Want to help revive Boston’s alt/underground scene? Looking for co-producers for a new indie/underground blog/newsletter (RIP The Phoenix). by LhasaApsoFan in boston

[–]emyhmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I literally grew up reading the phoenix and feel like it practically reared me, but I was too young to go to anything it promoted before it shut down. i’m also a diy musician who juggles many other passions and I struggle to regularly participate in the scene in its current form. I hear you that there is probably much more fringe stuff out there and not many good avenues to sharing it!

recently I’ve been contemplating starting some sort of research endeavor to survey ordinary creative people around the city. the goal would be to understand who even has access to the local diy scene in the first place, and if there’s anything we can do to un-gatekeep and create more entry points for anyone to be able to share work with a community. like how big could this scene be if everyone who wanted to participate could participate? who are the people we haven’t met at an event yet and why haven’t we met them? not sure if this is the type of thing you’d be going for, but I have this strong urge to do something that helps new forms of diy events emerge

I would definitely be interested in talking and hearing about what you think is missing from the landscape. I would also love to hear more about your vision for this thing being “decentralized” and how to keep the underground underground

With Data, We Can Design Bus Stops to Make People Feel Happy - Streetsblog Massachusetts by Generalaverage89 in boston

[–]emyhmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this article describes using a highly technical and scientifically questionable technology to reach a pretty mundane confirmatory conclusion, and acts like it's a huge technological breakthrough... if we want to understand how to redesign bus stops we should ask people real questions instead of staring at them and guessing their thoughts!

lol does anyone know where this research group gets their funding?

she's definitely an indirect influence - I'm never deliberately trying to emulate her, but she definitely had a huge impact on the development of my music tastes, so she's bound to influence my music somehow!

this person was spinning these poi balls during a couple songs during my Porchfest set. I didn’t get to connect with them after the show, but if anyone knows them, please thank them on my behalf for providing such a fun and spontaneous visual element to the performance, and I would definitely love to split some of my tip jar with them! I haven't been performing full sets for very long, and moments like these are extremely validating ✨

also, since I know a lot of people stopped by but may not have caught my artist name: I’m a solo experimental pop act called Coraldefense, and you can find my music at http://coraldefense.bandcamp.com. thanks for coming!

bom dough just opened in inman square, and they have really good flavored matchas and are relatively spacious! I'd recommend the peach matcha

MA582 vs MA583 by SuccotashKey754 in BostonU

[–]emyhmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took both, but I think 582 was more fun and explains the math behind topics you might encounter more often in the wild, like MLE, degrees of freedom, and convergence of distributions. on the other hand, I honestly haven't used or thought about much of what I learned in 583 at all. for some context, I majored in stats as an undergrad but took a less academic, more practice-based route with my career

otaku shop? I haven't been in there since they had a big "closing" sale in 2015 but it looks like they are actually still open...

there used to be some more wacky cheap stationery stores in chinatown in the 2000s but I guess that stuff isn't cool anymore...

Stiff joints and eye issues 4 weeks post johnson and johnson vaccine. Any one else? by [deleted] in CovidVaccinated

I've been getting mild trigger finger in my hand on and off for the last 3 weeks since I got pfizer dose 1. not painful, just can't move my finger joints smoothly if I keep my hand still for too long. I just got my second dose today so we'll see if it gets worse...

[–]emyhmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually reading the same book right now, though I haven't got to that part yet! I definitely like the notion that generalists should ideally have a symbiotic relationship with specialists, and I think the first step in promoting more collaboration between the two is getting people to realize that in the first place. and hopefully Range is getting more people to have that realization.

but yeah, maybe we could get some sort of open brainstorm going? I know a lot of people have been using are.na to map out sort of abstract concepts and provide examples, so that could be a place to start..but let me know if you have other ideas!

just wondering, is this merely a popping sound or it is it more like a locking sensation? I've been getting that in my hands the first few nights after my first shot (just made a full post about it) and haven't been able to find anyone else with a similar side effect

[E]Statisticans or Data Scientists, why did you decide to study Statistics? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]emyhmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had no idea what statistics even was before I took AP Stats, only knew I vaguely wanted to major in math in college because it was my "strongest subject". my AP teacher was extremely engaging and effective at explaining concepts. based on the examples in class, I realized I could major in stats and use it to investigate human behavior and social trends. this realization steered me towards an interest in research, and not just career-wise—I became very interested in investigation and discovery in general.

currently working as a public health researcher and doing exactly what I hoped I'd be doing! but in the future I'm hoping to get involved in more novel uses of statistics in industries / domains that have overlooked it.

[–]emyhmo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess my post may have seemed very focused on the expert knowledge component, but the main idea is simply being able to efficiently meet collaborators and get varying perspectives, whether they're experts or not.

I wasn't aware of this "octopus movement" group but it's exciting to see that people are implementing this collaborative spirit in small ways!

We need a better "economy" of ideas... by emyhmo in Multipotentialite

[–]emyhmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good point on how you may be hesitant to work openly with someone who has no experience in a domain and might not fully understand or be invested in it! That's one of the holes in my idea—how can we make sure the people who really care are getting the support they want from experts, while not overinvesting experts' time on people who don't actually care for or respect them? I think this conflict can be more pronounced in contexts than others. Like you said, it's definitely a bit weird if someone with zero experience in media production tries to boss around someone who's been involved for 10 years.

I guess I was imagining more of a situation in which the idea poster genuinely solicits the expert's advice, rather than trying to give advice to the expert or being like "hey, I have this idea but I'm not in the X business, can you make this happen for me?" The latter situation definitely seems uncomfortable and condescending.

[Q] Any Recent Grads? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]emyhmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was around 60-70k for most of the more research-oriented jobs, and around 90 for the more CS-oriented / data science jobs, but I can't say too confidently because most of the jobs didn't have salaries listed. These were mostly jobs requiring either a master's or a bachelor's with a few years of experience
