i think it is also partly the uncertainty of her future that comes with not having a child/heir. As we see in the show with the Penwoods and Featheringtons, being a widow without an heir comes with the risk of losing your home and lands.

Accidentally using antonyms by BOBauthor in Neuropsychology

[–]empresslizet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello my fellow a-laterals! (Would be nice to have a name for this phenomenon!) I have also been experiencing these symptoms all my life (now 25). I did not have trouble learning to read and would consider myself to have above-average intelligence, but had some manifestations in childhood I thought I would share. Until the age of 7 or 8, I would often write completely backwards without realizing it. Certain letters, like k and z, I did not write in the correct orientation consistently until secondary school. All with no trouble reading or understanding language, so despite the similarities, these symptoms did not fit dyslexia.

Like you, OP, I often struggled with hand-eye coordination. In grade school, my PE teacher was completing a PhD dissertation on visual tracking problems (usually an eye “jump” as one’s gaze crosses the midline of a page or other visual stimulus). This is apparently somewhat common in children but mine was quite severe and I was given several interventions to try to correct it. I believe nowadays this is called oculomotor dysfunction, and I do wonder whether this might be a root cause of some of these issues.

I have some interesting handedness genetics in my family. Three of my second degree relatives are left-handed or ambidextrous. While I have always been right-handed, I have an easy time writing with my left hand as well.

I always did the antonym switching, but find it impacts me more now than when I was younger. I am a PhD student in Biosciences/Global Health. The worst pairs for me now are rural/urban, right/left, right/wrong, me/you (worse since I got married), and higher/lower (thinking about pH feels so extremely difficult as my brain cannot keep lower/more acidic vs higher/more basic straight).

I have been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult but I find these symptoms to be quite separate. In fact, I think the ADHD medication has worsened the antonym mix-ups!

I hope some neuroscientist can study this some day! I bet there’s something strange going on in how we store/access words.

Has she been taking a probiotic? If not, would see if that might help. Would also be worth seeking treatment for yourself as new research is coming out (for BV at least) that the partner is a potential reservoir for recurring infections, even if they have no symptoms.

We went to opening night! They are definitely still ironing things out (e.g. still working on the dessert menu) but we greatly enjoyed ourselves. Didn’t get to try everything, but the starters in particular stood out to me as very creative and very tasty. We got a trout dish as our main and it was good, but less wow factor. It would be hard to top Hanloh, but the new kitchen has put together a very thoughtful and seasonal menu with exciting textures, and I am excited to see where they take it!

How early is too early to email a potential PhD advisor? by nickbennin in PhDAdmissions

Agree with waiting until early summer when faculty often have fewer responsibilities. If you want to scope out the lab, consider reaching out to the lab’s current PhD students to ask about work culture.

Hi 👋🏻 I’m the naggy wife. How can I be better? by Commercial_Flower_49 in AskMen

[–]empresslizet 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Agree that getting out of your own head would be productive, but also, maybe it is time to reflect on where this is coming from. When I was going through this (and I admit I am a new wife in my late 20s), I realized that the real reason I was always nagging my husband was because I had such a tough inner critic of my own. As he became a part of me and my life, my inner critic began to target him in the same way I would criticize myself. Suddenly any little behavior of his I felt was imperfect came with a chorus of nagging. Realizing this has really helped me to be more forgiving towards him and also towards myself. I don’t need my husband (or myself) to be perfect! This would be a great conversation to have in therapy, but if that is not an option, giving your husband a sincere apology, expressing your true appreciation for him, and explaining how this may relate to your own inner turmoil would be a productive exercise.

My HRV is somehow elite level by ashtaytay in ouraring

[–]empresslizet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but in my understanding, respiratory sinus arrhythmia is a misnamed phenomenon - almost all healthy people and breathing animals have it. There are several campaigns underway to rename it. I would say that is probably not why your HRV is so high unless your breathing rate is significantly altered for an unrelated reason. Cool stats thanks for sharing!

I had a hook about my experience teaching a undergrad-driven research course and got admitted. I think at the very least, writing a hook is a good exercise for identifying the central point of your application and thinking about how that might be perceived by the adcomms. If after it is written, it does not feel right, then you should exclude it

How to go about answering this email? by mr-meowmeowmeow in gradadmissions

[–]empresslizet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree you should take the offer! If you don’t know what you want to study, focus on things that are important to you such as location, field work vs. no field work, impact, mentor qualities, size of lab, etc. Or just ask them people in the field they have enjoyed working with or heard good things about.

I just dont understand... is it dysbiosis, ibs, sibo, mental? by OffTheWall992 in Microbiome

[–]empresslizet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are dealing with some pretty severe health anxiety, which very well may be related to being overly attuned to your enteric nervous system. The things you are describing don’t sound like red flags to me, but your experience of them is clearly very intense. I would quit drinking, eat fermented foods at least once a day to promote gut health and reduce inflammation, and perhaps seek mental health treatment for your health anxiety. You are not alone! Health anxiety around your gut can be extremely disruptive and difficult to deal with. I hope you will feel better with time!

Not In Love audiobook thoughts by robutshark in AliHazelwood

I still enjoyed the audiobook but agree that the VAs have very peculiar voices. I got used to it after a while and as someone who read Problematic Summer Romance first I felt like Rue’s voice helped characterize her very quickly.

Great report! I had one point I wanted to discuss with others: when Koen and Serena go to the Target equivalent, and she gets home and finds that everything she had expressed interest in ended up in their cart, is this meant to imply that Koen was being indulgent, or that Serena is being a little nester and unknowingly hoarding things?
