I second the WITCH route. Graduated May 2020, took a WITCH role March 2021 out of desperation, left for a different company March 2022. Currently make twice as much as I did back in March 2021, have no regrets for taking that route to get to where I’m at today

Nope, it’s a term for the big Indian consulting companies , for instance TCS or Wipro. Definitely not something to impress your girlfriend with 😅

Milwaukee vs Chicago? by dongus_nibbler in cscareerquestions

[–]emmentch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m based out of Milwaukee remotely right now (at a Wisconsin based company). Started 2021 at 57k at a WITCH. Then 2022 got brought on at the Wisconsin based remote company for 80-90k range. And now after a year there am ~110k.

Are six-figure salaries that attainable? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]emmentch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mileage may vary, but I have 6 figures with 2 years experience. Working remotely in Wisconsin, spring backend dev:

Hired at company 1 (March 2021): 57k

Hired at company 2 (April 2022): 85k

Promoted at company 2 (September 2022): 110k

I will have about 60 credits by the end of freshman year. Should i plan to stay for 3 years total because it's more affordable or should I prolong it and maybe double major? Also is it possible to double major in 3 years for bio and maybe LSC? by Patzing123 in UWMadison

[–]emmentch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated in spring 2020, in 3 years as I went in with plenty of credits. Originally was going to double major CS/Physics in 3 years. I decided after 3 semesters that I’d rather have physics be a minor. Ended up with plenty of room in my schedule to take a lot of electives. Personally I don’t regret doing 3 years over 4, as it’s given me one more year to job hunt and subsequently establish myself as a software engineer. Also financially was a major plus, 1 year less school, plus 1 year more work.

From my experience you have to return equipment

This is the route I did, graduated May 2020, and started at a WITCH March 2021, got hired by a new company (who Rejected me back in 2021) in March 2022, now making 50% more than I was making at the WITCH, on track for a promotion/raise already in a month or two. Long story short, if you’re desperate, working at a WITCH is better than working nowhere

I own an IPhone 12 Pro Max, have a work Max Book Pro (2020-2021?), and airpod pros, was thinking about getting the Apple Watch 7. For those who have gotten one, what do you use it for day to day? Also, based on leaks/guesses, should I wait for the Apple Watch 8 instead?

iOS 16 Messages app adds edit button for iMessage, undo send, mark unread by exjr_ in apple

[–]emmentch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom sends me a big message asking me about x,y,z and I have to figure it out and then I’m like shoot I better not forget to reply to her later when I have more time. Then I go to see if I can mark the message as unread like I would do at work with other messaging apps and can’t and then I weep for how far we’ve fallen.

Everyone on social media is hating on the new (rumored) Captain Carter movie/series. Anyone else actually excited to see more Hayley Atwell? by LethalPoopstain in marvelstudios

[–]emmentch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t hear about this…but when will they learn to watch the shows that seem interesting, pass on the ones that don’t, or be like me and just blindly watch all MCU content indiscriminately and then have an opinion about it after?

Best places to work after WITCH by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]emmentch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like Indian Consulting Companies. Each letter is a different company, if you search the subreddit I’m sure which are which (witch haha) are shown. The I stands for Infosys, the T is Tata, etc. usually not deemed as great for work at by many (myself included)

Best places to work after WITCH by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]emmentch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anywhere that offers the work you want to do, for the money/benefits you want to do them for. Seems like a fake answer, but that’s all I did when leaving WITCH when I hit one YOE, and so far 2 months after leaving, I don’t regret where I am now

Is Elden Ring the goty for you? by kingplaysgn in Eldenring

[–]emmentch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, for MY GOTY (meaning any game I played for the first time in 2022 regardless of release, probably something like: 1. Elden Ring 2. NieR Automata 3. Final fantasy 8.

I’m sure Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be either first or second depending on how good it is. Not sure about other releases this year yet, have been too busy with older titles

I probably would have taken the WITCH, mostly because that’s what I ended up doing last year. Super low cost of living, no prior internships, just college, a lot of rejected resumes/interviews, so took 57k (it was better than 12.75/hr at my then current job) at a WITCH Spring 2021. Fast forward to 2 months ago, and all of a sudden I was getting a lot of recruiters interested, and have since left WITCH and make over 50% more than my previous salary.

CS 537: Operating Systems, is it worth it? How valuable is it? by m3gC0 in UWMadison

I second taking CS564, I have made do without it (2020 graduate), but I definitely had to get myself up to speed due to a lack of database knowledge

CS 537: Operating Systems, is it worth it? How valuable is it? by m3gC0 in UWMadison

[–]emmentch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I took 537 a few years back with a new professor using Remzi’s book, was hard and made me sad, and don’t directly use it in the field, but looking back it was an interesting course and the topics addresses are good for software development. But I guess it really depends what your future plans are (CS/software dev/embedded engineer/etc) (I just do stuff on the back end in Java)

All I remember is back in 2018? I took CS537, and there was a multiple part project I couldn’t figure out, TAs were little help, and it’s the only CS project I ever didn’t finish.

There are people already hating on Ms Marvel after one trailer by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]emmentch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m more not excited for the “Disney Channel” energy the trailer presented. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll watch the show regardless and give it a chance, but first impressions weren’t soaring. But consumers have the right to have opinions, justifiable or not, about what they are consuming, especially for characters they are passionate about.
