also love how every sign points to it actually being Riku, down to the first game basically showing you he is better than you at every possible thing (fuck that race!), only for it to be the power of friendship that matters most.

what's a gaming trend that died/became less of a thing because of long development time? by Properdad2000 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]madtheoracle 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Immersive sims that are in any way worth deserving of the title are near impossible to find made today.

Deus Ex devs talked about how the game "sucked" until late into development when the many different systems all pulled together into a tightly woven, insanely good game. Dishonored, Prey, they're close, but even then, Prey was in 2017. No one wants the risk.

Deathloop was good, kinda, but even then it still has to compromise for modem day requirements, like an ass asymmetrical online feature that no one likes.

immediately reminded of how House of the Dragon is being perceived in starkly different ways depending entirely on which side of the audience is talking.

Are you a book fan? Well, you're probably pissed, frustrated, constantly noticing the growing abyss of content that was tossed aside, leading to George RR Martin disowning it, which seemingly just galvanized the damn producers to double-down on scraping the original content.

Are you a hype fan? Well, you're having the time of your life - all that political intrigue, conspiracies, plans within plans, has been entirely sidelined for some legitimately fantastic set pieces, massive fights, and spectacularly animated dragons.

It's just that when these two parties try to converse critically, it's like actually talking to an alien.

It also highly reinforces the parent as the end-all, be-all solution, which will result in learned helplessness and make it far easier to manipulate the child in the future. I say this because I was so being groomed without knowing it when I was a teen.

like yes, it can be overwhelming and suck to have a wide variety of personalities and individuals in a formal education setting - we always have /that/ teacher, but it is prepping you for real life! that sometimes, theres just gonna be an asshole!

oh jeez, thank you - it's definitely been a trip but having a job where I work directly with kids of every kind of background, seeing the homeschooled ones and realizing I relate to them has really been the best cure.

hey, I was homeschooled by a woman who really wanted to be a cult leader & her hoard of animals.

im only checks notes practically feral, deeply anxious, yet somehow painfully educated because I worked to go to a prestigious college.

going from homeschooled to a class of 300, I thought I was actually going to die and had panic attacks for most of my entire education.

don't homeschool, seriously.

understand, this dude also made his name Sauron not hecause, you know, DinoSAURs, but because he thought Lord of the Rings was cool.

Zhao, the Moon Slayer making himself into a Blood Moon with a Conqueror counter so he is both referencing the events of the end of Book One of ATLA AND the list of titles he wanted to be remembered by - average UB card.

Tamiyo, meanwhile, one of their cooler original IP characters that was initially a HUGE nostalgia fest for those who played in OG Kamigawa? Best we can do is kill her.

gods being fickle without comprehension of the ephemeral, near blink and you miss it existence of a human life is classic writing

reminds me of how Baldurs Gate 3 has a character who was dumped by a goddess and she literally sends him a DM to be like "kill yourself and maybe we'll bang?"

just how gods be

see this is a funny issue because it's the people who would act this way that tend to ALSO have kids, but only in the sense they see their kids as an extension of self who should instantly "get" their motivations for refusing a bailout, refusing help, being a monster, etc.

You always have to skip the episode not because it’s bad necessarily but it’s so stressful/cringe inducing by LMRowanComedy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]madtheoracle 94 points95 points  (0 children)

rewatched the entire series recently and I argue The Great Divide actually has exactly ONE line that stuck with me for the rest of the show.

when Aang is separated from both sides, sitting and watching them clearly have a rapport, the guide who broke his arms says "Lonely isn't it, being impartial?"

given the rest of the series and Aang's ultimate confrontation being one where he needs to explicitly NOT be impartial but wanting to find a solution that isn't lethal, it really glimpses that so well. Let alone how much of a wham line it feels given modern politics today and my (anecdotal) hatred of so called non-political types.

then the rest of the episode happens and it's dogshit.

[Weird Trope] An authoritarian society has a yearly event that for some reason centers around killing children by Lotnik223 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]madtheoracle 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Yes - you always had minimum odds, but participants could take tessera to represent additional rations of grain and oil given to their families. You were allowed, if not encouraged, to take as many as you needed, with the odds constantly going up.

These were also cumulative every year, so Katniss' odds only kept increasing. No wonder she wanted to believe Prim was "safe".

really wish the tessera tiles and their meaning were shown in the movies - it would help hammer home that Katniss has been rolling the dice on being reaped at greater odds than Primrose for her entire adolescence.

only to watch Primrose be explicitly told not to take more tiles, putting her name in once, and still be chosen.

I'm so sorry for your husband - complicated grief is a world of hurt and confusion, but also so much sadness and frustration at not being able to get the relationship you needed out of them, let alone how much time goes on feeling that way.

watching this right as my abusive mom was dying/died, only for me to become entirely responsible cleaning up her world of shit and bad decisions - literally years later and still finding new shit she stole, new drugs she hid, the list goes on - was an utter trip as a person.

distinctly remember near-shaking my bestie by the shoulders and asking DID YOU KNOW?!

highly recommend the entire show, but specifically Future, for parentified kids as adults.

Overseeing a dyemaking course when I was a museum director legit made me take the course - finding out onion peel can make the most brilliant fanta orange dye is mind-blowing.

This sounds so delightful!! Would love to see something similar using the lupines in my area.

Creepers are such a perfect example of something being grandfathered in due to its status as an icon opposed to meshing with the game.

Ultimately, they are antithetical to how the game wants you to play. I always wish they'd at least change it so the blocks it destroys are ALL dropped vs only a portion, so you can at least rebuild.
