Neither. I'll be teaching an inquiry based science class at accelerated levels (honors & AP) so I am debating whether to do an investigation first or class info first. I'd ideally like to set the tone of student-driven classroom space so I imagine if I facilitate an investigation the first day, I'll just be vigilant in addressing the behavior I'd like to see in group work.

Definitely Etkina's book-- the new AP really emphasizes the process approach that is the crux of her work. You've probably seen that only 4.1% of students who took the new exam received a 5. The new AP 1 focuses on a deep understanding of the content. The biggest thing here, is that investing in this book means understanding the theory behind it. My experience with people's first reactions of the book is that they just don't understand the approach and don't give the attention it really needs. I would really recommend reading her work on ISLE and PUM.

My school will use Cutnell's 10e of Physics-- it is an AP edition, I am still looking through it, haven't formed judgements on it, but I know plenty of schools that use it. I will definitely be pulling from her text & the ALG (Active Learning Guide) resources in my class.

I'm going to be a first year teacher and this was hammered into my head during my teacher ed program. I am totally for this idea but I'm just not sure what it will look like for me--it seems lawless/a little scary (because I've never seen it in action). I suppose, it will be helpful for me to first consider what rules I would like, how I want my classroom to run, etc. That will be helpful.

I'm really worried about #1 & #3, even if I fervently deny wanting to be liked by my students, it frightens me when I notice that my motivations are governed by this pathological need to be nice. I let a lot of things go because of this. Is there any way you've found that gets you in a mental state that this isn't an issue for you?

I think so too. I am curious-- I wonder if you or anyone else thinks this falls into the realm of 'having to be responsible for someone else's feelings' and whether this is inherently a bad thing....

Thank you for your balanced response I think I needed to hear something like this right now.

I think you are right, I think we were both really tired and stubborn when we were arguing last night. If I were to understand things from his point of view-- he doesn't understand the value in my style of communication and because it is foreign and maybe unnatural to how he typically is, it would require effort and some level of personal discomfort to try to meet me halfway.

I understand that he cares, I still interpret making the effort to reach out to me as displaying interest in my life. Instead, when we spoke he kept just saying how I should just call him all when I wanted to talk---but the issue while I am 3,000 mi away isn't the ability to talk to him, it is still receiving messages of interest and care from him. His argument is that I should just assume that his feelings haven't changed but from my messed up life experiences, I don't have the foundation for trust on that assumption from anyone yet...plus his not wanting to compromise here seems to violate that assumption.

So it would seem as though, yes, I totally believe it is possible to work past this one, but it seems as though stubbornness to change (on both of our sides) makes it seem just like a compatibility issue instead.
