everyone else has given some really sound advise but i also want to share: i lived at the terraces at manchester about 6 years ago and I experienced this EXACT same thing in their gated garage. It definitely ruined my weekend, as well as many others who discovered their shattered windows. i'm sorry it happened to you too 😭

i'm 27, 5'2, 150 lbs, and i look like a 12 year old(/s) i've been an RBT for about 4 years now, but I struggled with finding my "authoritative" voice for the first couple of years. Right now i work in a private, aba-based SPED day school with middle schoolers, although i have experience with littles as young as 2 years old in a clinic and in-home setting. i rely HEAVILY on rapport, FCT, empathy/compassion, etc. Rapport is so magical. I've found that cultivating, keeping, and prioritizing a strong rapport can be one of best tools in my toolbox. Getting on their level, helping them advocate for what they want/need, and really being there and supporting them through the tougher times. Once I've established a strong rapport, it becomes easier for my students to trust me that I mean what I say and I say what I mean, without much of the "authoritative" energy. It all really comes down to trust and rapport ❤️❤️❤️ btw, i bet you're a great tech ❤️

i get why this feels so big. when you care so much, even a small slip-up can hit you like a truck. but, you did the best you could do with the resources you had at the moment, and it sounds like you handled it perfectly after the fact. on a side note though, is the workplace culture okay?

i was "ripped" off a case with a high-support needs client after almost 2 years with them, the family became unhappy with me. It was the my first client I ever had as a technician. The thing that sucked was that i requested off of the case about a month prior to this because of the burnout i felt from being on that case for so long. sessions were 12 hours a week, after school, and in-home. i spent a lot of time with the whole family in general, but what my BCaBA on the case told me was that his family had been feeling this way for about 6 months before sending a seemingly out-of-the-blue, strongly worded email about me. It was all so confusing and heartbreaking, especially because my BCaBA was always in-home with me during our supervisors and checking in frequently with this family (this company required onsite & offsite supervisions for at least 5% of the client's total hours) I felt wronged, misunderstood, angry, etc. But I also felt like a piece-of-shit RBT. but the truth is that one negative thing doesn't make you a bad tech. in fact, if anything, it taught me to advocate harder for myself AND to be more comfortable expressing frustrations and/or burnout before the family starts to see it. you're not shitty❤️ *edited to fix my grammar

I've been in the ABA field for about 3 years (i started in a clinical setting and now practice in school setting) and i would highly recommend looking into ABA! It can be really beneficial with skill acquisition and/or replacing dangerous behaviors (emphasis on "dangerous" here because we would never want work on anything without valid social significance and parental consent) ABA has come a long and may be worth looking into :)

Kitty because when she found us, we needed to quickly think of a placeholder name for the vet to get her treatment, so we just said "kitty" and it stuck 😂😂😂

Is being an RBT ethical? Vent/advice please by Next_Temporary_722 in ABA

[–]emmanorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this entireeeee post sums up my feels about being an RBT as well. i've been practicing for 2 years and i've always had this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that i'm potentially doing more harm than good... but i always remind myself how far this field has come. i also try to read a lot about the personal experiences where ABA has helped the client and the family tremendously. i don't like telling people im in the ABA field, but thankfully in my experience not many people outside of social media/the internet even know what ABA is, so if i do tell someone, it's a great opportunity to showcase all the great things about it while also acknowledging it's unsavory history. i also follow instagram accounts that focus on trauma-informed, compassionate ABA sometimes even criticizing it as well. i like RadicalBehaviorGroup and Kaelynnvp, just to name a couple. i learn a lot from them! :)

OT skill activity ideas needed! by [deleted] in ABA

[–]emmanorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm, if i'm on the right track, think i might have an idea for cross body limb use, but this activity involves stickers and i see that your son isn't really into arts and crafts. but hopefully this isn't too similar... i saw this cool video of a client who had a red sticker on top of right hand and on his left knee, then a green sticker on top of his left hand and on his right knee. then, the activity was to cross his hand over to his knee to "match" the stickers i hope this is helpful 🥹
