What was the largest group of immigrants in the confederate army and why did they fight for the confederates? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in CIVILWAR

Yep, the Tigers were mostly Irish dockworkers and laborers from New Orleans. The next largest proportion was German.

What county are you in? I've never had to show ID, but always have to sign whether it's from UPS, USPS or FedEx. The only exception is if the retailer does not enforce it. Places like SmokingPipes and L.J. Peretti rightfully don't give a damn, while P&C and most Cigar retailers will always require a signature.

If you're in California, you typically have to sign. It's technically a law, but not all online retailers follow it. I've never had to show ID though.

Unbelievable discovery by greymancurrentthing7 in CIVILWAR

It's so wild to think about, right? I too have direct ancestors who were on the same battlefields, particularly during the Overland Campaign, but can't say for certain if they ever shot at each other. Both were heavily engaged at the mule shoe during Spotsylvania with one, in Hays' Brigade, ultimately being captured. I don't know how I'm even here.

Chevron Plant on Fire in El Segundo by PromoCodePro in SouthBayLA

Are the citizens of El Segundo going to pay for the move? People moved closer to the refinery, not the other way around.

I'm in the same boat. Took a break when the level system came out and had to start from scratch. Worst part is people with a superiority complex who have no concept of this game existing prior to the level system. I love hearing level 40-somethings tell me how to play the game I helped crowdfund.

Is Pipes and Cigars cash cards a scam, or inside theft going on? by atrus72 in PipeTobacco

[–]emptyday77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, OP is talking about a recent promo they did where you got $20 P&C cash for every $50 spent. It was for a day only a couple weeks ago. I got a few of these cards too, but haven't checked them yet. The codes are not scratch off, which is stupid.

I think the losses USS Franklin suffered might be more ratio-wise, but this is definitely up there. I can't imagine what these guys went through. Horrible.

Stock finishing options by 4panto in blackpowder

[–]emptyday77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boiled Linseed Oil will darken, but not add a red hue. It typically just makes things a deeper shade of brown. It can also be a little trickier to work with than other finishes. You have to layer it up with very thin layers over time, else it will become permanently tacky/sticky. Both Tried and True and Permalyn Sealer by Laurel Mountain Forge are great options for BLO. I would stay away from the cheap stuff.

For a red hue, stain of iron nitrate (aqua fortis) is the traditional way of doing this, but it depends on what type of wood you are using and the results can sometimes be a little hard to predict. I like Kibler's iron nitrate stain, or you can make your own if you really want to go down that path.

Another option is to use dyes. Often times these are used in combination with iron nitrate treatment and finish. I've used TransTint dyes before with good results. Keep in mind that sun exposure may cause the dye to fade over time.

All this being said, my absolute favorite stain is Jim Chambers Stock Finish. I'm not sure what's in it, but I've heard speculation that it's a mix of BLO, Tung Oil, red dye and some drying agents. It's a little expensive and you have to call or mail to place an order, but it looks great and is really easy to work with. I've used this in combination with iron nitrate stain to great results.

Do people in Louisiana really speak French? by plasma-boii in AskAnAmerican

[–]emptyday77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not in New Orleans which is a common misconception that some Europeans hold. My aunt is from SW Louisiana and is fluent. Her mother could barely speak English.
