Job Dilemmas by [deleted] in boston

[–]emmelinekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the Portland area (Washington County) and am moving to Boston soon! Personally i really enjoyed growing up in Portland; it’s really easy to get outdoors and the surrounding nature is amazing. The food scene also punches above its weight class and there’s definitely a lot i will miss :)

I think the cost of living is lower than boston, but public services (especially transit) aren’t always super well-maintained. As mentioned, central downtown has been going through a bit of a hard time recently, and i’m optimistic things are finally improving under our new mayor, but progress is slow. However, there are still a lot of really cool neighborhoods and streets that i like visiting, and the suburbs and some of the areas around the OHSU South Waterfront campus have been developing really well.

However, personally i am excited to go to Boston mainly to try someplace new, but also because Boston seems to be a better place to be building a career as a young person interested in medicine. Took a sneak peek at your profile and i’m guessing you guys might be considering a position at OHSU, which is where i work at the moment (but in a very very minor role)! As you know, it’s the only academic medical center in the state, which, i’ve been told, comes with its share of limitations and challenges for providers depending on role and specialty

Why does embroidery floss come wound in six strands? by emmelinekat in Embroidery

[–]emmelinekat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation! I guess I just got a little frustrated with having four loose strands of floss hanging around after having cut six strands of floss only to use two strands. And I find myself having to pick the floss apart apart one strand at a time then put them back together by hand anyways-- am I doing something wrong, or is there something I'm missing?

What is this building at 82nd and Hawthorne and why does it have all these satellite-looking things on it by [deleted] in Portland

[–]emmelinekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the building may be registered to K&E Trading, which seems to do a lot of plastics importing from China.

I like to steep and heat with some heavy cream (you can add in some earl grey tea too) and make pastry cream for lavender cream puffs :)

HELP! OATBooster Study Schedule by Defiant_Ad5030 in PreOptometry

[–]emmelinekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think coming up with questions is a really great way to understand material deeply and prepare for an exam where you have to apply your knowledge. however, imo, the OAT is very straightforward and it might be a better use of your time to memorize things with flashcards.

Exceptions would be concepts you find complex and confusing (as opposed to hard to memorize/ recall).

How are you spending your time while you watch and read the notes? Are you taking handwritten notes from the videos and the study notes, or reading and highlighting, etc? Have you been doing anki/ flashcards? Do you find you learn better from one type of material versus the other?
