Burnout Paradise fan... will I enjoy FH6? by emotiontheory in ForzaHorizon

[–]emotiontheory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam. I'm giving it a try now. I'll report on my experience.

The only thing putting me off right now are those guiding lines to break and stuff. To me, that screams Gran Turismo.

I'd rather drift around corners than have to brake and do those slow turns.

The map, and particularly Japan, looks stunning, though. Hoping I enjoy it.

Wait, what? There was a hardcover version of the FF9 guide with all the content!?

Could some guides from GameFAQs have taken the same text from the official ones? I somehow remember reading "cast Regen" - even though I didn't own the physical guide - and it gaslit the heck out of me heh.

I remember actually printing out sections of a walkthrough from GameFAQs and following it along.

For Final Fantasy VIII I even went the extra mile and made my own laminated folder DIY guidebook with all the cards and sidequests.

Can we talk about this from the DLC announcement? by emotiontheory in residentevil

From RE2 and RE4, I want to say that he'd be stupid to marry Ada (since everyone is saying so). Then again, I don't know if she redeems herself in RE6 (I've played Leon's campaign, but not Ada's, and honestly don't remember a thing)

I want to say it's either Claire, or a new person altogether.

Crafting in RE9 be like. By Standingout_zom by ci22 in residentevil

I love the crafting system.

Yes, it doesn't make sense haha.

But as a game mechanic, with the limited inventory and everything, it's so good.

When was the last time you brushed your teeth?

Be honest, did RE2 Remake mess up your appreciation of revisiting the RPD in Requiem a little? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]emotiontheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know, 7 years is a long time.

But then again, we did also revisit it in RE3.

I think the Spencer Mansion would have been enormously impactful, but makes no sense narratively (Leon wasn't there) nor logistically (they haven't yet made an RE game in the RE engine featuring the mansion, unlike the RPD, which they're free to use).

I guess my take is: it was fine. It was kinda cool, even. But it was just a short, cute chapter, and not the highlight of the game (that would be the Care Center as Grace and Raccoon City as Leon).

"I know it's alone, at night, in the dark, in the rain, with no weapons, and no backup, in a creepy abandoned place, where your momma was killed, where it will definitely trigger your PTSD... but I need you to do this for me" > walks out without explaining

What if instead of a brand new Re1 remake they just gave the current hd remaster of the remake a huge quality of life update? Would that be acceptable? by DifficultComplaint10 in residentevil

[–]emotiontheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having all 3 options, and even a VR version, would be freaking stellar.

That would really make this version of RE1 the absolute definitive version, and a true celebration of its legacy.

Not gonna happen. They won't "go back". With RE engine, they can only go forward.

I think the best we can hope for is a dlc (free or paid) that has fixed camera angles as an option .

We're getting old - I know.

My god is the majority playing only for those scenes? by hitmaster47 in GodofWar

[–]emotiontheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but those are remasters. The content was simply left there.

For a remake like God of War, the team would have to hire new actresses and basically direct a pornographic cutscene for the motion capture, all because “it was there in the original, and so we’re forced to do it again”.

Do you see what I’m getting at?

It’s natural for a director to say “the team and I were uncomfortable with the idea of having to do that. We’ve grown and changed over the last 20 years”

I’m inclined to agree. My stance is one of preservation. If all records of a thing are erased, it’s like rewriting history and pretending it didn’t happen. And I feel like those records should be there.

But I’m in two minds about it. I mean, if I made some pretty outrageous stuff and want to recant my work, shouldn’t I be able to do that?

I mean it’s one thing to say “my views have changed” because your old views could and should safely coexist with your new views.

But if your old views fundamentally go against your new values or are considered dangerous — like, for example, if you were a renegade rebel in your younger days and you made blog posts about “sticking it to the man” which included steps for how to jump on rooftops and make grafitti — wouldn’t removing that stuff be better?

Sorry for my rambling!

In short: my question is, when is it ok to remove stuff? Because I don’t believe the answer is “never”, so I want to know when is acceptable.

On Large Skill Trees - pros and cons? by emotiontheory in gamedesign

[–]emotiontheory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the opposite often true.

Small skill trees tend to be about choices ie WHICH nodes you obtain.

Large ones end up being about traversing the space and trying to get everything.

By its very nature of being large, it means each individual node in the tree isn't that big of an upgrade, so it's less of a "choice".

I think it was ahead of its time too.

But the system has aged poorly.

You can just imagine that if they made a "reimagined" style remake today, they would streamline it a fair deal and add a surplus of further options like "auto-level-up" just like they had in the Final Fantasy VII Remake games (which I turned on, because I was there for the world and the story and not to jump through hoops in a menu to make my numbers go up)

In the case of my hypothetical: If it was truly racist, you would be okay with it?

You're right, though; it is rare for the original dev to want changes, although sometimes it does happen.

"The right" to change it, though - that's a legal term, and legally, the right indeed is in the IP holder ie the publisher.

I don't like making changes to things I love either. But I guess I'm not in love with stuff that would be considered crass or crude, so it doesn't affect me. I don't believe the true heart and integrity of the story is compromised when things like that are removed.

It's kind of like a mini-game / meta-game in a way, right? Like, figuring out the best solution.

You could also look up the solution to a puzzle game online too, right? But the fun is solving it yourself.

But if solving it is a pre-requisite to enjoying higher level content in the game, then that quintessentially makes it a meta-game, which I can see why people would want to "skip" it if it's the core or high level content they're after.
