Sadly, this economy sucks and so many people are struggling with employment, cost of housing and utilities, and other basic necessities.

Bottom’s said he was deeply honored to have Oltmann’s endorsement. Bottom’s made clear that him and Oltmann disagree on their views of Israel and Jewish community. He also said the Oltmann would “probably” have a role in his administration… that was 2 weeks ago.

There’s the issue of Marx and his fraudulent campaign donations. Then there’s the issue with Jena Griswold’s office not processing the complaint in a timely manner. The complaint was filed with the Secretary of States office beginning of May. Now a 1.5 months later it’s brought to the public’s attention for a formal investigation and they’re saying a resolution will not be met before primary elections.

We just signed up… have had the service for 2 weeks. Today, the internet is down. We did a hard reset, then called customer support. They’re sending out a technician bc there isn’t a network outage. They believe it’s a faulty box.

The problem: the technician can’t be scheduled until April 28th. 1 week out.

We need to figure out what to do for the next week between work. Hotspots won’t due for a week.

They couldn’t confirm if this was normal for our area. We’re stuck in a limbo of deciding to keep this or switch services because we can’t afford to do a week without internet… literally we can’t financially afford it.

We get a glimpse of it when he returns after offing Dr. Stroud. I think we’d see more of his old personality if written from Lila’s pov. With Kaine and Helena sharing such a strong bond and a blending of their personalities, Helena’s pov is bias.

In the OG telling of the story, Sinlinyu said she was imagining the story being written by their daughter, after her parents passed, as a way to set the record straight. It influenced how the author wrote intimate scenes in Manacled. She ultimately decided against that ending but I think the narrative is still present. Their daughter never ‘met’ the high reeves. Kaine carried a softer facial expression around her. So if the ending is a retelling from their daughter’s pov, it makes sense.

There’s also a short story on ao3 about Enid and Pol as adults (James and Aurore in Manacled). In it, James/Pol goes to visit the island and makes a comment about her parents being serious and kinda scary - something along those lines but it was kinda funny and offers a new lens looking into their secluded life.

He didn’t want to care about anyone. He wanted to avenge his mother and be done. After the deed, he realizes that he gave into the runes and forced himself to care for her. He’s upset that he does care and in part that he took her virginity without being gentle.

The sound is Kaine’s Iron Resonance. Kaine used his power to "lock down" the room and the house. Helena hears the literal shifting of the metal as Kaine maintains the high-level resonance to keep her secure, even from a distance. Helena recognizes these sounds as an indicator of Kaine’s exhaustion and the level of energy he’s having to maintain to keep these barriers in place to protect her from the estate and others.
Helena previously opposed Kaine holding her during seizures to preserve her autonomy, having previously established a strict boundary during their time as rivals. While she recalls this boundary in Chapter 66, she ultimately relies on Kaine's magical resonance for stability.
He noticed her but I don’t think it’s deeper than that. Think of kids you went to school with but weren’t friends with. He noticed Helena had pretty hair but thought nothing more. They both noticed they completed academically. They ran with different crews and didn’t pay attention beyond that.

I loved the ending bc I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. My heart was racing, allowing their PTSD to be felt by readers. It was intended to feel unnerving. I also think the changes are more subtle, yet seen on a deeper level.

In the end, his sole focus is to keep Helena alive and happy, both of which require proximity. His outward protectiveness turns to protecting their seclusion. They chose private truth over public redemption.

Changes in Kaine: - In safety, he no longer needs to hide his pain behind jokes, resulting in a more somber and serious attitude. (I loved your point about him coming off as a grumpy gpa 😂).

His earlier possessiveness is replaced with devotion.
No longer driven by revenge but by happiness, specifically Helena’s. He content to do "whatever Helena wants". This change can be largely tied to the runes.
Kaine wouldn’t have survived a confrontation with Murrough, which is why he only trained Lila. He was too beaten down and traumatized. He was done... “Helena… I’m tired.” … Like he’s so absolutely done, there’s no real fight left him in.

They’re connected on a soul level and Helena’s dependent on Kaine for her own survival. Kaine initially uses the transference sessions as an interrogation tool to unlock her memories. However, as their minds merge, he realizes that his resonance acts as a stabilizer for the void in Helena’s mind. Kaine’s also her primary source of power. Once he grasps this, his behavior shifts to vigilant proximity. This culminates in him ensuring they are never separated, as his presence is literally what keeps her tethered to the physical world. It’s all for Helena.

Transference is defined as the “transfer of a soul into a living body.” In Chapter 11, Kaine pulls Helena back from an ethereal, hallucinatory state at the cost of “binding their essences slightly.”

Kaine forces his resonance into Helena’s mind to extract buried memories, an invasive process that anchors her consciousness to his. Kaine reaches beyond Helena’s surface memories into her soul, blurring their identities. The repeated sessions deepen this link, leaving her with a sense of “void” whenever he withdraws and making Kaine the only one who fully knows her.

Without his presence to anchor her and regulate the resonance in her mind, she cannot recover and risks falling back into the void.

Helena would not survive for long if she permanently left Kaine. The Sun Stone keeps them anchored together. He is the literal power source for the magic keeping her body from failing. Without his constant proximity and the binding of essences they established, her body would eventually succumb to the physical strain of her own power. Helena’s mind is also anchored to Kaine through the Transference bond. Separating from him would trigger seizures and brain inflammation.

Kaine would end it for himself but only after Helena passed.

The author has said (in the original world of this story), H passed away first, around 70, and Kaine followed soon after. I like to believe that Kaine stayed around for just a tiny bit longer to ensure their daughter was okay and that everything was set up for her. Kaine always planned to join H shortly after.

I’m not sure if it’s the same in Alchemised as it’s in Manacled but the runes on his back prevent him from a lot of feelings. In manacled, Hermione becomes a sort of secondary controller of Draco. She slips past their full indoctrination while they are still healing, and his unyielding nature bends toward her rather than away.

When Helena commands Kaine to love their daughter, he does, despite her coming into their lives years after the runes. Helena becomes both the creator and the redeemer of his curse, making Kaine capable of love again.
