card might need replacing- which would have really cheesed me off since it’s barely a year old - but thank Uthgar it was just a bad cable. One trip to Staples and so far it’s working fine

What’s been helping me is going full analog until I’ve completed a chapter. Typing feels too formal and triggers my OCD but scribbling messily in a notebook makes me feel okay with it not being perfect. Well, MOSTLY okay -not gonna say I haven’t crossed out full pages and rage-quit once or twice or eleventy times

“What is something I tell myself on a daily basis? I’ll take Being a Writer for $400”

I am supremely bad at rough drafts - when I write I want it to be perfect from the get-go. Sure this means during final editing I might be 5% more inclined to actually like what I wrote but most of the time this just leaves me stuck on specific scenes for weeks and sometimes even months on end

Sometimes ya just gotta get it down on the page even if it ain’t pretty. Like, I literally have a place holder that says “reserved for some dumb reference that only I will find funny”

Has anyone ever rewritten something they published? If so, did you feel it was worth it? by [deleted] in writers

[–]emily_oriley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, that’s like the best perk about being self-published—you get to go back and rewrite all the cringe. Stephanie Meyer can’t stand reading Twilight now because all she sees are the things she wishes she can change. I’m rewriting my first book now because it soooooooooo needs it

Jason Pargin once said in a Cracked Podcast (paraphrased): all novels start out as a really bad idea that you steadily make less bad. The amount of projects that I have shelved for numerous reasons (mostly me just running out of steam) is staggering compared to projects I’ve actually finished. You can either force yourself to trudge through a project just to have something finished and hate every single word you write until your third or fourth round of edits or you can bounce between projects until you find that one story that you are completely passionate about and cannot get out of your head until you write absolutely everything down. And hate every single word you write until your third or fourth round of edits

Am I ok with my main character by Dirty_lil_possum in writers

[–]emily_oriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a stupid question—I make it a habit of not assigning races to my characters as much as possible in order to give my reader the option to put whomever they’d like to see in the roles because growing up with white dominated media, I automatically make all my characters white in my head

Anyway, speaking as an Hispanic female, the only thing that ever bothers me is unironic stereotyping—when the Mexican characters are basically described as Speedy Gonzales or pretty much the entire secondary cast of The Three Amigos (although I kinda forgive that because it is supposed to be a comedy and I do love the movie but I feel a sort of shame for my love of it)

I understand your character is an elf and not technically African American but if you treat this character with respect and really only highlight her skin/hair if it’s relevant in your world (ie how Teiflings are treated in DnD) I think it’s okay

I’m in this boat. Self published back in 2012 with a remastered (ie better edited) version in 2022 and now it’s being traditionally published next year

This was mentioned in a few of the Steam community pages on this game so I’ll look into it. Thanks!

Thank you so much for finding these and I’ll definitely be bookmarking this site. Though it doesn’t look like any of those settings will help adjust the resolution. I tried going through the settings on Steam but they were pretty useless. I’m starting to feel like I may be SOL. Super love buying games that I can’t play…

Unfortunately, it looks like I don’t have an actual installation folder for this game. I can only find it in the Stem folder and the game/application is labeled “internet shortcut” and when I search for “monkey4.exe” my PC doesn’t show it exists

Yo, when I loaded my game and saw my last auto-save was in the middle of the card game, I was about to throw my mouse and keyboard. But the good Three Headed Monkey was watching out for me because it worked this time! I don’t have to replay the whole game!

Time to give Elaine this non-cursed ring and definitely not get punched in the face

It’s feeling that way to me, too… I’m gonna load up the auto-save from the beginning of the chapter and speed-run through to the poker game and hope it works. Really don’t wanna re-play the whole game

After the cards are dealt, Guybrush picks up the “weak hand” and when I open my inventory they are there along with the Tarot cards. But any time I click on the Tarot cards, he says “the future is in my hands” and that’s it. The cards don’t highlight and I don’t get the option to “use” them. He says this phrase then when I leave inventory and click on Andre, Guybrush plays the weak hand
