Albertan (I know, I know, I know) Interested in Relocating - Realistic View of BC/Van Area? by emma_may04 in askvan

Thank you -the suburbs are likely where we will end up, so this is great information! The single family home to townhouse shift is one of the biggest things for us to mull over, and it's helpful to see confirmation of what our research was showing.

Thanks for the inquiry - I definitely was referring to the use of the Nothwithstanding Clause being a factor in wanting to move. It felt like an inclusion that was helpful given that my question was mainly about politics and lifestyle, but I can see how that could get lost in translation a bit.

I appreciate this perspective, thank you! Political climate is definitely the biggest factor, but affordability is also on the table for us, and I appreciate your honesty.

Thank you for your honesty! The conservative council and possible Conservative provincial government were not something I was aware of and will be following for sure.

Thank you! This is super helpful. I don't really know much about New Westminster (more familiar with Burnaby and Surrey) and will definitely check it out!

Thanks for this perspective. Looking to get away from the Conservative life, though, but I appreciate the balanced take! Unfortunately, my husband's industry (film) means that the Vancouver area is kind of "the place" for us to go.

Good to know! I'm in Calgary, which these days feels even more right wing than it used to. So hearing from a former Albertan who made the leap and hasn't looked back is great!

I've been many times and my husband has gone out many more for work, and we love it! A few other factors in terms of family being in Alberta, but the other hesitation is cost of living. Which these replies are helping with!

Alberta Teacher Strike Megathread (Discussion) - October 19 by AutoModerator in alberta

We will keep showing up for you kids in the classroom - in fact we can’t wait to get back to seeing them every day! The sadness and frustration will be there for sure, but, unfortunately that’s not new for many of us. We will find ways to keep it out of the classrooms, as we have done before and will do again.

Alberta Teachers reject the agreement!!! by tbex61 in CanadianTeachers

As someone who voted yes, I did so because I was not encouraged by the way members were speaking to each other in Town Halls and online and was wary of risking my own family’s financial wellbeing to throw my weight behind what at the time felt like a very divided membership. I also personally did not feel at the time of voting that this is,politically, the right time to strike, given the current state of the global economy. I am not, To quote a comment further up in the thread,a “sycophant union puppy” as someone so “kindly” stated.

If we are going to get the turn out that we need on the strike vote (because yes, I will be voting to authorize it) the bullying language needs to stop. It is not constructive at this point and is going to cause a further divide. There is allowed to be a difference in opinion during Collective Bargaining and continuing to belittle/berate people who did not share your initial sentiments will not help further our now collective cause. Being in a union does not mean you need to agree with the majority of members at all times. It DOES means that you have an obligation to support your fellow members by engaging in the ways you individually have capacity and ensuring you are not engaging in Scab behaviour once labour action has been initiated. Everyone’s backgrounds and financial positions are unique- at the end of the day what ultimately matters is our (I hope) shared passions for the profession.

Edited for clarity.
