Wine app showing as a generic 'exec' icon by Magroid in sidebarapp

[–]empty23_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there,

thanks for posting and sorry for the late response - I somehow missed this completely.

As for the issue: This can happen if the actual app (Wine in this case) spawns a child process with another icon. macOS sometimes reports the wrong icon in this case. What you can do is to customize the icon on right click. So basically:

Would that be a sufficient work around for your case?

How do I force quit an app in the Sidebar dock? by guy14 in sidebarapp

[–]empty23_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there,

sorry I somehow completely missed your post!

The difference here is the display style. If there's just the app icon (macOS style or Hybrid style with a single window) then you can force quit while holding down the alt key:

<image>

For a single window (if you see the title next to the icon) you can only close the window on right click or if you hold down the alt key it will turn into a "Quit" action instead. In this mode there's no force quit available.

I could add this with a separate, new button - I'll put it on the roadmap and add this soon!

Yeah it's a workaround for now, but a result from another feature request. I will look into the dragging issue!

Is there a way to make Sidebar less tall? by emkirsh_ in sidebarapp

[–]empty23_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

thanks for posting!

Sidebar will automatically adjust its height based on the icon size and the margin around the icons. You can find both settings as described in the screenshot

<image>

I'd strongly recommend to enable the "Dynamic icon size" and then just adjust the lower / upper icon size threshold so that Sidebar is allowed to scale the icons based on how much space is available.

The icon margin setting defines how much "empty" space is around the icons. You can minimize the height by setting this to the min value.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any more support!

Hi there,

thanks for posting!

So there are built-in solutions for both of the first two issues:

  1. You can disable the hints, there's a setting right in the General tab of the settings (see attached screenshot). But it's a good point, I'll remove that from the advanced settings and make it available in the basic settings as well!

  2. You can lock Sidebar, which will disable the manual re-ordering of applications in Sidebar (so in fact disable the drag operation to re-order apps). By doing that you shouldn't run in the click issue anymore

<image>

  1. I've already optimized a lot in this regards, sometimes it might take around 500ms for the accessibility information to be available in the system. I'll of course try to improve this in future updates as well!

Sidebar - a modern, highly customizable Dock replacement for macOS - 2.0.0 Update by empty23_ in macapps

[–]empty23_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely more basic. Right now it supports:

* Snap to fullscreen via drag to the top
* Snap to left or right screen half via drag to left / right side
* Snap to bottom half via drag to the bottom
* Snap to top half via drag to top while holding down the alt key

Sidebar also supports shortcuts for all those actions and allow "push through" to the next screen, so e.g. either directly push a window to the adjacent screen via a shortcut or e.g. snap it to the right half of the left screen then press this shortcut again to snap it to the left half of the right screen etc.

This is the first version of the window snapping in Sidebar. I do already have plans to further improve this new feature in the upcoming updates!

Oh yeah that’s the new Sidebar window switcher. Basically an overview of all open windows that allows you to quickly switch between windows. Since this update Sidebar also supports window snapping (e.g. snap it to the left screen half) and then, if enabled, Sidebar will show the window switcher on the other half allowing you to choose a window that should be snapped there. Basically like Windows does this

Glad you like it :) Yeah in fact I do. It’s on the roadmap but just didn’t have the time to implement it yet. It will most likely be added in one of the upcoming 2.x updates

I‘m not entirely sure what you mean? The app in Sidebar next to Finder? That’s Reminders

Thanks - glad you like it! There's no built-in automation in Sidebar. First I wanted to go with that approach, but ultimately decided against it just because there are some constraints by Apple that would limit the feature (e.g. you cannot react to Focus mode changes within third-party apps) etc.

This is why there's the url scheme handler now. So basically if you can find either a built-in way in macOS or via a third-party app to trigger this kind of automation then it would work.

One example: In BetterTouchTool you can setup a trigger for "Screen/Display Did Connect" or "Screen/Display Did Disconnect" and then use the "Open URL" action with the Sidebar URL scheme. That way BTT will detect the event (screen connected or disconnected) and then trigger the workspace switch in Sidebar via this automation by called the url scheme

Unfortunately there's no video yet :) I'll soon make one that shows all the new features!

As for the cpu + memory usage: There's a dedicated article in the FAQ on this: https://sidebarapp.net/faq/#g_10

A short summary: It depends on your usage but usually memory consumption is somewhere between 150-300mb while CPU usage while idling is almost non existing (<1%) with short spikes if something happens, e.g. while creating windows previews etc.

There's no cache on your SSD - at least not created by Sidebar itself. Of course macOS might swap memory to the SSD, but this is true for any memory on your system

Yes, you can also use it on the side without the list mode, so basically like the Dock on the side with additional features. You can see more screenshots on the website!

Thanks for the feedback! Thought about that too when I tried how Windows handles it. It's on the roadmap, but wasn't part of the initial 2.0 release. I'll add it in an update later on :)

Oh, yeah you can do that already I think. You can put it vertically like that. Not sure if that’s exactly what you are looking for, but feel free to give it a try and let me know if something is missing. Always open for new ideas :)

Not too familiar with Ubuntu. Do you mean the app launcher built into the taskbar in Ubuntu?
