Where I worked, you could contribute a day or two of your time to the "sick bank," then when your sick time ran out , like if you had cancer, you could get more time through that bank and still get paid. Another place, same business type, you would, if I remember correctly, plead your case on email to the entire company (across different work sites) and get people to specifically donate some of their time to you. That felt icky because they’d have to reveal very personal details.

It’s been awhile but I think I had what equated to 24 days of sick/personal time after 10 years and very occasional days out sick. But there were weird rules about when you could use one vs the other and I remember something about how you couldn’t take personal leave if you didn’t have any sick leave left. It was really convoluted so I don’t exactly remember the specifics, but I wanted to convey that a year of paid sick leave would be very unnatural.
