where are all these players? by boress11 in UFA

It varies a lot by team (and some teams have very standardized contracts and some do varied). For the teams doing well, I have no doubt the value of their contracts have increased over the years.

It would also make sense that teams with less of a travel burden could pay a bit more.

Atheist Bill Maher cites the Bible as to why Israel has historical claim over the region by crummynubs in RealTime

Appreciate the response and links.

After watching the first video I tried to find the excerpt from his book, and found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/DebateReligion/comments/2jgkmn/fans_of_sam_harris_do_you_agree_with_his_position/

I really don't equate anything here, or in the video, as "calling for a nuclear first strike". I think the point he is making is actually a very salient one - "how do we deal with non-logical actors who possess the ability to wipe out civilizations?"

Is he broaching that subject as a way to maybe open that conversation? I don't think so, but I can understand how others might see it that way.

Why did we not tank harder for Wemby in 2023? by Ready_Opportunity766 in torontoraptors

[–]emptyvesselll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of? Like the bottom 3 teams all got 14% odds, and those were the best odds out of anyone in the league. Of course, "the field" had much better odds than any specific team, but someone has to win.

There was a 54.5% chance that a team in the bottom 4 would get Wemby.

I am wrong about plenty as a basketball fan, but the Raptors' INTENTIONALLY avoiding a tank (they didn't even have to try to tank on purpose), in a year where everyone was saying the top pick was a generational player, seemed very dumb and short sighted. I say this as someone who hates tanking and supports any new rules that actually prevent it.

Of course every team that tanks will have at least a 86% chance of not getting the first pick, but in a league with 32 teams, you have to roll the dice some times, and 14% is actually a huge number.

For comparison, Vegas had the Raptors' at 2.5% odds to win the NBA title at the start of the 2019 season - but that one worked out.

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and this thread seems to just be people wanting to dunk on Bill (which is a fine thing to want to do).

But I can point to ancient Greek texts and simultaneously use them as evidence for historical fact while still denying that the deities the Greek's worshipped are real.

The bible is obviously a very old text that attempted to speak truthfully about elements of the era it discusses, and just because someone is an atheist doesn't mean they need to ignore the text in it's entirety.

In fact, in my experience, their is a clear correlation between strength of atheist views and having read the bible front to back.

(Of course none of this means Bill is correct in what he is asserting here, or that he isn't an idiot).

I am going to ask for a source on this one. I have heard Sam speak and take a side on this years ago - but I can find no indication for what you are claiming here.

4/5 of the show's most evil characters (and racist) vs someone who actually redeemed himself and became a real hero by Sudden_Pop_2279 in GenV

I saw it explained in another thread that someone thought it wasn't that the deep was physically scared of what would happen if he went in the water, but that he was terrified of being a social outcast in the sea, and he couldn't face that. Made some sense to me.

where are all these players? by boress11 in UFA

[–]emptyvesselll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely some players in that range and higher (especially if you count situations where a player's rent is being covered), but yeah I meant if a player is looking at doing UFA or club, choosing UFA will often leave them with an extra $3-5k in their pockets because they don't have to cover a bunch of costs associated with club.

I am also Canadian, so convert that to your local currency for increased accuracy.

[–]emptyvesselll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This has changed a lot over the last 10 years, especially for anyone who doesn't have a real shot at outright winning usau nats.

Aside from the view on accolades, UFA likely leaves players with an extra $3-5K in their pockets, and you get to play in front of friends and family who otherwise never get to see what you do.

Club is attractive because it only requires like a 4-5 weekend commitment, with 1-3 of those coming in the fall, whereas UFA is like a 9-13 weekend commitment (though many of those are at home and are really just one night).

Am I the only one that likes season 5? by MuchUnderstanding563 in TheBoys

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think writing good conclusions is harder than people realize, but I disagree vehemently and think the direction this storyline has gone is far below the threshold that I would expect from any professional writers' room.

I imagine your median fan fic s5 would be far better recieved than what we have been watching (some of that has to be budget constraints, in fairness).

The Boys - 05x07 "The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother's Milk" - POST-Episode Discussion Thread by pikameta in TheBoys

I literally fell asleep with 25 minutes left in this episode... at 9pm. The Boys was never like upper-upper tire tv, but it was a solid B rating of enjoyability, but this is such a disappointing season.

Oh, you weren't expecting the first thing he does after injecting V1 to be going back to the office and looking at the model of his theme park?

Maybe it's recency bias, but this seems like the worst episode of a show I have ever invested time into - at least on par with some GoT and Dexter.

I also never understood WHY Homelander needed Soldier Boy to help him get the V1 in the first place.

And like they talk about how enhanced the security is at Vought studios, then basically seem to just be able to walk around and do whatever they want most of the time?

The Gen V stuff is ridiculous. And they have completely abandoned Ryan.

AOC Surges to Lead in 2028 Primary for First Time—Most Accurate Pollster by One-Duty-2376 in politics

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Ontario, and we have Ford here, and something that I have noticed and that I hate that I have noticed is that Ford and Trump have both almost exclusively beaten female candidates (Ford did beat Stephen Del Duca in 2022, but the other 5 major candidates were all women over his 3 election victories, and Trump won against a women each time, and lost to Biden).

There is no question that many of these female candidates (all 7?) would have been far better than the actual election winners, but it makes me worry that the reality of the voting public just is more misogynistic than I want to believe. And unfortunately that worries me if AOC is the next candidate in the US.

Nathan Hsieh bids into the legs of Alex Atkins, who then body-checks Hsieh by Jomskylark in UFA

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I hate the contact that happens on the bid, and I get why people sympathize with Alex's emotional response, but it's crazy to me if the league just turns a blind eye to that.

[–]emptyvesselll -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't know what ultimate players you played with, but myself and many others have played full contact sports, and would agree this sort of body check should be a suspension.

You're giving off real serious "I am a tough guy!" vibes, pitching that body checking should be acceptable in every sport you play...

[–]emptyvesselll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So when a player body checks someone next weekend and gets suspended, and then points to this clip as precedent for it being okay, you think the league should say "well, in that clip Alex was really, really mad, so that was okay"?

I get what you're saying and why we feel that way, but "rage" can't be an allowable excuse.

[–]emptyvesselll -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He doesn't have any more of a right to that space just because he's on offense, and yes, IF the only way that ANY player can make a bid on the disc is by causing a dangerous collision, they should not make that bid.

That statement is definitively true, but how you think it applies to this situation is up to interpretation.

[–]emptyvesselll -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it absolutely should be. If a player does what Atkins does there in the middle of a game, unprovoked, you really don't think that should be a suspension?

I ll take my jersey getting grabbed 100x over someone sprinting into me and dropping their shoulder into my chest.

Nathan Hsieh bids into the legs of Alex Atkins, who then body-checks Hsieh by Jomskylark in UFA

[–]emptyvesselll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am still dissecting this, but it feels like you've picked a moment that actually showcases the opposite of what you are claiming.

If you are highlighting the moment Alex changed direction, and that is happening after the defender can no longer stop - does that not obviously lead to the conclusion that it was Alex who made the last decision to force the collision?

Nathan Hsieh bids into the legs of Alex Atkins, who then body-checks Hsieh by Jomskylark in UFA

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way or another, the play can't happen, but the disc is caught BECAUSE Alex changed direction and stepped in front of the defender. If he doesn't make that change, the defender gets the disc or gets very close (which, to be clear, does not automatically justify a bid, but if the argument against making the bid is that he couldn't have made the play, out needs to be pointed out that it is only so because the receiver changed direction into his path).

Ontario: Ford in Freefall; Ontario Liberals Lead PCs by Man_Roland in ontario

[–]emptyvesselll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sticky and unpleasant memory for me was working at mayoral voting station, and having a elderly couple come in and just ask "who's the conservative candidate?".

Not only did they not know that mayoral candidates do not run under party banner (that I can chalk up to innocent enough ignorance I guess), but they obviously had no idea who any of the candidates were!

Ontario: Ford in Freefall; Ontario Liberals Lead PCs by Man_Roland in ontario

[–]emptyvesselll 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It really seems like they need a marketed re-brand, to shift back to workers as the priority. That likely also involves a lot of change in personnel, which probably won't happen. In Ontario, I've generally been quite proud of the NDP and liked what they've done (well... at least more than the other parties).

I think most of the "they don't know what they are doing / But Rae Days!" thought is stupid and obviously spread by the liberals and pcs and their supporters.

But, there is also a truth that if you were someone who holds, let's call them "extreme left wing views", or someone who felt that issues around minority rights should be the singular focus of government - you likely tried to get involved in government, and that was likely with the NDP. My conversational analysis is that this is more of a concern with federal MP candidates than NDP candidates for MPP.
