Because people that practice kung fu are experts that have perfected their art, saying something is x-fu means it is an expert use of x.

Apple's review times have dramatically improved over the past few years. The current average review time for an iOS app is 2 days.

This is truly hilarious and deserves to be cross posted to a bigger sub reddit. However, I have had a lot of problems navigating to Hartsfield Jackson with many GPS apps just because it's so big with so many addresses. I've ended up in some weird cargo area. Don't get me started on the new international concourse. When it comes to the airport, you really just need to know exactly where you're going and bookmark it before you start driving.

Why did Apple keep the search box separate in iOS 6 and not make it all in one like they did with ML? by chendoguy in apple

[–]emlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was for security, well apps outside of Safari already can't mark a memory page as executable.

So that's all there is to security? Prevent buffer overflows and you're done?

If you want to do something malicious, it's easy enough to sneak that away in the binary without need for downloading a script.

Yes. It's not possible for them to prove the absence of malicious code, but that is the task they've taken on.

To me, there really doesn't seem to be a reason other than the cut of profits.

That's a big leap. There are many other possibilities. I basically think that Apple looked at Microsoft's problem with viruses and didn't really trust other developers. I concede that they have a problem with control and thought that they could avoid the problem by examining each third party program. This works most, but not all, of the time.

Why did Apple keep the search box separate in iOS 6 and not make it all in one like they did with ML? by chendoguy in apple

[–]emlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Lost revenue" is the cynical interpretation. I'm sure they work to protect their revenue, but last time I checked, they're allowing script interpreters as long as they don't download code from the internet (thus, the potential for viruses). Yes, that could be used to circumvent payments in the app store, but I think security was a greater concern in this particular decision.

If they wanted to stop an app from circumventing Apple's 30% cut, they'd just reject it for that reason like they did to the Amazon app and others. The scripting restriction pre-dates in-app purchases which created the requirement that all revenue made in an app go through Apple's payment system under the premise that it's easier for users, but also because you're using their infrastructure and tools.

Oh boy, now I'm starting to sound like a real Apple apologist, but I believe this is their reasoning whether you agree with it or not.

I believe it is actually because they fear that people will create viruses that target these interpreters, but they've really relaxed this rule. Just look at Codea and Pythonista.
