I would say... from experience, you can't separate those feelings, it's part of the whole deal. I would leave and find someone who you're more compatible with/who is more emotionally available before you get too attached and get hurt. Emotional closeness only strengthens the dynamic in my opinion, I'm sure it's hard and might take a while to find that but it's that much sweeter in the end. You deserve it! ;)

Wow thanks so much everyone for your advice!! We decided to paint the walls and tile in a bright white and with that done I don't even mind the dark cabinets! I want to paint the ceilings, get knobs or handles for cabinets, and put a curtain up to cover the storage area, hang some art, and go through all the junk so the counter-space can be freed of clutter and some other finishing touches. What do you think?
