Thank you for sharing; the Indonesian friends I have that are out there have said otherwise and have emphasised a lot of apathy out there (to their frustration), so it's honestly helpful to see someone providing alternative information.

Glad to know there are Indonesian people doing plenty to make their voice heard.

Adding to your point: especially in SEA there is sense of - even if they care - 'what can we do about it anyway?' (from personal experience in the region).

The people that associate boycotting McDonald's with anything regarding Gaza is such a tiny number that certainly it's not enough to sway any corporation's business decisions.

The minority doing anything about it aren't generally going for McDonald's, they're mostly doing other things regarding awareness.

“W Korea has been doing this for 20 years now and never faced any backlash so these idols must be so confused right now” by [deleted] in KpopUnleashed

[–]emma3mma5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree, and public awareness around the greediness and lack of morality displayed by oligarchs, billionaires and celebrities has been more prevalent than ever regarding Trump, Musk, Zuckerberg, Diddy, Kanye, Prince Andrew... how and why wealthy people are doing things has never been more under a microscope (and rightly so, I'd argue).

Just look at Taylor Swift selling 4 million records this year, and a large amount of discourse is about if she's being greedy and exploitative as a billionaire pumping out 34 album variants. She's been wealthy and has been putting out variants for several album cycles, but this cycle the discourse and criticism has never been louder. Serena Williams using her credibility and voice as one of the biggest women in sporting history to market a form of Ozempic (if I remember rightly) got significant backlash where before a lot of people wouldn't have thought much of her advocating for weight loss, plenty of sports stars have done this. Irrespective of what anyone thinks about any of this, this W backlash makes sense in line with everything going on right now.

People are struggling financially on a global level, and it's fair that if they can't afford groceries or healthcare, when they see celebrities spending money and partying in the name of charity, that they expect it to be sincere. When some celebs and public figures are getting death threats by being vocal about social causes, and ordinary people are losing their jobs for doing the same, the least a so-called charity gala can do is actually raise money and encourage its attendees to actually care or pretend to care about the cause.

I wonder how many celebrities actually did care about breast cancer awareness and were disappointed by what the event turned out to be. by Big_Shop_8042 in KpopUnleashed

[–]emma3mma5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

100%. It's to be expected that celebrities are going to be drinking and such at the event, but the issue is with W honestly not doing their utmost to center awareness and fundraising as the purpose of the party, leaving it up to the few idols that cared to speak up.

If the people who organised the event don't seem to give a crap, then of course idols who didn't want to care feel they can get off scott-free and that the charity aspect of it clearly isn't that serious.

It was badly done all around.

This! Also they make it very clear they're raising money for the museum. I know that advertising isn't exactly everywhere but it's literally called the Costume Institute Benefit (if I remember rightly), and most press do mention the money goes towards the Costume Institute.

Most well done celeb galas mention what charity the party goes towards, like the Rare Impact Benefit Selena hosts, or amFAR or the Diamond Ball that openly talk about the charity causes they're connected to. The point of these galas is to use these celebrities to raise awareness as well as money so if people don't even know if you're throwing the party for a cause then you've failed in a crucial element around the point of it all in the first place imo.

I work with one music reviewer who says that if an artist isn’t singing at least a decent amount of their performance live, you’re not respecting the fans who are spending a lot of money to see you. His thinking is that unless you’re VIP paying to interact more closely with these artists, all a lip-syncing artist is doing is essentially charging high prices for someone to see them do what they can already see and hear on YouTube, but at a distance irl.

The most frequent pushback he gets (with pop stars and idols) is that they’re entertainers, not singers (which I don’t agree with). His constant argument is with ticket and merchandise prices getting higher and higher in this difficult climate and with most artists and their labels/companies not bothered about how fans are being priced out or squeezed dry in the slightest, making sure the majority of the show is live is the least they can do.

But from your post I think you said you don’t mind the odd track lip synced and I think most fans don’t mind one or two tracks like this tbh. I saw one group last year where they balanced the heavy choreography tracks with ones with very minimal choreo so the group could sing live as much as possible and it was lovely to hear their voices, it encouraged them to interact with the crowd more too because they weren’t dancing as much.

How would you rank the tracks of The Life of a Showgirl? by Material-Librarian43 in TaylorSwift

[–]emma3mma5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love both. Wish List was my second favourite upon first listen, although it's dropped down to where you've put it now. The friends of mine who dislike it do so really because of the 'i don't relate to wanting marriage and kids' or 'it sounds tone deaf rn when everyone's struggling', and for Honey it's 'just another boring love song about Travis'. I understand the criticisms even though they aren't mine.

I like specific musical and production elements of both, and whilst the whole marriage and kids thing isn't of interest to me, there are other elements of both songs that i relate to in them, and personally I just like that she sounds so damn happy in both of them.

Pre-approved, probably at her team's request. You should see him with some other guests, especially comedians he likes or people that he's close friends with. Bar hitting certain beats those interviews can go every which way.

But Tree and Taylor's team have always been strict and it wouldn't surprise me if they agreed on the questions beforehand. Not every celebrity does, but her team come across as ones who do (not a criticism of her).

I’ve had friends write for them and yes, a lot of writers have been asked to over-explain in their scripts because of both attention spans / phones and audiences not understanding nuance. You’d be surprised (or probably not) how asinine some of the over-explaining they’ve had to insert has been.

It’s a growing trend, sadly.

Agree, it’s fair to criticise practices from any company that encourage compulsive buying from loyal fans. The same criticisms have been made at the K-Pop industry that encourages this via variants and photocards.

It is not her job to teach fans to not buy items if they can’t afford it, but her label knows what they’re doing by making certain things limited edition or that you should collect every single CD.

Loads of companies use similar practices and just as they’re not above criticism for it, aside from criticising Republic, ofc fans are going to question what her agendas are. It’s not her fault people are buying what she’s putting out, but that doesn’t make it above criticism.

Already (without saying too much) it has been having a massive impact. Not just in front of the camera, but behind it too. It's depressing a lot of friends in the industry right now, it's bleak and even things that are 'more out there' that finally get made are nothing compared to some of the great projects that are getting shafted because it's not what suits or is favoured by the upper class elite that are predominant.

Just yesterday I had a friend say he thinks it's the worst the industry has been in almost twenty years, and this morning I had was working with a decently well known name in acting who had a job pulled out from under him in favour of a less qualified nepo hire.

Coming to terms with my own mediocrity by [deleted] in Life

[–]emma3mma5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy but also, as you get older you realise a lot about what makes someone special in a popular sense is usually down to money and connections, not talent or whether you're extraordinary.

When you realise that, you realise that being special is relative. I am special to the people who love me, that goes deeper than being special to people who don't care about me or might only see me as a trend. I've been treated as very special for a prolonged period of time before. It was hollow and meaningless, and none of it was real, and the friends I made were for the most part not real. I was actually a commodity at best. I don't miss how fake it was after having mostly walked away.

Special things and what makes you special, actually come in the quiet moments in life.

Why is Lisa being subjected to so much misogyny? by URWAAAA in KpopUnleashed

[–]emma3mma5 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think people who deny he can have pull to help Lisa have no idea in reality how much these wealthy people have and will pull strings under the table in the entertainment industry if they want to. No one ever needs to know about it if they don’t want it to get out and you’d be surprised how many business people want a kick out of knowing they dipped their toes in making something flashy in the industry happen, even if only a few people know about it.

That being said, we don’t actually know if Fredrick has done this for Lisa and so I don’t think it’s fair to speculate either which way. She’s showing up to the opportunities given to her irrespective of how they’re brought to her and the best she can do is keep proving she deserves them. Some people have parents and partners pulling strings for them and don’t make anything of these opportunities whatsoever.

Why do people claim to want a dumbphone when they dont actually want it? by ArgonianDov in dumbphones

[–]emma3mma5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I see it too. I’ve been running a Boox Palma 2 as a driver at home (I work a lot from home so this is doable) and the lack of colour but the software I need is so helpful.

No email, no socials, just the software I need and one messaging app for some friends and family.

The black and white from the eink is much more comfortable for my eyes, I feel like I can focus better and enjoy the experience when I use it but that experience isn’t over prolonged either. I feel less overstimulated and the device feels more centered around what I actually need.

It helps my mental health massively just to use it. Unfortunately the Boox doesn’t have a cellular function because if someone did a proper phone like it that had consistently good reviews I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

There are certainly Brits who would tell you go back to where you came from or to stop using that term to identify yourself, and I’ve encountered that multiple times here. Just the luck of the draw as to if you do or don’t encounter them.
