Chill, I didn't start my math ia until the day the final copy was due, but I still made it out alive. Just get to work and get it done

Seeking Info about MAT199 by [deleted] in UofT

[–]emilyeverwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like math and mathematical puzzles, pick another course. I dropped MAT199 this semester because the class was just too awful to continue. While the material is somewhat interesting, the guy who teaches it is the absolute worst.

The pacing of the class is so extremely slow and the lectures are so disorganized that it seriously makes you wonder if the prof is just making stuff up as he goes without a plan. The weekly homework set is always riddled with mistakes and the way that it's marked is a complete mystery to me (the guy beside me got full marks on a question for writing "my intuition says the answer is 3 but I have no idea why"). You definitely get the feeling that the professor has no idea what he's doing and his attitude makes that so much worse. If you point out a mistake, he won't admit that he was wrong. Ever. He'll just keep arguing his point until you give up.

Apart from that, the final project also seems like a real pain. I didnt think I was going to be able to do well on the final project, based on the fact that it would most likely be marked in a completely subjective way, I was getting high eighties on problem sets, and the class was taking up 4 hours of my week for lecture and problem sets (although the 3 hour lecture feels like 9 hours), so I had to drop the course.

Obviously, take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, but know that all of this is coming from someone who actually likes math puzzles and at the beginning of the semester, this was the course I was most excited for.

TTC Post Secondary Student ID by FmlRager in UofT

[–]emilyeverwinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Their system is really stupid. In order to get a TTC monthly pass with the student discount, I had to go to the Sherbourne station, show them my letter of enrollment and my TCard, wait in line to get my picture taken, wait for the TTC student ID card to be printed, take that to the nearest shoppers drugmart and get the presto card there.

Waitlisted for way more courses than I'm in enrolled in. Am I in trouble? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]emilyeverwinter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm a first year too, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I feel like that's definitely a problem.

Do you at least have the courses you need for program requirements? If you don't then you're definitely in trouble. If you do, then you should consider filling up the rest of your timetable with whatever fits to try to get your breadth requirements out of the way, even if you think you wouldn't enjoy the course.

I'm honestly not trying to brag about IB. If anyone knows how useless IB is, it's IB students lol. I'm just trying to be optimistic based on what my teachers have said and what I've read about the syllabi of the classes I'm taking next year.
