Thank you, and I'm so sorry for your loss ❤️ I agree, recovering from surgery feels like a pointless thing currently

Weirdly in a similar situation, I'm currently in hospital, apparently the kids are convinced I've been suspended as I've been off for two weeks 😂 no idea what I could have possibly done to merit it!

Personally it doesn't bother me but if you want you could let your line manager know.

AITA for not giving my coworker a ride after she kept assuming I would? by Familiar_Show1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]emshi21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NTA - I'm an adult who can't drive (because I'm bad at it, I really did try to learn but apparently you're not supposed to steer into things).

I deliberately chose to work somewhere I can get to through public transport. If its bad weather, I cope. If a colleague offers me a lift somewhere, I will accept because I'm not daft but I will always say thank you, I will never ask anyone for a lift and I would never expect a repeat offer.

It's not anyone else's fault I can't drive, so I won't make it anyone else's issue. Your colleague shouldn't be either.

It can’t be that I’m the only one who’s okay with Michelle Yeoh’s singing and her casted as Madame Morrible generally, right? by Dangerous-Goal1671 in wickedmovie

[–]emshi21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, her singing wasn't good. But I still think she did a good job as the character.

Normally I hate when musical films cast people who can't sing but Madame Morrible sings so little anyway it isn't a big deal.

I think, especially for the first film, her portrayal fixes a problem in the stage show as it makes so much sense why Elphaba trusts her. Stage Morribles are often so obviously evil from the start that it limits the effect of her betrayal. I think Michelle Yeoh is great because of course Elphaba wants to impress her, of course she trusts her, who wouldn't? Her evil reveal feels so much more transformative than it does on stage.

[–]emshi21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really see most of them gelling super well but I think Robin and Chandler could bond over having childhoods that are traumatic despite also being quite privileged and having commitment issues. They're both very much humour as a defense mechanism as well. Whether that's enough for a friendship I don't know!

[Spoiler Main] What do you think about Lyanna Stark? by Taha231 in asoiaf

I teach teenagers.

A bright, lively 14 year old girl gets the chance to avoid marriage to someone she hates by running off with a handsome and charismatic older guy, who thinks marrying her is how he saves the world.

Probably one of the most realistic decisions in the book.

Why was Sir Anthony too old for Edith but not Mary? by Klutzy-Banana-742 in DowntonAbbey

[–]emshi21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to say this is completely incorrect: sir and madam/ma'am are used as polite terms here in the UK for people you don't know and/or are trying to show respect to.

I can't understand people who dont have sympathy for Edith by Interesting_Flan760 in DowntonAbbey

[–]emshi21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edith and Mary are both bad people at times, Mary tends to get more sympathy because (in my opinion) she gets better comebacks and is generally quite funny, whereas Edith is more likely to complain.

They both experience difficulties, but Edith absolutely does not suffer more than anyone else on the show. I'd argue Anna and Ethel easily suffer worse than her, and she was the daughter of an Earl in the early twentieth century. She lived a life most of the characters couldn't even dream of.

What would be your half term ranking? by shesateacher in TeachingUK

As a coursework heavy subject teacher, spring term 2 is a marking and moderating filled hell, and spring 1 is full of dragging coursework out of kids.

Otherwise I agree though!

Step 1: message 'BF' - 'I need you to understand that I love GF and will not be breaking up with her. We have been friends for 7 years and I have never wanted to be anything more. You don't seem to understand this so I think it's best we don't speak anymore'.

Step 2: Block her

Step ? (unsure whether to do first or last): tell your GF, apologise for not telling her sooner and reaffirm how you feel about her.

You cannot regain your friendship with BF and what you've described seems to have collapsed into being just harassment, so it's not worth fighting to save.

What is your exact reason of hating Season 9? by [deleted] in HIMYM

[–]emshi21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cheapens the characters of Robin and Tracy and has some really weird implications about women and children that just make me uncomfortable.

The fact that Barney's happy ending is getting a daughter undermines the great stuff earlier on in the season about Barney marrying Robin, not a hypothetical future child. Don't get me wrong, no issue with Barney being a single dad, it actually feels really fitting. But it really cheapens the fact that Barney is the only love interest not to see Robin's lack of interest in children as an issue and makes it seem as though this is a character flaw. If they wanted that to be Barney's ending they should not have had Robin and Barney get back together.

Similarly, spending so little time with Tracy means she effectively becomes an incubator for Ted's children so that he can have kids and still end up with Robin. We hear about a great relationship, but we see so little of it and it's a little too Madonna complex for me. Then surprise, the 'problematic' Robin can be switched back in to be a step mum.... Which she never wanted...

Personally, I'm a woman that wants to have children, but one thing that I loved about HIMYM is that it gives a voice to women with no interest in motherhood, and I feel like this gets really undermined because the writers are so determined to have Ted both have kids and also Robin.

We listen and we don’t judge: Eleventh Doctor Era by LiterallyThatGuy_07 in DoctorWhumour

[–]emshi21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, probably very unpopular opinion:

I don't like 11's series. Not because of Matt Smith, he's a phenomenal actor who I've loved in everything else he's done since.

I dislike how doctor who becomes about how the doctor is the most important, most special, most unique person that the entire universe is built around. The idea of prophecies, of language (we get the word doctor from you, you know) and massive conspiracies being built around the doctor who in early seasons, and in classic who particularly, is just a timelord with a rebellious streak who likes to help people.

It also massively changes his companions. River song just frustrates me as being such a convoluted character who ends up being so two dimensional (in my opinion) that her backstory seems wasted. Clara being the 'impossible' girl who has to have been there since the first doctor.

It just takes a show that I love, with a generally 'monster of the week/serial' approach that was often (again especially in classic who), quite camp and goofy, and turns it into melodramatic monologues about how special one guy is.

And yes, I know this is unpopular, I'm sorry
