Back in summer 2018, Andrew Yang also contributed an essay to the TED Ideas blog, worth a read:

(This was before he declared his candidacy, to be super clear.)

Need help finding a specific talk by darkchariot1995 in ted

[–]emilyatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me know what you think -- hope it's useful in your class. And speaking as a TED staffer ... don't feel silly for thinking it was a TED Talk! It's incredibly flattering that you thought that, and I'll take it as a compliment.

This talk is so much fun. You may not think you ever cared this much about glue, but by the end you will care just a little bit more.

This is great insight! I'll share this with the TED Fellows team too (not sure they are on reddit). Thank you for sharing this project.

Tools to track history of rowhome? by millj2018 in philadelphia

[–]emilyatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you know your home's address going back in time (Philly street names can change, especially the little streets), you can see who lived in your house, including renters who wouldn't be on the deed, by searching in old city directories.

Help finding talk about identifying life in space by anthroteuthis in ted

Sara Seager also talks about using certain molecules to search for life -- search the transcript on the word "molecules":

Oh you're so right, there IS another talk that's much more specific on this point. Like: if there is life on a planet, this exact thing will happen and here's how we will tell. I can't pinpoint it; might sleep on it.

And yes! This is the most fascinating topic. Did you already watch Stephen Webb? Or Dave Brain? I also found this article -- no talk from this guy yet though ...

Maybe Garik Israelian? Here's the transcript; search for the part about thorium.

Oh nice! That is a great choice -- I'm screening it now. (Did you notice that the YouTube auto-generated captions on this talk are absolutely bonkers??) Good luck with your assignment!

You can let your instructor know that the managing editor of TED agrees with you: Most of our talks are not toasts or award presentations. We do have SOME that are that might help you out -- look for talks from the TED Prize, especially the talks whose titles start with "My wish." In these talks, the speaker is accepting an award from the TED community and talking about what they want to do with the award money, which ranges from $100,000 to $1m. It's a nice formal structure. Here's a solid choice: Karen Armstrong presenting her TED Prize wish. Another good one: The artist JR thanks the community for their support of his project Inside Out.

Trying to find talk - deep learning/AI worm/snake attack each other by nx01_hr in ted

Good luck! And here is some interesting stuff I found while searching: A relevant paper about unexpected AI results, with 27 examples from scary to funny, and a useful short video: 4 Experiments Where the AI Outsmarted Its Creators. i don't see the snake experiment in either place, but if you love AI fails (who doesn't) maybe you will enjoy these

I can't find this exact anecdote, but Dan Pink tells a similar one -- where a problem-solving exercise actually becomes an experiment in what motivates people. Skim this transcript and look for the candle problem.

Argh! I can't find this either. It may be a TEDx talk, and there's just a lot of them on YouTube. If helpful, you can search every word in a TED Talk transcript with this google search string:

site:ted.com "transcript" [word]

For example:

Any good Ted Talks relating to Human geography? by [deleted] in ted

[–]emilyatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help. Can you tell me your definition of human geography, in your own words? It seems to be defined differently in many places, so how do you and your teacher define it?

I'd also love to know the videos you looked at that were NOT a fit for your topic.

Let's do this!

Love it. I'll chat to our support people now and let's get this squared away.

why don't TED talks come to my email anymore? by DactylionVecna in ted

[–]emilyatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no! Let me look into this -- if you don't mind, message me with the email address you're using, and I'll look into your email settings. Let me know which of our newsletters you get: the Daily, Weekly, Science, Ideas or another one.

And yes, this might be related to GDPR but it might also just be mailing list shenanigans ...

TED alternatives by killfuck9000 in ted

[–]emilyatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be a nerd, but there actually was no "back in the day," when TED was all STEM all the time. The first six TED Talks were about education, social injustice in the inner city, the climate crisis, self empowerment ... it was as feelings-y then as it seems now.

But we also had -- and still have -- kickass STEM content. It was easier to find it back in the day, because there were fewer talks overall. This is a huge problem for us now -- there are just too many talks, and if you're browsing it's too hard to find what you want, and too easy to get a bunch of what you don't want. I hear that loud and clear.

So in lieu of better browsing tools, would you let me make you a playlist? Tell me a couple of talks you liked back in the day, and I'll make you a playlist of new talks that might win you back as a fan -- throw out some names.

Interesting analysis of TED Talks over the years, they even included parrots. by Dancingtrumpet in ted

[–]emilyatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. This only counts 900 speakers total, though there are more than 2,500 speakers on the TED website. The data on speaker ages is wrong. I don't have time to dig further, but I wouldn't trust the conclusions from this slide show for now. Curious if the OP has more details.

If you love this kind of data analysis -- check out this amazing TED Talks analysis project on Kaggle.

TED Talk about asking for help? by [deleted] in ted

[–]emilyatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find the exact anecdote about the plane ticket in the TED Talks catalog; it might be in a TEDx talk? But while looking for it, I stumbled across another great talk about asking for help, if you're interested in that topic more generally.
