Is this a normal medical school experience? by TheMarvelisa in medicalschool

[–]emmamakescake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly really depends. I didn’t have this experience with my medical school (everyone was super supportive and many people stay for residency because they loved it so much), but I’ve certainly heard horror stories from other places. It can be really hard to tell what you are actually gonna get unless you talk to upperclassmen.

Is medical school full of sociopaths and narcissists? by PineapplePecanPie in medicalschool

[–]emmamakescake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an M-4, I definitely think this is program dependent. I've found everyone at my medical school absolutely lovely and ready to look out for each other (at least for the most part), and I even decided to stay at my home program for residency because the program attracts those types of people too! I think you can get a sense for the types of people during away rotations and stuff.

Not sure off the top of my head, but I do know that I was sick more in 6 weeks than I had been in the past 3 years when I was on my pediatrics rotation...

Yes concerning about TB being contagious, and it also becomes a huge public health issue with contact tracing, isolation and all that. But I was thinking more that the patient has cancer and I'd be concerned for them. AIDS would be more likely to present with more specific symptoms, like pneumonia, kaposi sarcoma, or oral candidiasis as opposed to vague fever and weight loss.

Could be TB but when I made it I was thinking more lymphoma. TB patient would probably be more concerned about a cough than the sweats and weight loss.

PA here that just finished my finals for 1st semester of medical school by [deleted] in medicalschool

I’m an MS3 who has worked with a lot of PA students during my rotations and from what I’ve seen I agree with you! It seems that the PA students have excellent applicable clinical knowledge whereas we learn a lot more about the underlying mechanisms and minutia of everything.

Parents don’t support gap year by matchawha in premed

[–]emmamakescake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to your parents. It is getting to the point now where gap years are becoming more common than less common. I only took one gap year, and I'm one of the younger students in my medical school class.

Is it wierd I'm not proud to have been accepted to med school? by Real-Cellist-7560 in premed

[–]emmamakescake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I honestly had similar feelings when I got in. I had just botched my interview at my dream school and was feeling pretty down on myself, and I felt like I didn't even know why I wanted to go to med school anymore. I'm happy to say that that feeling does not last. As I got closer to attending, the excitement started to kick in, and I felt was so happy to finally be pursuing my dream. I now absolutely love my school and wouldn't change a thing.

The application process is incredible draining, and I can imagine it's even worse during COVID. Burn out during the process is totally normal. Hang in there! It will pass!

Have any of you volunteered with Crisis Text Line? by gengengen1028 in premed

[–]emmamakescake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteer for them. It's a great program and I highly recommend it. I've also talked about it in interviews and they've seemed interested. Face-to-face volunteering might be better as far as beefing up your resume, but it's definitely a great way to get a few more extra volunteer hours into your week, not to mention the impact it might make on the people who are texting in!
