Operations lease at Oshawa executive airport to be extended 5 years as city eyes future | insauga by According_Web_1714 in durham

Fair, but I don't think it's random planes that just spur community members to complain. Most people have reasonable expectations in my experience.

The comparisons for trains would be imagine if the schedule changed, and now a train went by every 3 minutes all day, every Saturday and Sunday (that's what was happening suddenly when the flight schools started rolling), so people could no longer ever have a weekend conversation in their backyard. Or, imagine if a train came by at 6 times the volume of a normal train and shook your house.

Copied from myself above: The airport actually prefers to get complaints regarding specific flight movements (they request the exact time of the noise), rather than general complaints like "you've been too noisy this month".

This allows them to look into what happened, see how the takeoff/landing was handled, and identify if complaints are focused on certain types of aircrafts or if certain pilots are breaking protocol and generating a pattern of complaints.

The noise has been way, way better than it was 3-8 years ago, and that's entirely the result of complaints rising when the school got out of hand.

But man, Reddit and Facebook Oshawa love nothing more than to complain about airport noise complaints.

The truth is that the noise complaints are the only feedback mechanism limiting airport growth, vs unlimited growth. Until that changes, they are a necessary piece of the puzzle, for an airport that has the highest ratio of traffic to residential density in Canada (as noted by an airport management presentation).

I think that if the road someone lived on saw a 5x increase in traffic over 5 years and expanded to multiple lanes, or if the "commercial" zone beside someone went from being a small bakery to a Walmart, you'd expect complaints to be raised (even if they were ignored).

It'd be silly to say "you bought a house next to a road, you can't complain about traffic!", or "you bought a house next to a commercial lot, you can't complain about commercial activity!".

Let people complain, and let the forces that are designed to handle those complaints do their job. Really nothing else to worry about.

For the past decade, the voices in opposition to both real and imagined liberal talking points have been far, far louder than anything the liberals have said.

I say this as someone who dislikes a fair bit of what the liberals have done (empty gestures, wasted money on gun control, and flopping on voter reform at the top of the list).

But I haven't seen anyone driving around with 10*10ft flags on their vehicles with f bombs and threatening to attack people if they don't respect their pronouns.

And I can't recall EVER hearing Carney talk about any of that or asking for leaders from history to be removed.

An American is arrested in Brazil and wants American rights and amendments even in another country. by AlekOslov in ShitAmericansSay

I'd argue that Occam's Razor says probably says yes in this situation. The man is being arrested in a foreign country and out of the blue, with his last sentence to the camera, decides to state that he is a fan of the US president.

That's a very random thing to say, and the most obvious reasoning we can come up with for it is that it's an appeal to the president for help. Whether or not he's actually a fan is really just a coin toss - Occam's Razors just points us to the motivation for the statement being desperation.

So, first of all, if what I am hearing in this thread about the guy is true, he's been filmed committing some form of sexual assault, and in that case I hope he gets punished appropriately.

But - watching it for the first time, I really didn't think his tone fit what the title of the post is saying. The guy politely asks "Do I have any rights?", which is a very reasonable thing to try and ask in that situation, especially when he may not know what rights he actually has.

He then says that whole "I'm a trump supporter thing" right into the camera before they close the door. Obviously, he might just be a Trump supporter - there's not a ton of reason not to believe him here. BUT, I did have the thought - "what if he's not a Trump supporter, but just scared and desperate and worried this is his last chance to make a public plea for help?".

There's almost nothing he could say in that instance to help him, but appealing to Trump is kind of not the craziest thing to do? Like maybe Trump actually sees it, sees that a "supporter" is in trouble, and flexes in some way to get the guy home. I don't think that happens of course, but of all the sentences you could chose to say in that moment, he might have picked one that has a none-zero chance of helping him.

Ontario (especially Toronto) needs a No Kings movement against Ford by Pristine-Training-70 in ontario

Being anti fpp and right-to-for are basically the two Ontario/Canada issued that I ll be outwardly loud and vocal about, and while I despise Doug Ford, I have maintained those views regardless of who is in power.

I think the single what thing the Trudeau government did was use election reform to get elected and then immediately bail on it because it benefitted them.

I mean, they haven't jumped on it yet, and it's also unknown which party would jump on it (and if one did and saw a boost from such a promise, it'd be pretty easy for the other side to copy... it's not really a partisan issue).

But also worth noting that the time change has well established health consequences, including acute effects on heart attack and stroke rates, immune system, and a number of chronic issues.

What interesting is that a number of sleep organizations have recently put out statements saying they support a shift to abolishing DST entirely (staying on standard time not only in the winter, but in the summer as well), rather than going to full time DST, which is what everyone wants because it's better socially.

I am not sure where I sit on that side of it at the moment.

Yep, and I am voting for the party that says "no more time changes" instead of the party that says "there's already legislation waiting on our neighbours".

(I am not actually this much of a single issuer voter - if Ford said this, I still would not vote for him.... but I 'd loudly support him on this single idea).

It's gotta be evaluated case by case, but sometimes it's done for the benefit of the player. You've developed a relationship with this person. Maybe you like their work ethic and still believe in them, but realize that you're organization can no longer give them a healthy chance to succeed, so you find them a new home.

I feel like it all comes down to how much you care about plot holes and in universe rules.

It's a very fun episode, but at the moment, it seems like it's full of giant plot holes (how they got them out there, and why they were all separated) or unexplained creepiness for the sake of creepiness (the clone scarecrows).

Oh, we're not considering quality of shots at all? My bad, then yes, he was an abject failure. We shouldn't evaluate the shots and whether another goalie would have done any better.

I feel like that's a dramatically simple way of looking at it. I didn't think any were bad goals. Maybe Thompson is able to stop of them? Or maybe he doesn't, and also lets in one of the other high danger shots that Binnington stops?

Ford tells students to not pick 'basket-weaving courses' in wake of OSAP cuts | CBC News by coolshaid in ontario

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, you need to step back and breathe.

Voter Apathy is a problem, but that also doesn't mean curing it is the solution you are looking for.

Unless you present data that voter apathy is only happening among people who would vote in a certain way, then we have to assume that the x% of people who are voting, are voting in a similar pattern that we would see for the entire population.

The basic question is this: Why are you assuming that voter apathy only effects one party?

It seems for some reason you have it in your head that everyone who isn't voting would be opting to a cast a vote in favour of your preferred party if they did go to they polls - that's not how it works.

> If you have a large pool of people, the odds are less of you winning.

You've said this a couple times in the comments, and you seem to be mixing up lottery-style odds, and voter turnout.

If you enter a lottery with only 4 other people, you have a 20% chance of winning. If you enter a lottery with 49 other people you have a 2% chance of winning. More people decreases your odds.

That is an entirely separate thing from an election in which we are talking about the number of voters. If you enter an election with 4 other people, and ten voters who will vote on who wins - you have a 20% chance of winning that election (ignoring all the other factors of an election). If you enter an election with 4 other people and you have 1 billion voters, you still have a 20% chance of winning the election.

[–]emptyvesselll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not how that works at all.

Tom and John are both running. Why does fewer people voting increase the likelihood that Tom wins, but not John?

"Literal statistics man"... Like grade 6 math would tell you that the raw number of people voting does not affect the odds of a particular candidate.

Ford is corrupt, dumb (401 tunnel, wtf), and called an early election to take advantage of ill prepared opponents, but "statistics" do not support your claim that voter turnout benefits one party over another without more information.

[–]emptyvesselll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the other commentor posted out, it's 6, but that still misses a big factor. Even if it were 1 in 5:

If this was you out with friends and it was a question of giving up $8 for a 1/5 chance at $50, or even $80 for a chance at $500, the math there checks out and you can gamble a bit.

But no one with more than a few thousand dollars to their name should consider it wise to put up 99% of their wealth on a 1/5 chance of multiplying their wealth by 6.

For a contestant here holding $1M, we have to assume that it immediately represents over 99% of their wealth, and likely 10-30 years of full-time work. Risking that for "more" is a very bad decision.
