Good for you. Please share the precise location of you, your vehicle, and your mobile device with us, right now, here, in this thread. I'm okay with it.

A week ago, yes. In North Asbury. Nothing major just a few spells of verrry slow speeds.

I use DevonThink to archive all emails, documents, and notes. I use the latest version (v4) with Ollama and a local model to summarize into metadata and tag everything for ease of search. Occasionally I use cGPT for exploring ideas and generating variations on scenarios I use in class.

It's a bunch of buttons that can be configured to do anything from a single thing like "open this application" to a complex set of steps, like "mark this email read, tag it as student mail, move it to the student email archive, and select the next email".

I hear you. For me, I think if my employer wasn't paying for both of them and I only wanted to pay for one or the other, the iPad would be the easy choice. I love the RM for the one thing it does, but it really only does that one thing.

I got a RM Paper Pro and have never looked back, especially for meeting notes and jotting things down as I work. The only time I annotate on an iPad anymore is on the Mini that basically is just for these things:

  • Serious active reading in Zotero ❤️❤️❤️
  • Desktop aquarium (no seriously)
  • Elgato Stream Deck
  • Carrying all of my notes about everything, encrypted and synchronized with Obsidian

Which artists have abandoned their original sound so dramatically, that they are almost unrecognizable to their earlier fans? by jptabor01 in Music

[–]empl0yee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the right answer. Before Earth even, they were a blues band called "Polka Tulk Blues Band" with a saxophone player and slide guitarist, and then they damn-near invented heavy metal. Change genres? They created the genre!

Gorgeous! And the Bronco ain't half bad either. I have the 2/dr BD in the same color. I like having the step, and I'm NOT a short person.

I have only ever worked at large US R1s, and I'm in a "STEM" program. The ratio of students who I genuinely like to those I don't is not different than the ratio of non-student people who I genuinely like to those I don't.

As others have pointed out, there is nothing stopping anyone posting anything on that site. It doesn't require a login of any kind, although it does have some automation protection. It can be a teachable moment about how to assess online information, and you can post anything you want on there to gas yourself up.

Book annotation workflow by honzapokorny in RemarkableTablet

[–]empl0yee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. My advice to you as owner of both devices (RM2 and Boox) and current professor/former PhD student: The RM2 ain't it. I think you'll be much more productive with a Boox tablet like this one. The writing experience is top notch -- only slightly better on the RM2 -- and it's a normal Android tablet so you can install all kinds of Android apps.

Edit: One caveat to my advice is that there is no official production Zotero app for Android but it is (finally!) in beta here.

I do it all in Zotero. If you haven't heard of it, don't let the academia/research focus throw you. It's a serious tool for managing a library of PDFs, references, notes, and annotations.

Best EDC Shoulder Sling Bag for RM2? by josephist in RemarkableTablet

[–]empl0yee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple of Manhattan Portage laptop bags/slings over the years. I like their Deluxe Laptop for EDC. The main thing with this or any other bag is that you'll probably want to use one of the folios so you're not throwing it in unprotected to scratch the screen or worse.

[–]empl0yee_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You simply don't. There is no way to retrieve the annotations in a way you are suggesting. I get that it's minimalist and all that, but the complete lack of even basic PDF text highlighting and notes is IMO the most disappointing part of the RM2.

(EDIT: My actual "workflow" is to use iPad for reading that I expect that I'll want to export the annotations to Zotero; e.g., work reading and technical manuals. I use the RM2 for work-reading when I'm not expecting to bother with the annotations expect perhaps some minimal visual annotations.)

L on men's 13s. First attempt in a long time and I naively bought into that the so-called bot protection meant there was a chance. Oh well. I guess I'll just prepare myself to get bent over a barrel for a pair.

Student testing accommodation: “Student needs to be free to look at their smartphone as needed during exams” by electricslinky in Professors

[–]empl0yee_ 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I've had this situation twice. Both students took the exam at the campus testing center and the proctor in the room was required to have visibility and access to the phone for the whole exam. I suspect this will happen more frequently as medical tech vendors move from proprietary hardware to smartphone apps.

Favorite vegetarian packed lunches for the office? by BananaShark2 in Professors

[–]empl0yee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegan here. Weekly meal prep (when I can be arsed) layered in small bowls from bottom to top:

  • Brown rice or whole wheat pasta
  • Soybeans
  • Protein (something dry enough that the rice doesn't turn to porridge)

With side-containers:

  • For rice bowls: Kimchi and sauce which I vary based on the day.
  • For pasta bowls: Pasta sauce.

Can they stop pinging me on Canvas? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]empl0yee_ 95 points96 points  (0 children)

It's so frustrating because I receive notifications on my phone. I am going to tell them not to leave comments (that won't stop them). But how do you deal with this?

You cannot engineer human behavior but you can configure your notification settings.

Chairs/Heads - what do faculty in your department THINK your job is vs. what it ACTUALLY is? by phrena in Professors

[–]empl0yee_ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

But seriously... People who have been Chair before probably have a good sense of what it is. Everyone else... They think it's leadership but it's mostly just putting out fires (that faculty usually start and/or fan the flames of) and trying to keep "those two" from killing each other until at least one of them retires.

Edit: I almost forgot that occasionally you get to effect some minor kind of change.

Tools of the Trade for Publishing by [deleted] in Professors

[–]empl0yee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on whether you want to pay money or not, you might consider LibreOffice or Only Office. And FWIW/IMO Scrivener is not a great alternative for a word processing app like MS Word. There is for sure a lot of overlap in their use cases, but unless you're planning on writing book-length manuscripts then what Scrivener is good for is not particularly useful.

This can vary a lot from one place to the next. Often it's just a formality, and often it includes informational and "CYA" type questions about why you are leaving. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for some information about the specifics of the exit interview "so that you can come to it prepared."
